Rotor Replacement - Click HERE for Original Thread
JKash76
I am in the process of changing my brake pads and taking of the front and rear rotors to get resurfaced. I was able to take the front rotors off fine, however, does anyone know how to take the rear rotors off. Do I need to take out the cotter pin and nut or should they just slip off. If I do have to take the cotter pin and nut off, do I need to repack the berrings?

Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum.

If you are doing that kind of work you might want to consider investing $20 for the service manual. I have attached excerpts from the SM to help you out.

The procedure for removing the hub differs depending on your drivetrain - FWD vs. AWD. You did not mention which one you have.

If your MO is an older model or has racked up a lot of miles it is a good idea to repack the bearings with new grease.

Now having said all that, some people believe that resurfacing rotors is only required if the surface has been gouged by a worn pad. I am sure other members will weigh in on this topic.

Good luck.

Been on my other web for my new toy the G-35 Coupe. That car is notorious for fast wearing brakes and rotors. I have been watching the debate over there.
The gist is the old rotor had bits of embedded old pad material or it is scored from the previous pads. The theory is there will be less surface contact with the new pads if not resurfaced.

The other side of the ticket has no resurface unless they are warped and if you are concerned lightly sand with a fine grit paper.

Bottom line, 2 schools of thought where one has you cutting the rotors and anti-cut people say a thinner rotor is more subject to warp.

I think we need an engineer. Hey Grip, you out there on this one?

And welcome to JKash76.
