Hi,

Just got a new Murano and I'm wondering if anyone who has installed a hitch has the motion-activated lift gate? Nissan claims that in order to add a hitch to a Murano with this feature, it requires them to swap out the ECU. I assume that would be an additional cost both for the new unit and the labor, and I'm guessing that it simply disables the motion-activated feature. However, there is a Q/A on e-trailers website that says the MALG will work fine with their hitch, you just have to wave your foot a bit to the side. So I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with either of these options. Thanks!

I saw that on etrailers as well. I bought my hitch from them and love the hitch, but MALG does not work anymore because sensor is obstructed. No big deal for me and the sensor will work fine if I ever remove the hitch.

Is a trailer type hitch the only type that works on the Murano? It seems to be the way everyone is going.

I have a Saris bike rack that I used on an Xterra that is the type where the straps fastened over the hatch top and bottom and it rested against the back window.

Will that type of bike carrier work on the Murano? I always wondered if the straps over the top would damage the spoiler when the carrier was loaded with the weight of the bikes. I realize with that type of carrier that it blocks access to the hatch area.

The spoiler is plastic - I would not risk it. The trailer hitch mount racks are much more stable, can be locked and some offer swing away access to the hatch.

And so is the rear hatch! Double no-no! Hitch mount is the way to go with a Murano.

Take care!

Just a word - no one but you cares whether your trailer hitch is visible from behind. Just make sure it's painted black. They aren't hard to bolt on, and the threaded holes are already in place.

If you're just carrying bike racks, you don't even need an electrical harness. But if you need one, buy the Nissan factory harness. They plug into the harness and work. Yes, they cost a few bucks more but they save you a lot of headaches.

You have some great advice here. I have a 2015, and purchased a Curt hitch and harness online and shipped to me. Installation took less than an hour for both, working by myself. The wiring harness was dead simple. All plugs were there as I was told thru YouTube videos. Very easy install! A second set of hands to hold the hitch while you bolt it up would make it even easier!

Just for the record, the hatch is made of steel on 3rd gen unlike previous gen; however the spoiler is plastic so hitch mount is the way to go like you said! Roof mount is another option if bikes are light as it's easy to drop one on the roof and cause serious damage...Just thinking about it gives me the creepsThat's why I also have a hitch mount bike rack on all my vehicles for the past 20 years.

Hey Freedom 55,

Thanks for setting the record straight!

I really should have known that after the few times I popped off the hatch interior panel to access the wire harness.

Take care!

Jim
