Just wondering if any of you living in the mid-evil states have found a way to get around the law requiring you to drill holes in your bumper and ruin the cars appealing exterior. What a stupid law!
Not for me but for my son. He takes my Altima to Virginia this weekend and it will be his car. He does not want to drill holes and ruin the look up front.
I suggested maybe mounting a plate to the passenger side sun visor. I don't know if that is a legal way to display a plate or not.
Anyone find a way to preserve your cars looks in those states like NY, NJ, Virginia and so on?
Any creative ideas? Have you folks tried anything to keep it legal but not mess up your MO or other cars?
Thanks

I can live with the law that requires a front plate/tag.
The really stupid law is the one that limits my speed on the most boring drive on the planet...Atlanta to anywhere. |

Do you feel lucky? You can simply carry it around inside the car and if you are stopped you can claim it fell off earlier in the day.

You need not tell me about the Atlanta boring drive, I know it oh so well. The only thing that makes it tolerable is the Indy-500 raceway that we call the interstate. If you do less than 75, you get your doors blown off by the traffic passing you. LOL
I'm still waiting to see some reply from someone that did not want to trash the MO bumper and mount the plate and drill holes.

It's no big deal. It only hurts for a minute or so, then you will get used to it.
It's better to teach your son to abide by the laws than to find ways to skirt them.

Don't want to break the law, just looking for a legal way to mount this someplace without drilling holes.
Saw a fellow on a PT Cruiser sight that mounted it way off to the right and down below the from bumper. Like the cars in the 1930's and 40's. It looked pretty good and a whole lot better that destroying the the clean lines.

I have just kept the plate still mounted on the plastic plate holder thing in the back storage pocket.
If I get pulled over I tell them how it was knocked off and I found it in front of my car in a parking spot. I haven't had a chance to put it back on yet.
This has avoided the "paper trail" fix it ticket so far. It have not had to use this story on the MO yet but it has worked three times on Ford Excursion.
By the was it is a true story for the Excursion, The plate holder is held on by plastic pop rivets. Someone bumped it while parallel parking and it dropped to the ground. I found it when I returned to the truck. |

That's a d@mn good idea, I wish I had thought of it. :( Oh wait, I did think of it earlier in this thread. :D Actually that is the route I would take if I was in bob1's situation. Good thinking.

The thought of taking a drill bit to the car's bumper is daunting. However; once you do the job(carefully and done well) no one will know any better than yourself.
It is a shame to "accent" the front bumper-line with a plate; it's so nice without one.
I have used this "Industrial Velcro" stuff for mounting my stereo amp and other equipment throughout the MO and I know that this stuff will hold the bumper without any problems. It was sold up here in Canada at the Homer Depot:D. I would imagine they would sell it in the US also. It is called "Velcro Extreme" made for rough surfaces. I have posted a photo of it. If you have a spot on the back of the licence plate holder that is flat enough; I think you might have a shot at using this. Good luck. |

Thanks for the tip Biker-John.
Wonder if that Velcro glue will ever come off? I guess with a product like goo-gone it may.
Of course I'm thinking in terms of leaving a state or Provence and moving where front plates are not needed.

| You can peel it off; very slowly though. The glue is thick and strong but you can peel it. I think that it should be ok for the bumper as long as you pull parallel to the bumper as opposed to perpendicular to it. |

I avoided putting the front plate on the MO for a while until I was instructed to do so by CHP. It was painful when Idrilled the holes but guess what....I got used to it so fast it is the last thing on my mind now!
But if it really pains you, check into a bracket such as THIS . I am sure you can find a way to mount this below the bumper and then put the plate on it. |

Yeah, this may be the ticket. My son was thinking some kind of angle iron or bracket from down below the bumper and then doing a 90 degree up for mounting. I'll show him this idea.
Thanks

My Mo came with the license plate holder. I just put one of those smoked license plate protectors over mine to make it look cleaner, considering it has a plate on it.

PT Cruiser bumpers are sort of designed to have a retro look and thus are easier to mount license plates lower. As a PT owner, I can tell you that it is not as easy as it looks to put the plate lower. The entire front bumper is foam and plastic. There is no way to really bolt it on. That is why most PTC owners opt for the big ugly plate holder in the middle of the bumper.
Here in the state of Washington, it is also illegal not to have a plate on the front of the car. Some people get past that by carrying it on their dashboard. However, I don't like the tacky looks of a license plate on the dash.
If you car is registered in a state that does not require a front license plate and you travel temporarily to a state that DOES require a front plate, you are not bound by their plate laws. If the vehicle is going to live in that state, though, it is just easier to bite the bullet and put the plate on and be done with it. IMHO |

| I'm from Virginia, though in MI now. You will get pulled over for not mounting the front plate, but often you'll just get a fix-it ticket or even a warning. If this is for a Murano--can't remember--at least the front end isn't ruined by a plate the way my father's RX-8 is. |

My son is hell bent on not drilling holes in his car.
Last I heard he's still driving around with the plate in his front seat.
He's devising some frame to Hook under the bumper to the frame or something but has not executed it yet. I think he's waiting to get pulled over.

Drilling holes in your car only hurts if your hand is behind the area where he's going to be drilling:D |

I suppose he could always maintain an address at your house, and keep the car registered in your state.
Otherwise, if he can reliably attach the plate to the car without drilling, I doubt he'll get pulled over. |

Looked into it already. Too much how-da ya do with required emissions inspections every year would mean a 1200 mile round trip to get a new sticker for the plate.

I'm sure the cop would buy that it fell off a bumper with no holes in it. :D |

I was wondering about that myself.
I think my father has been pulled twice for this over the years. The cops know exactly why the plate isn't there. He'd say, "It fell off." They'd say, "Right. Just be sure to put it on as soon as you get home. And drill some holes this time, it'll stay on better that way."
That said, I once spent three months driving from Seattle to Virginia on a ten day temp tag, didn't get pulled. So I've probably used up all my personal luck in the tag area. |
