Ok as promised, here is my writeup for replacing the plastic "snow plow" fuel tank shield with the metal one. I purchased mine from ABC Nissan, the cost was around $20 shipped. My pictures are for the drivers side shield, but the passenger side is the same.
The first thing you will need is the TSB from Nissan detailing how the procedure is done. Ok, maybe you won't need it with these pictures, but the TSB alone is really all you need to get started since it has pretty good pictures to begin with.

Next we'll assemble the tools we'll need, which are a 10mm socket, a long wide flathead screwdriver, and a small shop light. The mallet? Well, *every* job is better when you have a mallet. I'll tell you what I used it for below.

Ok, so lets see what we are up against here. First up, the snow plow plastic shield. Uuuuugly!!!

We will need to remove one 10mm bolt, and two plastic rivets. The bolt is here:

And here is how one of the rivets look like:

To remove the rivet, you need to push your screwdriver in between the two pieces of the rivet. This picture shows you how:

You can use the mallet to help wedge the screwdriver between the two pieces of the rivet. Don't use too much force, or you can break the rivet. How do I know? Viola!

Now lets remove the bolt holding the plastic shield on:

Here is how the old and new pieces compare. Notice how the holes on the outer sides for both pieces DO NOT line up. So, what's the difference? Read on.

Whereas the plastic shield was held on by one bolt and two rivets, the metal shield is held on by two bolts and one rivet. The second bolt is located towards the side of the vehicle next to a piece of rubber in front of the rear wheel. Let's unbolt that.

Now we can fit the shield into place, carefully putting the outer part of the shield BETWEEN the rubber mudguard and the body, like this:

Now loosely screw in both bolts, but leave enough wiggle room to get the plastic rivet back in too. To pop the rivet in, notice how pushing on the rivet will "expand" the plastic on the other end - so to put it in you need to make sure the end you put in is "narrow" then once it is in, push the middle to "expand" it and it snaps in.

Ok, one side down, the other side is exactly the same. This is how it looks when its all done. Way better than the snow plow, don't you think? :p

I hope you find this writeup useful. |

Outstanding writeup and pics!!! Though we have a 2007 MO and don't need that shield, I'm sure others will be grateful.:)

| So does anyone know whether these aluminum shields were ever used widely for the actual recall? Every other MO I've seen has the plastic one. |

| Great write-up. Has this been sticky'd yet? |

:29: Nice job!
I like any task that includes a rubber mallet in the list of required tools. :p

The mallet also comes in handy to accidentally bonk myself on the head (or maybe the shin) with when I go about breaking things on the car, as is usually the case when I take to vehicle repair. :p |

Yes, and part number is in the other fuel shield thread. |

They came today, and are installed.
The hardest part was the first plastic rivet - it broke to pieces and had to be pulled out with vice grips.
The passenger side one came out really easy.
Lucky for me, the folks at abcnissan.com included a 2-pack of new rivets p/n 17573-CC20A-KT with the shields.
Much improved, though I'll admit the plastic parts were sturdier than they looked.
Worth the full $19.81 though. |

Anyone know if ABCNissan ships to Canada and do they always include the neccessary rivets?
I have not had the snowplow installed so have no fasteners to transfer from one to the other, assuming I could remove them in one piece! |
|

| Eric L. |
| I am pretty sure the kit automatically comes with the two rivets, since I did not request them for mine and it came with them anyways. |

| I took those 2 side guards off too and left them off. I think it looks so much better without the 2 side plastic pieces off.. Install was very easy. It took me a total of 30 mins including my time vacuuming the floor before I got under the car in my garage :) |

Although with the pictures above, you don't really need it. |

Did my metal fuel tank shield swap yesterday after I did an oil change.... With Eric's pictures it was a piece of cake!
I also took the time and sprayed the shields with rubberized undercoating so they are not obtrusive at all. Ill get some pics up soon.....the truck profile is so much cleaner looking w/o that silly plastic nonsense. |

Let me ask, I have no shield never got the plastic one installed. But I ordered the metal one.
It should have all the parts to install, correct? |

Yes but you will have to follow the TSB and relocate one of the fuel lines. |
|
|
| rjardine |
Since their website indicates they ship anywhere, I plan to have ABCNissan ship the shields up to me and then request the dealer to install as per the TSB since they can only obtain the 'snowplow' version up here.
But thinking of our winter climate (102F here this afternoon) maybe there is some logic there. :2: :2: :2:
However before I do that I will be driving the MO through the Rockies to the West Coast, since daughter getting married there mid-August. |

I read through NTB06-023 and can find no reference to having to relocate fuel line(s. |

There is a section right in the beginning about having to cut a clip to relocated some rubber lines - I just assumed they were fuel lines.
EDIT: Correction - its on page 5 and they are three metal lines. |

| I put off the recall until a more visually appealing solution was found. Ordered the ABC part, made an appointment at the local dealer to rotate/balance and flush coolant and asked them to do the recall, but to install the metal parts (made the argument that they were genuine nissan parts from a nissan dealership) instead of the plastic parts. They agreed to do so at no charge if it took no more time/effort, which it did not. Went home with plastic parts as a "door prize". If anybody really wants them, let me know! |

I just ordered the metal shields from ABCNissanWholesale. They are still available for $15.23 plus $5 for shipping.
I plan on having the dealer install them (I still have an open recall on my MO) next week while he is replacing the CD-eating Clarion head unit on my MO.

It refuses to return my CD. When I press the EJECT button all I hear is click-click click-click. The Service Manager claims they will not even attempt to retrieve the CD, but will replace the entire unit. The failed unit is sent back to Clarion in California.

Just wanted to drop a thanks to the author of this thread (Eric L). The pictures and instructions made this very easy! I recently went to the dealer and they quoted me $146  for the plastic "snow plow", and actually all I really needed was the plastic rivets!
This looks much much better! |

You are most welcome. The whole purpose of the DIY threads are to encourage owners to work on their own vehicles (its not that hard). |

| This may sound dumb, but when ordering off abc is the part number and price for the complete set or just one side? $20.00 shipped just seems to cheap:) |

It is for both sides, and yes, it is quite cheap. Remember this was a manufacturer recall part, so thats why it might be so inexpensive (essentially only dealers would buy it, save people like us). |

Once you see them you will also understand the cheap price.
They are not exactly stainless steel.
More like a Stauffers pie pan.
But I suppose they will do the job.
At least some of the time.
They are a snap to put on.
