auto headlights on/off = DRL? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm importing a 07 MO SE from the US to Canada. The Canadian regulation requires the function of "Daytime Running Light (DRL)". Since I could not find it from the MO spec, I asked the dealer to install it for me before I pickup it. This will cost me $100.

When I check the Canadian MO spec, I could not find DRL neither. What was common in both the US and Canadian spec was "automatic headlights on/off". I'm wondering if "automatic headlights on/off" is equivalent to DRL. Any idea?

FYI: DRL means when the engin is started and the parking break is released, the headlights (lamps OR foglights OR turning indicators) are turned on automatically.

Thanks a lot for your input!

I would imagine if the Canadian-spec Owners Manual refers to the DRLs as "automatic headlights on/off" then that is what Nissan is calling them. Or maybe the DRLs are not mentioned in the manual and the "automatic headlights on/off" refer to the normal automatic operation of the headlights.

One hundred dollars for the mod? That is very good. I wonder if the mod is accomplished through the addition of hardware or with the Consult-II tool. Did the dealer say how he was doing the DRL upgrade?

Thanks njjoe for the quick response.

Could you elaborate a little bit on the behaviors of "the normal automatic operation of the headlights"?

Actually, the dealer mentioned to install "auto headlights on/off" that's where the confusion came from.

Victor-

The following is from the 2007 Owners Manual.

njjoe,

Thanks a lot for the clarification. I'll contact the dealer to make sure they're doing the right thing.

I would sure like to know what the dealer does for $100 that will give you DRLs on a US Spec car.
Is that with HIDs or Halogen?

I would love to have DRLs.

DRL and Auto On/Off are not the same thing, not at all.

DRL in the Canadian MO's illuminate the fog lights when the ignition is turned on. Auto ON/OFF headlights turn the headlights on and off when the ambient light dictates, driven by the sensors on the dash.

I can't imagine that wiring the DRL would be difficult at all. Certainly well worth the $100, especially considering the $10k you just saved getting the car down south...

Fog lights?

That's what Canada thinks is DRLs?

I was thinking of reduced voltage headlamps as is MUCH more typical IMO.

And it cannot be just when the ignition is turned on can it?
Doesn't it have to sense when the Parking brake is released?

I would think it would be a firmware mod in the EPDM....
Most of the US wiring mods posted on the forum made the fogs DRL, just like the factory..

I am going to guess that the reason why it uses the foglights for DRLs in the MO is because the HID bulbs will not function at low power, and its simpler to design a system that will work on all Muranos, than a different one for halogen MOs and another for HID MOs.

No, that's what Nissan uses on this particular car for DRL's. Most cars/manufacturers do use reduced voltage on their headlamps. Any light on the front of the car is better than no light, IMO. Does the US/any state legislate DRL's for any vehicle type yet? School buses?

Good point about the parking brake. I do know that did use to be the case, not sure if it is any longer as it has been a long time since I last went to a drive-in movie, and I live on the prairie so I have never actually used the parking brake. My ears actually pop every time I go up a little hill....

Yea the MO uses the fog as the DRL.... I would also love to know how the dealer will do it for $100.

You guys are just going to love this one. It is an excerpt from the Service Manual that explains the operation of the "Daytime Light System". Rumor has it that the guy who wrote this was demoted and transfered to the fuel shield design team. Enjoy!

After reading the Service Manual, it appears the DRL mod is accomplished through a BCM (Body Control Module) program change.

Just hope the tech who does the work speaks Japaglish. How do they let fubar's like that slip through? Now it is even more evident why they do not service/repair the CVT's. Just imagine how those instructions would translate.

Sure wish I knew how to do that.
