:29: Nice job!
Now how about something a little more difficult? How about installing NAV in a non-NAV MO with an orange screen?

|
|
| phoenix54 |
| LOL! Now THAT would REALLY be a challenge njjoe!! :8: |

Hello,
I am new to the forum. I have a 2007 Murano with a color screen.
Now that Phonex54 has installed navigation in his murano, how
difficult would it be to do in a 07' model.
Thanks |
|
|
| crashdump |
its difficult no matter what year mo it is. only difference is you need one less part. the color screen.
phoenix got very lucky as he found most of the stuff on ebay for 1 grand. the peices he bought if you paid dealer prices would be over 4 grand i think more or less...
he came out very good. |
|
|
| phoenix54 |
Well, an '07 MIGHT need two less parts: the color display AND the display controller. I'm not sure if the display controller is integrated with the new color displays, or separate as it was prior to 06.
Crashdump is quite right though, I was very lucky to get all of the pieces I needed, sans the wiring harness, for $1048, (including shipping! :) ) in an eBay auction. The components are very expensive from the dealer. I'm not sure about the navigation control unit and the display controller, but the color display ALONE is something like $2600!!! The amber, monochrome, integrated display goes for $1415!!!

P.S. I promise I will post all of the gory details, with pics, this weekend! |

this begs the obvious question... why do this vs buying a $300-600 portable nav that is just as good?
I cannot see how it is worth $2k just to have he factory nav, which are usually no better then a $300 nav unit? I cannot se spending $1700 for "integration" |

Because it's clean FTMFW |

True enough "Livin"!! I've got a Garmin Nuvi 660 and IMHO it is a vastly superior NAV unit than the Nissan/Infiniti DVD-based nav units, (or any DVD-based NAV units for that matter.) It is more intuitive, more portable (Duh!), higher resolution, features more screen detail, has TTS (Text-to-Speech) capability, MP3 player, Bluetooth phone interface, etc., etc., etc.
I did this for the challenge, to prove it COULD be done, for the "integration", and the "coolness"factor. Those attributes are certainly worth more to some people than they are to others!! :7:

I agree with you. If I don't need the color display and the
controller, that alone would save possibly $3000 or more.
I am anxiously awaiting your story and parts list & pics
on your adventure with oem navigation
Thanks |

Hey 07Murano,
Sounds like OEM navigation is pretty important to you. Since you bought an '07, how come you didn't just buy one with navigation?? Not available?? Didn't think you wanted it?? Something else??
Cheers!

I did not realize how much I liked navigation until
I tried it, and then it was too late. Besides, the one
I have is merlot color, and I really liked it from the get
go, plus a pretty good price!
My thought that if you could install oem navigation in a
03' (first year they were out) I would think it would be
easier (and less parts) with a 07'. I realize it will still
cost alot of money, but like you said the challenge may
be worth it. Plus I believe things in the morano have
changed from 03 to 07'. Not sure, just guessing.
Thanks |
|
|
| phoenix54 |
Well the thing that makes this "upgrade" the most difficult is the fact that there are about 50 different wiring harnesses for the Murano depending on what options are added when it is built. That means it is not as simple as buying the NAV unit and the antenna and plugging it into the existing harness on your MO. That's why I had to buy the main harness for a MO WITH navigation, isolate and extract the part of the harness I needed, and patch it into the harness in my NO-NAV MO. I doubt that Nissan has changed that mentality from 03 to 07, but you might check with your dealer. I would think the service department should know.
Cheers!

I would not think that they would have that many different harnesses for the Murano.
I would think that they would have the main wiring there
and add as seen fit for different options.
Thanks |

| Yeah, it surprised me too!! :8: |

For those who want to add navigation and already have a colored screen why not use the Garmin GVN 52? You would have to get the Navbox but you need that for DVD/PS2 hook up anyways.
I don't have the GVN 52 but it looks like a good solution for those who want to display GPS via their display screen. Only issue I wasn't sure about is how the audio would work. Not sure how easy it would be to mute the radio when the voice directions were given. Still, I think it would be an option worth looking into, especially if your looking at a $2000 upgrade for OEM navigation. |

| Maybe I missed it, but you had an orange screen and converted it to color with NAV. Does the new color screen also show all the controls for radio, heater, etc.? |
|
|
| phoenix54 |
Hi Zebelkhan,
Yes, all of the AV/AC and radi information is displayed exactly as if it came from the factory that way. See attached.

I have looked into the Gvn 52. I also have someone looking
into tapping into my color screen and moving oem screen out
of sight and putting a touch screen with navigation in place
of it. Hooking it up so that that if you hit AUX on the touch
screen it would display the normal factory info etc. that would
only be controlled by the joystick not touch, but then put a
switch some place to switch back to the navi screen with touch.
Do you think this is possible? The installer I am working with
seems to think so.
Thanks |

Hi 07Murano,
I had planned to do this last weekend but unexpected events made that impossible. I plan to try and get all of this info posted, with pics, THIS weekend! :banghead:
