Hello folks,
first poster here and even though I read a lot I'm still confused so be nice and allow me to reiterate some questions even if they are obvious ones... ;)
One of the big advantages of living in a metropolis like NYC is that you don't need a car at all - until that very point when you start planning to have your first child and it is exactly the case here. :)
If everything goes as planned then I'm going to buy a 2005-2006 Murano pretty soon. I already dropped ML350, X3 and Touareg from my list, I don't really want spend over $20k as this will be our first car and they actually offer less features for an urban couple so I think I'll stick with the Murano. The point is I just want to see my wife driving for at least a good year or so before we'll get any baby on the way (she never drove a car; I had DL but never owned a car.)
However besides being a beginner driver I also don't want her to get lost in some nasty neighborhood (e.g. deepest heel of BedSty) without knowing which way to get home so a well-working navigation system is a must-have for us.
And here comes the question: does it worth the extra money to get a 06 Murano w/ nav or a 05 will do just as fine?
If I understood correctly the differences between 05 and 06 models are really negligible except the navigation - if I can trust articles like these:

http://reviews.cnet.com/suv/2006-ni...7-31736407.html
1. Is there any difference between 05 and 06 nav systems?
2. If there's then is it true that the 06 is much quicker/better/etc?
2. If so then is it possible to retrofit a 05 nav system like a sw upgrade (I'm an IT Eng) or some other way?
TIA:cool: |

Welcome to the forum. First off, most people here are nice so don't worry about that...
Now as far as NAV systems go, if your primary concern is that it will find the fastest way out of the ghetto, than either the 05 or 06 factory system will do the job just fine. There are software upgrades avaialable but as far as I know they just update the maps.
Personally, I have an aftermarket Magellan that works (IMO) better than a factory system. (For those of you keeping score at home, I just "upgraded" to the Magellan 3000T, net cost $159.)
Either one works great.
As far as upgrading a Non Nav MO to a "factory" NAV Mo, as they say in your town Fugadaboutit!
Good luck with the kid thing...! |

I too opted to leave off the Mo's OEM Nav system. I went with a Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS. I can just pick it up off of the dash and use it in all of our 3 vehicles plus it cost a lot less. The Nuvi does not have the 'problem' of a touchy joystick that the OEM supposedly(never tried one) has. You just touch the 4" screen to make choices.
Good luck and welcome to the forums:) .

Thanks for the answers and whishes, I appreciate it. :)
I already weighed the 3rd party GPS options - I also have a Windows Mobile 6 Pro 3G/HSDPA PDA phone so TomTom6 would be fine for me - but the point would be that it should be fixed rather than carry it (she will forget it, lose it, a toddler will require enought stuff to carry already etc).
For 3rd party units I just checked Pio's giant-screen devices - are these compatible with Murano's dash slot sizes (i.e. replacing the Bose/standard sound)?
So if I understood correctly there's no significant difference between 05 and 06 nav systems, right?
That's good - I read somewhere an article some time ago where they were complaining about the 04 or 05 system which did not recalculate silently the route if you took another street but rather kept nagging you to turn around...
However I did not get one thing: is it confirmed that one cannot upgrade the software in a 05 van system to bring it to 06 system? Or it wouldn't make sense (e.g. 06 has faster hw like CPU or more memory/solild state storage etc.) |

| In an AM system in NYC, an external antenna is a must... |

Replacing the head unit which is Clarion btw, is not easy. The "bose" speakers and amps are easy to replace. Search around in audio forum.
For 05 vs 06 nav this might help: http://www.nissanmurano.org/forums/...=&threadid=7187
