Shifter trim coming off

Looks like the wife?s rings on her right hand have caused some damage to the chrome plated plastic trim around the shifter. I took it into the dealership as the car is 17-18 months and has 9800km (have a few other vehicles). Looks like they are going to change the knob on warranty. I?d recommend you let your spouses know that their rings can take the finish right off and to be careful. Not a very durable trim.

I have the same issue with my 2015 but itís just from regular wear as I have no rings on my right hand.

have you taken in it to the dealership? trim that you put your hand on should be extra durable.
chroming plastic was always a stupid idea.

My warranty is passed so I have not taken it to the dealer. I figure that Iíll replace it myself sometime in the near future.

I think I'd put a nice soft piece of tanned leather over it and figure out a "boot" that I could sew in place.

Question is, why is it wearing so fast? Does she drive with her hand on that shift lever? If so, that's a very bad habit that reduces her control over the vehicle - the best solution is to stop doing that.

She doesn't drive with hand on shifter, she wears an eternity ring on her right hand that has prongs and diamonds all the way around the ring. Given as how she doesn't pay attention, i am sure it gets scuffed up when shifting into gear or backing out of our driveway.

I don't want to generalize but, my wife is a mess when driving cars. Careless.
If she and I are going somewhere we have an agreement that she doesn't drive with me in the car.

She pulls the "mommy brain" card on me all the time (we have 3 kids)...anyways that's a story for another day (or a therapist)...

Interesting, since you mentioned this issue I've looked at how I have my hand on shift knob. When I'm shifting, its just my fingertips that actually press the shift button. My palm is still 1/4" away. She must have either small hands or puts her hand tight to the top of the shifter so that the ring can scratch it.

That makes a boot over the shifter a bit more attractive. That ring sounds like it will chew up almost anything over time, so if you replace the knob it will just happen again. Not a defect or warranty issue, since it's owner-caused damage.

mine is also coming off in my '15. I don't wear any rings. It's cheap chrome plating over plastic so it's bound to peel off. I suspect the replacement will also peel within 2 years as well.

dealer swapped the shifter on warranty, also changed my driver side rear view mirror as there was a little defect in the mirror.
yes user caused the damage my argument is that it should be more durable.
over all good service from my dealership.

Same problem here. 2015 platinum and the shifter knob last rim is peeling. It's an automatic, my wife's car, and NEITHER of us keep our hand's on it. This is a VERY cheap piece of material that unfortunately was a poor design. For a Platinum model, it should have been leather. We have a gold warranty and got it replaced. Shame on the designers who skimped on this. Or perhaps they don't know what Arizona heat will do to materials they design....it does look nice but not practical. In no way does body oil or rings/jewelry have anything to do with it (in my opinion), it looks like cheap-o design. But glad to see they fixed it. The other problem was the sunroof screen! It bunched up and was a major costly replacement. Still love Nissan, and LOVE this car.

Hey Pilgrim,

Thanks for the link. I just ordered one in black. My 2009 LE had a leather shift knob and I really missed it after using the bowling-ball plastic thing on my 2017.5 Midnight Edition. It should finish off what Nissan skimped on.

Thanks again and take care!

Let us know what you think. The only review said it was missing the thread needed to attach it, but it looks good.
