Hi guys and gals, hope you're all still loving your Murano, even though everyone else is copying it! Every time I see a Ford Edge I think "Rip off!!!"
Anyway, a number of you have PM'd me for sat install instructions. I hope to take care of this on the weekend.
Why not sooner? Well, my mom was terminally ill with cancer, which sucked up a lot of time and on August 10th, she passed away at the age of 87. So between running back and forth across town when she was still with us (Toronto traffic is terrible!), the funeral, and now dealing with the estate and the enormous amount of things she collected over the years, me and my three siblings are still stupid busy!
Anyway, just a quick note to say I still love ya, and I will get the Sat info posted, sent or up somewhere, somehow, for all of you to get.
Jim
P.S. I'm considering heads and cam for my SRT8 Magnum. Why settle for 425 HP when you can get 500? Muhahaha!!! :D |

Thanks guys!
Yeah, it's never easy, but she led a very healthy active life for 86 of her 87 years. I hope I do that well.
Wow, in November it will be two years since I had the Murano.... Yet I keep coming back here. I wonder if I'll get another when my car hits four years old?
I plan to keep the Magnum a very long time, but for a company car, I can't have anything older than 4 years old, so it would be a good time to get another MO for business and keep the Magnum as a toy! :) Expectation is that after the motor work, the Magnum as heavy as it is, will be 12.7 sec 1/4 mile car. It's currently a 13.17 sec car. Yeah, drag racing's fun. But I'm a good lad on the street. No funny stuff. |

Good to hear from you, jaak.
Condolences on your mom. I lost my stepfather on the 7th. To cancer, as well.
I still aim to make good on the hosting of your instructions, soon as I can get the negotiations settled with the service. |

Sorry about your Mom. I know how crazy it gets. I lost my Mom last spring to Alzheimers. She, also, was 87. Fortunately she was in no pain. She just didn't know anything or anybody.
Anyway, condolences on your loss. |

Sorry about your loss Jaak.
We miss you around here, glad you stopped by and it would be cool for you to get another MO.
Now if we could only get Homer back on here, it would be like old times.

Hey bob1, read any good jokes lately?
(That's a hint, son! Ah say, a hint!) |

Why is it you sound like Fog-Horn Leg-Horn?
Good jokes? A hint?
Sorry Una, going over my head. Is that a way to lure Homer back here?:8:

I kind of have a feeling homer is back - he posted about his trip the other day.
Given the previous topic on this thread, I'm not so sure it is appropriate to post jokes here, but I'll leave it up to jaak (who I'm going to guess won't mind since he is pretty easy going to begin with). |

If he is, I missed it as I am working 7 days a week since June.
I barley have time to cruise in for an occasional post. I must admit I spend a few minutes on the Infiniti site learning about my other car as it's only a few weeks old.
This is however my home and this site is the most civilized on the entire world wide web.
So that was it about the "heard any good jokes." Homer is back and I did not know it.
Hey Homer, a belated welcome back.......where-ever you are.

We had also sad news - our niece from Down Under passed away. She was 27. Cancer. |

Una, saw the post from Homer but is he really back?
Kris, sorry about your loss. Bummer, life just beginning for that young lady. :(

Good to see you around, sorry bout your loss.
My Dad entered hospice last weekend, my Mom died from cancer 10 years back... so I'm with ya man.
Yeah, sorry to hear that Kris. Although it's a tough for a lot of folks to hear about death at an early age, I feel that it's sort of like early retirement, but in an exceedingly better existance.
Love my Mo to death, but she's gone in Feb. :( |

Sorry to hear about your stepfather. It's never easy, but it make you appreciate who's still here, that much more. My father in law has Parkinsons, so that's a challenge. But I'm happy he's still here.
Glad to hear about the instructions, 'cause I think I've had some requests, but I'm not sure! I'm just catching up on some of the email from the summer that I never got to, and one of them brought me back home. (Here!)

Well, funny thing is, I was looking at them today. But if I get one, it would be in addition to the Magnum SRT8. That thing's just so wicked, I never want to sell it! Diablosport finally came out with a tuner for it. I put on their full tune to try it out, not realising it turned off the traction control, or at least, greatly reduced it.
Went to get around someone who decided to stop and I floored it. Well the ESP would normally regulate the engine power if it detected the wheels slipping, but with the Diablo in it, I peeled around them and I look in the rear view mirror and there's just a ton of tire smoke out the back...
After I finished laughing my head off, I found out how to enable the ESP again, while maintaining the performance tune. Pretty cool stuff.
I wonder how it will be with my new heads and cam? Yeah, seriously, like I need another 50 or so HP. I admit it, I grew up watching other people with muscle cars and always wanted one.

Thanks Sunspot. Yes, the pain is tough to watch. But I'm sure watching your mom lose who she was, wasn't easy either. The world changes forever when you lose a parent. I think it makes me face my mortality more now that they're both gone.

Thanks Bob1. Yeah, but could we handle it? LOL! I still compare the Magnum to the Murano when talking to people about it. I should go drive one now. Must be interesting going back to the CVT!!!

Hey Grip, I hope you're doing well... You're so right. And it seems we never really get over it, it just becomes a part of who we are.

