BATTERY question - Click HERE for Original Thread

How long is the battery supposed to last without use?

I went on a vacation for 3 weeks and left my car covered in the driveway - I came back and the battery was dead. Well, not quite dead all the way, but dead enough for the Mo not to start.
I had to jump it and after about 2 minutes of being connected to another battery, it finally started.

I realized that I should've disconnected the battery! I completely forgot.
I used to do that with my old car, but I was in a hurry and forgot to un-hook it this time.

My car is brand new, less than 3000 miles.

So - how long is a battery supposed to last, being hooked up to the car, without being touched?

Thanks ~
GripperDon
Out here in the desert they last 30 to 36 months if parked outside. and in my Cooled garage add about 6 months.

You situation my indicate not only a bad batter but a reason for it like a bad alternator or regulator or a mild short in the MO's wiring. I would go NOW.

I really don't feel that 3 weeks should discharge a battery that badly. I go away for a month and come home and cranke em up never a problem.

I personall do not disconnect my batteries. If you must and find out that thing are ok i would buy a "Battery Maintainer" from NAPA or the like. THis will keep a very very well controlled monitoring of your battery and charge it only as required.

Not sure how long it's supposed to last, but mine went over two months, uncovered, outdoors at an airport, and started without issue in -30 temps. I have Intelligent Key, which apparently includes a bigger/stronger battery to accomodate the extra drain of the intellikey system, but I imagine all Mo's should be about the same. Certainly at least three weeks without problems.

That is what you get when you vacation without the MO....:D

A discharge in three weeks is not typical. I have had mine parked for three weeks and battery was fine. My guess is that your battery was low on charge to start with. Since your car is new, I recommend asking dealer to check the battery next time you visit them to make sure this discharge has not damaged it.
ekaxel
Anything beyond 3 yrs on an OEM battery is borrowed time, especially with the MO battery, which is NOT maintenance free. Did you (have you ever) checked and filled the battery water?
Since your car is an '07?, it may just be a defective battery, but check the water anyway!
rjardine
I must be well into borrowed time then.
My 2003 is a Dec'02 build date purchased new in May '04.
Just left it for almost 3 weeks while away on vacation and upon our return she started up with no apparent loss of cranking power.

I regularly check the water level but have not had to add very much since new. However I do have a drive to Victoria BC through the Rockies planned for August and I am thinking it might be prudent to change the battery before the trip.

What alternate batteries would Canadian forum members recommend and best place to obtain - Cdn Tire, Napa etc??

I have an 03 MO.... now with almost 40,000 miles and coming up on four years.... battery is fine, I plan on another at least another 2-3 years with it.

Tarzan-

I don't think disconnecting the battery is good for the MO or the battery. Your best bet is to hook up a trickle charger to the battery next time you plan on letting the MO sit for a while.

Wow -

thanks guys!

Yeah I think I will take it to the dealer and have them put a new one in.

I expected it to start right away. I'm in SoCal, and it's been hot out here, I hear, but you're right - it was only 3 weeks, it shouldn't have any problems starting under its own power, should it?

So far, my Mo experience has not been all that great.:(

Plus, my new job starting talkin about offering me a Hybrid, all paid for! Why didn't they tell me this a couple of months ago? :3:

You never said if you checked the water.

Good luck with that Gonzo!

I just replaced my battery last week. It "died" in the Costco parking lot. It had a few slow start warnings prior to it going dead.

I replaced it with a Costco (Kirkland) battery right in the parking lot.

More Amps, better warranty, and most importantly..... sealed.

Anyone wanna buy 3/4 gallon of distilled water?

Good point - did you check the water level in the battery? Yeah, Nissan supplies an el cheapo maintenance battery with the vehicle.

The owners manual suggests you disconnect the battery if the car is going to sit more than 30 days.

Yes, but if you do that you will lose all of the settings in the car's memories. It is just as easy to throw on a trickle charger if you have one.

I once owned a 1971 Datsun 240z. I left if in my garage for about 6 weeks and when I got home the battery was dead. I later found out that the analog clock took about .1 amp to run and that drained my battery. After that I always pulled the fuse for the clock if I was going to leave the car for a long period of time. Could the Murano have some device that drains the battery over time ?

Well it has a digital clock which uses up power as the vehicle sits, and also a blinking red security light. But that shouldn't drain a battery too much.

I thought that was besides the point?

According to what some of you say, this battery shouldn't drain after only 3 weeks, and that I should ask for a new one when I take it in for service?

I'll check it today just to see, but it failed to turn over again yesterday without a jump.

If the electrolyte level is too low, the battery will not be able to hold a charge. If the water is fine, but it still won't hold a charge, then the battery is officially dead (barring charging system problems).
njjoe
Tarzan-

If your battery fails to hold a charge then the dealer should replace it for free since your MO is less than one year old and has less than 36,000 miles.

If you do opt for a new OEM battery make sure you get the correct size. The standard battery is 52 amp-hours and the optional battery is 64 amp-hours. The latter option is for MOs with the Intelligent Key package. I'd shoot for the larger battery regardless of whether or not you have the Intelligent Key. The bigger the better when it comes to batteries.

The battery warranty is attached below.

I would no go for Nissan OEM battery. Period. I had only bad luck with them. Go and get something different - Duralast, DieHard, Optima etc. You will not regret...
Eric L.
Agreed - if the dealer offers you a Delco, Diehard, Interstate, Exide - anything....take it over the Nissan battery!

Make sure your dealer does a charging system test first though, to rule out other components that might be causing your battery to die.
Pat03MO
My '03 MO battery died at 3 1/2 years. It gave a good hint prior to crapping out though. You could hear a very-slight-but-noticable hesitation on startup, just enough to make you say "That's different".
Tyler_Canada
My OEM battery died after 3.5 years too. I would take the biggest battery the dealer will give you for free, and when it starts acting up again, buy a more powerful one from somewhere else.
ekaxel
It would STILL be nice to check the water........
Tyler_Canada
Oh yeah, check the water first, or have someone else do it.

I must be lucky or something, my last Nissan battery lasted 7+ years and I only replaced it as it just started to show signs as the car was starting slower.
GripperDon
was the most important thing plus no 150 F under hood that happens out here it was 116 F today.
Gonzo
Yea, perhaps. I only check the battery every 6 months but as you say it doesn't get so hot here. My auto Excel maintenance spreadsheet makes sure I don't forget. ;)

True-true. Reference my previous dead battery post, I should have mentioned that I did check the water about once/year. Never had any issues with boil-off. Switched to sealed type now.
Tarzan_MO
They replaced it with a completely different battery than the one it came with.

Except that I had to ask the service dude several times to do it, and then when I was getting it back, I had to ask again to see if it had been replaced - the dude said he thinks so, but he had to check. Originally, when I hand it in, I said to him to just go ahead and change it for me, since my car is less than 3 months old and has only 3000 miles on it. I don't think he undestood what I was saying. The dude wasn't too sharp. And for him not to know what his mechanics did without looking at the paperwork after I had paid for the service? Even the lady at the cashiers had no idea.

This is so sad.

THESE are the kinds of people Nissan has working for them? I am NOT impressed.
