2004 Nissan Murano Whining Noise Driver side

Hello all,

Ive been having some charging issues with my Murano. (Brake and Batt light ) Coming on, and im on my second alternator. All grounds checked, everything good there.

Around the time i had the first Alternator replaced i feel this sound started to occur at the drivers side. (See video: 2004 Nissan Murano Whining Noise It happens multiple times and even more when accelerating / starting. It almost sounds like a pump thats running dry. All fluids are topped off.

Does anyone know what this is or if it could be related with the issues in my charging system? Battery has been staying charged around 13 - 14 when running, however the brake and battery light are coming on and tripping out my acceleration from 100% power to 0% back to 100% power. Very odd all while the battery is charged still before and after. Thanks

See my other post for some more info on my charging system issues.

In the video you linked, what exactly did you do right before the noise started? Was that when you turned the ignition on?

Yes, that was just turning the key - I’m assuming an electronic actuator or pump but not sure.

Sounds like it might be throttle body. Have someone else sit in the car and turn the ignition on/off while you watch the throttle plate and see if that's what is making the noise. If it isn't, use a mechanic's stethoscope and listen around the engine compartment until you pinpoint the source.
My daughter complained about a goofy noise when driving. Then one day it didn't want to start. It was very low on oil, oil added fixed it.

She needs to start checking oil weekly (or more often) if she's letting it get low.
Yeah it’s not the oil level……

it’s some pump or actuator making that noise. Not sure if it has to do with my charging system issues or not. Batt is reading 14.0-14.45 v when running idle, so it’s being charged. Then when accelerating the battery and brake light come on. Then when at a stop light (back to idle) it turns off. Very odd
Check the negative battery terminal ground connection under the battery and at the CVT.

The video sounded like the noise is coming from the throttle body, which has an electronic actuator. Of course, this is speculation from watching a video so you'll have to see for yourself to confirm.

Not likely. The noise is happening when the engine is off.

Check alternator belt tension (...1st gen uses a manual belt tensioner). If the alternator belt is loose and/or worn, it may be slipping when the engine is under load. You can test this by having someone power brake the engine to 2,500 RPMs briefly to simulate an engine load while you watch the alternator belt to see if it stops moving.

Good point regarding the belt tension. I believe the '04 has the old style drive belts like my '03 had. It can be challenging to tension it, especially after years of rusting... I'd replace the belt if it's old.

I used this inexpensive tool to check the tension of mine:
Amazon.com: Gates 91132 Krikit V-Ribbed Belt Tension Gauge, Black : Automotive
You may want to check your regulator harness on the alternator and look for signs of heat damage, melting, dry rot etc. I just had the same charging system problem with the brake and battery light. Turned out to be the regulator harness and/or the alternator.
