For $1,500 (What I can find on eBay), seems pretty pricey for limited functionality that any smartphone does far better with Waze, Google Maps, etc.

For a lot less, you would be better off with a Grom unit like this, that also comes with better smartphone integration:

Didn't realize that. Might still be cheaper to find a used Nissan OEM nav unit and install it and then add the Grom unit.

Either way, $1,500 for nav that isn't half as good as Waze, which is free, seems like a waste to me.

Possibly, but the wiring harnesses behind the dash might be different, so hard to say without doing a detailed parts lookup.

sorry about my lack of knowledge on this subject.
i was checking ebay for the nav units.
am i looking for the ones that look like the front panel with the climate controls and just a green panel behind it or am i looking for the box instead?

i really appreciate the help.

Apologies - I'm really not sure as I've never tackled this project. I'm mainly speculating based on what I know of other Nissan/Infinitis.
You'd want to search the parts diagrams and determine if the wiring harness is the same part number, and look at the different head units and research the part numbers.

EDIT: Looks like from a quick search that the main wiring harness for the dashboard has different part numbers for Muranos with and without Nav.
Can't tell beyond that what exactly the differences are, but likely you'd have trouble retrofitting Nav in an SV trim without Nav from the factory, as you'd first need to install the harness, or run new wiring:
