A short story of a P0420 code. A certain Geo Metro kept getting that nice code off and on for a long time, fooled around with many things to fix it. I knew the O2 sensors were fine as well as the Cat, since they were changed during an engine swap not too long before the code popping up when it felt like it. One day my brother checking around what we've worked on many times some vacuum solenoids for egr etc. and what does he find? Wires that have rubbed together enough to wear off enough insulation to make contact and short together. Once they were moved away from each other, no more code.
Mice and rodents can also cause some nice electrical problems from chewing the tasty plastic wire insulation, had that happen on an old subaru that would throw a knock sensor code.
And always remember to check the battery ground where it attaches to the frame and engine.
