NOTE: IF THE BRAKE AND BATTERY WARNING LIGHTS COME ON TOGETHER, THERE IS AN IMMINENT ALTERNATOR FAILURE WHICH WILL COMPLETELY DISABLE YOUR VEHICLE. FAILURE MAY OCCUR AT ANY TIME. LIMIT THE DRAIN ON YOUR BATTERY AND GET TO A LOCATION FROM WHICH THE VEHICLE CAN BE SAFELY TOWED IF NECESSARY. CONTACT NISSAN SERVICE IMMEDIATELY TO HAVE THE ALTERNATOR REPLACED.

UPDATE 7/14/05:
With the news of the alternator recall, I have decided to no longer update the Alternator Failure List with new reports by members of alternator failures.

I appreciate all who have participated in getting the word out about the problem alternators. You have done a great service for everyone who reads this forum! And thanks as well to those who went a step further and filed a complaint with the NHTSA. It shows we can make a difference.

For more information on the Murano alternator recall, please see the Recall Thread. I encourage everyone interested in this topic to post there.

Thanks again to everyone! :D

Great Posts! And if you dont mind me adding more:

NTHSA does notice this alt complain.
See this thread:http://www.nissanmurano.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2591

Forum members with failed alt and have not voted / filed a complain to NTHSA, please do so!.

8 reasons why you should:
---
1.
You will help forum members whose murano has not suffered the alternator failure <prevention>

2.
You will help nissan not to be mitsubishi #2 which hides defects and in the end lost a majority of its customers. If you are a nissan anthusiast, surely this means something.

3.
You will get refunds from nissan of north america (NNA) on all cost incurred when you have had your alternator failed and when you were being stranded in the middle of nowhere (hotels, towing, rentals etc)

4.
Let say your alternator had failed and it was replaced. Fine~.
But in near future, what is the guarantee this new replacment alternator will not fail you again? None!
Consider this:
IF NTHSA forced nissan to issue a recall and the replacement alt of yours do fail *after* the basic warranty expired, you will have a stronger case to claim for a free-of-charge repair. The so called "known-defect" of the alternator will be in accordance to NTHSA investigation and it will be very difficult for NNA to turn-down the claim.

5.
You will help nissan to bump up its consumer report scores.
Having well known defect on alternator is bad enough for reliability reviews. Bad reliability make the resale price of murano go downhill couple years from now, especially when you want to trade your murano in. How many visitors to this forum have changed their mind not to buy a murano because of all this buzz of alternator defect stuff?

6.
You spent $30K+ for the murano and yet you are afraid to take it on the road for long roadtrip because the alternator may fail you.
Yet, you call your credit card company and try to negotiate for lower APR. Might as well, pay off those loans with the $15K and buy a hyundai with 10yrs/10K miles warranty with the change. It is your money, NNA should earn it~

7.
If your alternator fails (or fails again), and let say your daughter or wife is driving the murano on highway. It will be inherently dangerous as the engine looses power and the batery discharges. It can be hit by another car when all-of-sudden the murano come to a stop/halt on the fast lanes.

8.
This is for those of you who do mods i.e engine mod, audio visual system, navsystem, hid retrofit, etc that involve drawing power from the batery.
If your alternator fails, will a few shady dealers try to blame it on your mods? No warranty work! Because you install those DVD player in the murano. Causing current overload and the alternator failure. Yada yada...

We can make a difference!

Re: 40% failure

First, what a great post. It really showcases the problem in black & white. Now, regarding "40% failure among forum members". I think that may be overstating a bit. I for one, haven't voted because you can't change your vote once you tally (or if you can, I don't know how) and if I tally "no" now, not only am I tempting murphy's law, but I can't change that to a yes if it fails tomorrow. Its a little different from the "SE v;s SL" poll, since none of us are going to go outside one day and find our SL's became SE's ;)

Sorry to nitpick, but shouldn't that be "40% of respondents"?

Add me to the list. I have a 2003 model year SL that failed at 12416 miles.

I have not voted for the same reason.

I agree with the above. It should not be a poll, but rather a simple list of failed alternators. In order to calculate the failure rate we would need to know the MO population, representative sample etc. What this poll shows is that out of XX people who voted 40% had failed alternators. To me it is much more important to know how many alternators failed at what milage as it would give some indication of the severity of the problem.

And please lodge the complaint with NTHSA!!!

EVERYONE: PLEASE VOTE, EVEN IF YOU HAVE NOT HAD A FAILURE!

I can change the poll numbers if you have a failure later, so it's not an issue, just PM me and I'll do it.

I think it's important that we get a reasonable and accurate representation of the failure rate. If you wait until yours fails (if it ever fails) we won't have an accurate representation of folks that read this thread.

Hmmm... Maybe I should put a note to that effect, up top.

Oh, and even if you just like to read, not post, please contribute to this poll.

Thanks! :)

I voted "no" a long time ago.
Thank goodness, and knock on wood, that I am not as superstitious as some of y'all.

dmtreff (12416 mi) and Cheryls MO (3000 mi) added to the list.

And yes, please vote in the poll, regardless of whether your alternator has failed or not so that we can get a larger sampling. Jaak will change your vote in the poll if necessary later.

Yeah, it's bad luck to be superstitious!

Jaak, thanks for the note urging everyone to vote. I voted no, and in reviewing the comments, I see you made the same comments back in July about being able to change votes. 39k mi, no failure. Highest-mileage failure on the list was at 38k mi. May be getting out of the woods, here. Picking the car up this am for the "shaky braky" TSB, I'll mention it to my service guy nnd see if he keeps any in stock.

Yeah, I want to try to get some level of accuracy. At the same time it's good to document failures, but I don't believe that 40% failure rate is accurate. However I do believe it's significant enough that Nissan has a real issue that needs to be addressed. If this poll is to make a difference, then the more votes, the better. From both sides.
