Painting Rear Bumper - Click HERE for Original Thread
drsteven
I have a few long nasty scratches on my rear bumper that go beyond simple touch up paint fixing.

Question: Has anyone repainted the rear bumper (or any part of the car) with the 3-coat Paint ?

How much is the paint and what is the process to paint it ?

What tools/equipment would I need to do this ?

Is it worth DYI route ?

I took the car to few shops and they want $500 to repaint the bumper which seems really steep.

$500.00 seems very reasonable to repaint your entire rear bumper. After you pay for all the different components of the paint and primers and papers, sanding and masking, you could easily spend that much. I think if you tried to use lesser expensive components to save the money, you will not be happy with the results.

And, if on the off chance, you would be happy with the results other Mo owners might not be.

just my 2 cents

I had the rear bumper repainted late last year after a minor rear-end collision. The cost (to the other guy's insurance) was $485.00. There is a downside, the bumper got the paint job the MO deserved in the first place. ;)

I would think that a price of $500 is right in line with the cost of a professional paint job for the rear bumper.
I have a rear bumper that got damaged when I backed up into a landscaping truck's rear hitch that I've been meaning to fix.
MO Dale; did they replace your rear bumper cover or repair it? Has anyone had experience with repairs done to their bumper cover? Thanks in advance for any info regarding that. John.

Back in mid eighties I used to pay $199 to have a complete car masked, preped, and painted, including clear coat.....They did a good job too!

On Wed my Mo goes under the knife.... I'm getting an accident dent fixed. It's the panel around the gas cap. It's going to cost about $1000.00 and they said they will repaint my door and around it so that everything blends. I don't understand that, but that is what they said. Another place I took it to said the same thing.

I have to admit, I'm really nervous that it wont match and you will be able to tell after that it looks different. I really hope not. Also, over time, like 5 to 10 years, does the paint fade differently ?? Oy, this is a little scary, but it needs to be fixed.

Stupied lady who hit me !!

I wouldn't expect to receive any kind of long term quality, or even a good job when the price is so extremely under the market. Even back in the 80's to do that kind of work on a complete car the materials cost should have at least been $200.00 for any kind of recognizably quality products. Not to mention the labor.

I know there are people out there who don't have as high of expectations as others, that's what makes us unique. For me there is NO WAY I would let Earl Shiebs paint any car of mine for $99.95. But if you are OK with it that is your choice. Just don't be surprised to take a hit on the value of the car when it is time to sell or trade.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I'll leave it to the Pros

With any "silver" type color you should look at it in daylight outdoors and cloudy outdoors. You should also look at it inside under artificial lighting. If they deliver it to you outside and it looks OK then ask them to pull it inside for you just to make sure the paint is blended well. Look at it from all angles. Silver is tough to blend but not impossible.

Don't be skeered, after all it is just a car that can be replaced at any time for any reason.

The damage was pretty minor. Just a couple of small gouges and lots of scratches. The shop did an excellent job and the paint on the bumper looks so much better than the rest of the MO, it really makes me want to have the thing repainted. Here's the pics of the damage I put up on Flickr . I didn't realize it's actually been nearly a year since it happened.

I had my hood repaired after getting whacked by a muffler on the freeway. It is perfect, and mine is sheer silver.