This guy walks in to bar... Oh never mind!
I can laugh and cry at the same time, they're both good. Of course now I'm going through the stage where I'll see something or whatever and I'll think "Gotta call mom, oh, wait, never mind..." But even though it's sad, it makes me happy that I think of her. I want to smile when I think of her, so even if I feel sad, I still smile.

Hey mgthe3, great to see you on!!!!! Thanks alot, I know you know...
Wow, Mo gone in Feb... All good things do pass. So what's up next on the agenda?
Oh, here's the little kid in me having fun...
Heads! CNC ported but hand finished around the valve seats.... I hope to get them within the next month.
There's a guy who's got his 300C down around 11.2 seconds in the 1/4, normally aspirated. Stroker motor....

Got an 07 Jaak, couldn't give up that Mo feel. :)
Somebody needs to get in there an do some polishing. :D
Last time I did a port 'n polish was on a set of 65 'Stang heads. Lot of sweat for sure. The difference was amazing though. That lil 289 could smoke a set of 60 series so easily...
Those are some pretty cavernous ports though, monster flow!
LOL on the smokey pass, I used to do that with a 454 caprice I had, oops! Nothing like a big block eh? |
|
|
| jaak |
Thanks Don, I can't wait to stop staring at them!!!
mgthe3, it's funny, my first reaction was to polish them, but other than some hand blending around the valve seats, it seems that polishing them doesn't make the difference we all used to think it did. Shape, yes, but I've been reading about the effect of the boundary layer on the flow... Polished can actually decrease power under certain circumstances. Weird..
Hopefully this Sunday, Sunday, Sunday.... They go on! |
|
|
| mgthe3 |
I can see that... laminar flow stuff. I could have killed for a die grinder or foredom I have now.... it was hell doing it with a drill and by hand.
Hey! Maybe you can get one of those vortex thingies that straightens out the air flow!
:2: |

Funny thing is, as I learned about porting, I really wanted to do my own, and did on two strokes.
As I learned more about porting, I really wanted to find an expert and pay him!
Funny how that works! |
|
|
| GripperDon |
The micro rough surfaces reduce the boundary layer friction. A smooth surface has what is called "Vena Contracta" which in effect makes the cross section be effectively reduced some times as much as 15% WOW
When we design the throat on a solid propellant rocket motor we always make the minimal point where the sonic shock first occurs not polished. This also improves the heat transfer to the walls.
Someday post a set of before and after specs or a sound recording!!!! |
|
|
| jaak |
Hey Don, thanks for that information. I'd say I could learn an awful lot from you, as your brain certainly has some great knowledge!!!!
Is there any pictures you'd like of the after, that I haven't taken above? I can certainly try....
The before pictures I can take, when the original heads come off. I actually bought a set from another guy as the core exchange heads, so they went back without out pictures.
The sound, hmmm.. That's interesting, I didn't think about that, but it sure would be interesting. I even noticed a difference in sound when using my Diablosport tuner, and at first thought it was my imagination, but I guess the change in ignition timing could impact that.
I have to admit, it's actually more fun to talk about this, in a forum where people are not defending their investments in competing solutions! You guys could care less who's product I have, it's all about what works.
Don, if you have more to add, I'm all ears. I'd love it if you made me even a little bit smarter, but what you've posted gives me something to google!

I am out of touch with Multiple discharge ignition systems. But when i put one on a Rotary engine Mazda RX7 I had I could tell the improvement. Maybe just because of the engine design and you fast one made have an equivalent already.
I bet you might like to see the existing units are they are taken apart also! I remember when I had a Jag xk120 (this is way back and it was new) anyway the gaskets were actually too small on the headers and were cutting into the flow If I had not ever removed them I would never had known, but with those old SU carbs it probably didn't matter.
Good luck on finishing up you new mods. |
|
|
| jaak |
Funny how they missed the obvious on those gaskets!
It's been a while since I've had an engine apart, so seeing the gaskets on this, certainly was interesting.
I'd never seen a multilayer metal head gasket before. I'll share my pictures once it's done... :) |

It was fun Grip!
Preceded with a few weeks of me over analysing things and almost memorising the service manual sections that applied, so when it came to do it, I was pretty well prepared.
Of course, doing it with good friends that have the same interest, makes it that much more fun.
Not everything was smiles however.. At one point, my brother in law (in the middle) dropped a push rod down an oil passage in the head. As I walked around slowly, trying to absorb the fact that he did, and that it disappeared inside (Meaning pulling off the steering rack and oil pan to go looking for it) he spotted it with a flashlight still in the hole and we used a magnet to pull it back out.
But other than that, it was a good day's work and certainly a fun adventure! |

What are the cam specs, sounds about a 240-260 duration.
Ahhh gotta love the lope of a long duration cam.
I found a clip of a 66 GT40 the other day that sounds like it has a 280 duration cam just like my 76 Camaro had in it.
280 duration
Wait for the end as it starts to warm.
Love the sound of your motor Jaak! Nice Dyno. |

The exhaust is 274, or @ .050 it's 224.
Wish I could listen to that clip, but I'll have to save it for tomorrow, as everyones gone to bed, and I'm heading there now! :D |
