How does he drive it? Does he drive like a grandma or a high schooler?

Then I would guess the Monroes would be OK.

My last experience with Monroes was on a 280ZX and they were a bad match for that car - too soft and bottomed out. But this was years ago. When I replaced shocks in my Murano I went to an aftermarket performance shock just to have a bit firmer ride.

You know you're safe if you just go online and buy OEM shocks from one of the online Nissan parts sources. If they like the ride now, that's a good way to match it.

I put Monroe quick struts on my Sequoia because they were cheap and easy. Springs came mounted on the shocks so no messing with a spring compressor. They were intended to be OEM ride like and that's what they were. About the same as OEM. Nothing special. They've been fine for me on that vehicle but I don't have experience with the type used on the Murano. The Monroes don't score you any cool points and lots of people in the off-road world crap on them but they're about the cheapest and easiest option for that vehicle. I think I'll be replacing the struts on my new-to-me Murano soon so I'm interested in this topic.

I tried KYBs on my 2003 AWD SE and hated them. Far too stiff and they made the car jolt and bounce all over the place. Returned them and replaced them for Monroe quickies and the ride was nice.

I don’t understand. What if not Monroe’s higher lines are people able to use?

And don’t argue OEM is better than high end Monroe or KYB because I won’t believe it.
can you elaborate?
I'm asking because I have heard and read mixed reviews on Monroe parts in general. Here I'm able to speak to a group of people that have the same car and can give sound advice and point in the right direction.

Kyb is great from what I hear but out of the budget.

It’s just googling.

Have you looked at Bilstein? I think the B4 is the closest to OEM feel but it’s going to be much higher quality than OEM junk that leaked at 11,000 miles on ours.

Bilstein is among the very best, but if the KYB was out of the budget, I'm sure Bilstein will also be.

Just FYI, I went through three sets of struts under normal use, and three sets replaced due to accidents over my 18 years and 300,000 miles with my 2003 AWD SE.

The SE was the sport package that had a stiffer, tighter suspension for more aggressive driving and better handling. The SL was the luxury trim that had softer suspension that provided a more comfortable ride. I was told back then that shocks and struts for each trim were different. I suspect that if I'd bought KYB for SL, I would've had the ride I was looking for that the Monroes provided.

Also FYI, on the two sets of Monroes, I drove over lots of frost heaves and even did a little light off-roading. I wasn't overly careful after the 200,000 mile mark, and decided to have some fun. I replaced the fronts after five years. One coil spring did break at about the five-year mark.

I suggest you ask a Monroe dealer.
