Break In Period - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have to make an Interstate trip which is about 200 miles one way.

The manual states that during the Break In period, you should not take long sustained trips (or words to that effect).

I now have about 130 miles on an 07 Murano.

Is that a safe one way distance or is that considered... "too far"?

you really don't need a "break in period" i don't think anyways, new new cars dont really need it...so yeah go for it....but dont just listen to me wait for others to chime in and see what they say too

I learned on this forum that for the first few thousand miles you do want to vary the engine speed to let the piston rings seat properly, hence the statment in the manual to avoid long sustained trips where engine speed does not vary much.

You can however go on your trip but once, maybe every 15 or 20 minutes or so, change the engine speed by slowing down a bit and then gasing it up, or simply shift to a lower gear by moving the shifter down to S (I think it is S, or DS, one of the two).

OK. Thanks folks. I have an SE with the auto/manual shift option so it shouldn't be any problem to drop down a gear or two and back up again every 40 miles or so.

How you treat your car during the break-in period will effect how it performs later on. If it is a two-year lease or a rental, then who cares. However, if you plan on keeping it for a while, I would abide by the recommendations. Keep the revs below 4,000 RPMs; No full throttle runs; Vary your speed during the trip.

Enjoy the ride. :D

Thanks for the tips, joe. I'll keep them in mind.

During breakins in my cars I was paranoid about not doing it correctly... on the highway I would constantly vary my speeed 45 MPH - 70MPH up and down up and down.

I had a long communte and some backroads at home I would hit a night... I got through the 1000 miles in less than a week. :4:

No, it was actually intersting. I was always over on the far right lane... cars would catch up with me and even though my speed was all over the place they never knew whether to pass me or not. It was as if they wanted to pass me but were not sure. Some cars would also drive in this redicoulous pattern for miles before either passing me or getting off the highway. Or if they did pass me doiong 50-60... I would catch back up with them when I hit 65-70MPH.... "Hey there is that freck in the Murano..... **again**.
