Just got my Murano back!!! - Click HERE for Original Thread

Well, some of you might remember me having to replace my CVT Tranny. I have not been on for awhile as I had been driving my 2006 Jetta TDI that gets 48 MPG. Four months ago I took my Murano out of the garage to drive to my friends house around the block due to snowy conditions. After leaving a stop sign the Murano just quit moving. Then it would not start. After a few weeks I get a call that I need to replace the engine. Seems that the Timing Chain broke and tore the engine up. Now I asked the dealer if I needed to replace the timing chain they said no not really, it should last for a long long time. Belts he said needed changed every 60K miles. Well at 112 thousand miles the chain broke. I guess I am glad that I bought the Jetta last summer and let the Murano sit for 7 months in the garage except for short trips to keep the battery going.

I guess now you could say that I have a Newer 2003 Murano after replacing the CVT and Engine within a year. The new engine is from a 2004 Infiniti I35 as it can be used in both applications. Seems to be working out. Now I am just not sure if I want to keep the thing. Guess that it is almost payed off and not worth much on trade in with the mileage. Guess I should just keep it.

The timing chains (the MO has three) should last the life of the engine. Oh, that's right, yours did last the life of the engine. ;) Seriously, timing chains, unlike belts, almost never fail.

Did they say which of the three chains failed? The MO has three timing chains. The primary chain connects the crankshaft to the two camshafts for the intake valves. Two shorter chains each connect an intake camshaft to an exhaust camshaft.

They did not mention which chain. I did not take it to a dealer. (Sick of Nissan Dealers) after the treatment by them with the CVT replacement. Funny though, just before it went out I had taken it to a dealer due to a sound coming from the cam area. They replaced a chip and three months later the same sound, they told me not to worry that it was fine. LOL
When the engine was tore down they did tell me that it seemed to look like there was damage due to Oil deprivation in the top end. But I religously changed the oil at 3500 miles and it never leaked any oil. It sat in my garage for 6 months or so before it went out. Just small trips during those months. So, I am not really sure what caused the problem. I don't dislike Nissans as I had a 95 Maxima that had 275K miles and a 86 300ZX with 200k. I just hate the Nissan Dealerships. They do not care about customer service.

Hi Randy,
sorry about your ordeal. Hope, now everything will be fine.

As to the dealers - I am with you on this one. Customer service - I do not think they even know how to spell these words.......

Its interesting the I35 engine works fine - well ok its the exactly same engine, but nice to know the CVT has no issues with the 255hp.

Actually the difference in horsepower would be due to intake, exhaust and ECU programming, so it would have the normal Murano power in a Murano application.

Ooh I see. :)

Assuming of course the cams are the same, which for that vehicle they probably are. I could see the cams being a bit different in say the 350Z.
