Sharp Rattle - Rear Wheel Area Over Bumps - Click HERE for Original Thread
dm_designer
I've got a sharp rattle chirp sound coming from the rear wheel area.
-04 AWD-
I hear it on both sides ( windows down ).
Distinctive to each side when I hit a bump, so Ive narrowed it down to the wheel/ suspension.
Rotated the tires & looked for anything, but all was solid.
Dealer could not reproduce (whatever).. so Im doing this one.

Anybody else have this?

Almost sounds like the disc brake cover, but upon inspection, they were tight, & not in contact with anything.

Roads are crap in Atlanta, so I'm always going over a sharp bump & that is when it happens...

Any suggestions or similar probs?

Thanks In Advance!

BTW, very satisfied with my MO 04 AWD

This is a longshot, but did you check the spare tire well? It is possible something may have fallen into the well and is rattling around in there. It wouldn't be the first time something like that has happened.

If it makes the noise all the time, drive the car over a bump with the dealership tech sitting in the passenger seat so that they hear the noise. I don't know how many hundreds of times that advice is repeated here on the forum, else you end up with the "could not reproduce" on your service invoice.

We had a persistant rattle in the back of our Mo for over a week. We took everything out of the back hatch in an effort to find it. Finally took it to the dealers.

I'm embarrassed to say: The rattle was two water bottles in the back seat cup holder! :o

I had a rattle over bumps a few years back, actually two of them.

The first one was the emergency brake cable. Somehow, it came unclipped and was loose. It rattled on every bump.

The second time, there was a stone in the U shaped framework near the right rear wheel. It also made clunk sounds all the time. This took forever to find.

Chirp could be metal on metal maybe....

Good luck.

Thanks for the input.... Ill be going through it this week, & will post my findings.

Thanks Again!

I believe my MO is making the same noise as yours but I believe it is coming from the left front suspension area; it used to make the same noise a couple of years ago when I went over bumps, but I had some warranty work done to the left suspension and it also quieted the chirping metal sound, unfortunatley it is making the same sound as a result of of working in Buckhead area where they are constantly working on the road and constructing new buildings, I hit hard bumps every single day.

I had the same problem. Of course the mechanic at the dealership couldn't hear it. But he too a large rubber mallet and with the car on a lift he hit a back tire really hard and immediately found the problem. Was the emergency brake cable.

Was a smart way to reproduce driving over a bump.

check for rocks and misc other junk caught in the rear spring or suspension arms. I had a nice little piece of gravel that worked its way into the area underneath where the rear spring is and it made a horrendous crunching sound when going over bumps.

Team Nissan (Marietta) found it for free :) It was very annoying and they seemed surprised by it too

Update on Noise From the Back:

Ive narrowed it down to the brake/ brake calipers.
They float on the disks, as they should, & I feel that they are coming into contact with the disc shields.
I can eliminate the issue when holding light pressure on the emergency brake when going over bumps.

Or, the calipers themselves are making the noise clanging around on the disk itself.

Next step is to eliminate the noise... more to come.

Thanks for all the input. Greatly appreciated.

MOpar... thanks for focusing in on that. helped me to narrow it down.

I have a "right rear rattle". I had the dealer check it out a few times. They make it go away and then it comes back. I have gotten a few different "rattle problems" answers but, I agree with the break cable answer. My brake calipers (front left), made a "clicking" noise but, the dealer changed the cotter pin(s) and it fixed the noise. But, the rattle in the rear does not sound like a break problem.

Do you have kids? The only reason I ask is that I do and had the same problem in my '03. It started after I had mine in for servicing. It made a high-frequency rattle when I hit small cracks, bumps on the road. I brought it back thinking that it was caused by somthing perhaps in my rim(they had the wheel off in the back). After couple of hours, they came back with a zip-lock baggy full of little parts(round gumballs, toy parts and other things that can roll around dropped by kids). Apparently, there is a small cutout in the rear carpeted area beneath the rear seats(both outer sides) where these little guys can roll into and fall into a cavity where they bouce around. Yes, it was an embarrising moment when he showed me all the colourful little pieces; but I'm glad that the rattle is gone:D

Confirmed that the noise is coming from the emergency brakes.

LIght pressue on the pedal, & its gone.
Ill have the dealer adjust them when I go in for the 30k service.. which is just around the corner....

Now I would say that I am completely happy with the car.....

No, no kids. The only toys that I haul are mine. & I do use the compartments under the rear area alot, but keep them well padded ( towels ) to avoid any rattles.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

ok same problem as everybody else, i took everything out from the rear cargo and still rattles, install extra sticky foam all around rear hatch door and still rattles grrrrrr, adjusted the 2 bumps and did nothing, removed rear tag pointless.... but i notice when i was removing the rear tag that the rear wiper rattles when you close the hatch door, so that's one of the rattles noises that i heard but don't know how to fix it cuse i need the wiper, one down way more to go, i also notice the rear fiberglass bumper will rattle when i close the hatch, so i hold the bumper from the bottom and move it up and down, and walaaaaa the noise i have been hearing all this time sound it just like that, there is a screw on top of the tire on each side of the bumper, it was loose a little, i took a screw driver and tighten it very hard, corners ar very tight but the rest of the bumper still rattles, i'm going to do more exploring to see if i can find more screws in the center of the bumper, but i need to get under the car
so after all this time and wondering i think the rattle noise is coming from the fiber glass rear bumper. any ideas or suggestion how to fix it or if dealer will take care of it??? please advice
