Winter Wiper Blades - Click HERE for Original Thread

Can anyone recommend wiper blades that actually work! I live in Ontario Canada and we have some wicked winter days. My blades now, don't even touch the windshield. I was just going to go to Canadian Tire and buy anything. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I was also told to buy a 28" for the drivers side and a 22" for the passenger side. Is this right?

Standard size is 25/26 (L) and 21(R). 28 is way too long. I like a shorter blade in snow, say 24 (L). 24 is easier to find and less expensive too...
One of the new style (Bosch Icon, Trico latitude) may work well in snow, but I have no experience in that kind of weather. I believe Canadian Tire carries some house brand in that style.

Hi ella138;
I've got the Canadian Tire's "Reflex" wipers on my mo (24"/20") and have had them for about year. They were OK for a little while; but I have found that the 24" one is noisy. The noisy is like a slapping sound and is made by the wiper blade at the return point when the wiper is on its way back down from the top. There isn't enough torsional stiffness so the wiper blade slaps the windsheild as the squeegy? folds over on its way down. The factory blades were better than these. They have been ok in the winter but I will get something different before the winter.

I have used Canadian Tires reflex wipers on both of my cars and thay have worked year round for the last 2-years. They have worked so well that my daughter put them on her honda and loves them.

Mine do not squeak, however I use rainx all the time.

Anyone have the part #'s for the Bosch Icons that'll fit?

Ella, I live in saskatoon and i am sure we have pretty wicked weather than what you guys get in TO. we had the blizzard earlier this year and a 20 min ride (including picking my wife and kid) took me 4.5 hrs and i was in snow for the whole of that time using the OEM wipers with blades replaced in december of '06. i will recommend using the original wipers with replacing blades every other year (a mere $25 expense) as compared to reflex by CDN Tire. i used them on my taurus and was not impressed at all by their performance as compared to the original Nissan wipers. yes they got an advantage of curve but if you properly remove snow from the edges of the blades, i am sure any blade will work good. and if u got ice stuck at the edge, no matter what blade u got, u wouldnt be lucky !! ....

just my US$.02..... lol...... since CDN$ is a bit higher now ....

Get a set of Silblades - they do not freeze and remain pliable no matter how cold it gets. I've had zero problems with them during the winter, whereas my OEM wipers froze instantly and would only wipe half the windshield.

I was interested in this wiper problem. I read several of the other wiper threads, but this appeared to have the latest posts. I see that freezing wiper blades and difficulties cleaning off the blades isn't unique.

I had written this up before I read the other threads.

First of all, it is hard to clean the blades off from where they rest under the hood cowl. They may look clean, but actually have ice on them.

If ice has formed on the blade and I forget to clean it off, the A/C front defrost takes forever to melt that off, even if the fan is turned on high.

I'm only 5'3" and have to use an extendible ice scraper/brush as it is.
I've taken to banging down on the wipers sideways with my ice scraper to try to knock off ice. Probably not good for the blade mechanism and not always effective.

With ice on the blades the wiper is essentially useless. And sometimes it's difficult to pull off the road to clean it after one gets going.

Sure, I can use up expensive gas idling in the parking lot with the blower defrost on high, but who can afford that?

Then there are the times when sleet runs down the glass while I'm driving on the interstate and freezes to the blades.

The back window ends up cleared off much faster than the front! Of course, that's due to the embedded defrosting elements. (Side issue: couldn't they come up with thread-like filaments for front windshield that wouldn't impede the clarity of the glass?)

The other problem I was going to mention is apparently actually the blade itself freezing stiff. When this happens it arcs so that it is useless.

Since my drive home from work lasts only about 15 minutes. If the defrost takes longer to work on the blades, I'm not seeing it.

This is the first car I've had though, where I've noticed a particular problem with the air defrost not melting off the blades while at rest or when wiping.

I have made note of several special brands of replacement blades that posters to this thread and others have recommended and will look to getting some. It appears that's what I need.

I still think the front defrost ought to heat up the rested wiper blade area as well as the glass. How come nobody has designed a heated wiper blade?
