Anyone experienced the following:

On a mild incline, after placing the car in park and releasing the brake pedal, the car rolls.....about 5-6 inches.

I've driven other vehicles (not Muranos) to see if the same thing happens....not one of them rolls.

Just had my 2004 Murano 3,750-mile service today and the dealer says this is normal behavior.

Most Automatics I've owned have done this, but not moved quite as much as the Murano does.

It is normal for the Murano.

Agree with Jaak post, my Mo is also doing this.

It is 'normal' for murano, and i dont know technically why. Perhaps someone in this forum who are more familiar with cvt tech can explain?

Given that, sometimes it is 'dangerous' to have this Murano to roll 5 - 6 inches after gear in 'park'.

Example, when you are parallel parking with small space at the front/rear, or when you are parking on a thight spot with walls at front/behind. You dont want the murano to roll even slightly after you switch to P position and hit that car/wall in front of you, do you? In such situations, commonly after i switch the gear to P, while holding the break pedal, i press the parking brake and then I release the brake pedal. This will prevent the vehicle to roll 5-6 inches like you experienced.

Yes, mine does the same. I was kind of surprised but once you get used to it...........no problem......

It would probably help to understand how "Park" works on a regular automatic transmission.

You can find that out by going to

which includes the verbage

"When the shift lever is placed in park, the rod pushes the spring against the small tapered bushing. If the park mechanism is lined up so that it can drop into one of the notches in the OUTPUT GEAR SECTION, the tapered bushing will push the mechanism down. If the mechanism is lined up on one of the high spots on the output, then the spring will push on the tapered bushing, but the lever will not lock into place until the car rolls a little and the teeth line up properly. This is why sometimes your car moves a little bit after you put it in park and release the brake pedal -- it has to roll a little for the teeth to line up to where the parking mechanism can drop into place. "




Now, how does the Murano CVT compensate for not having an "OUTPUT GEAR SECTION"?

Getting rolled

My driveway has a very nice incline and, yes I have the roll back happen all the time.
Using the parking brake barely makes a difference.....it still rolls back more than any other vehicle I've had.

It startled me at first, but now I don't mind it at all....I factor in my roll back when parking in the driveway :21:

That's interesting, I always use my parking brake when on any sort of incline. (Which is why the transmission roll doesn't bother me.) I do it for a couple of reasons.

First, I don't want the weight of the vehicle on the mechanism that locks the transmission, as it really bugs me on cars when you shift out and hear this big "clunk" as it releases, because it's under pressure from the vehicle. Just doesn't sound healthy to me.

And second, I don't think it's safe to rely only on your transmission and differentials to keep the vehicle in place on an incline.

I've done this for decades, so it's habit, not something I specifically started when driving the Murano.

So while I notice the larger than a convential automatic, roll, every day in my garage, I'm used to it and because I expect it, it doesn't bug me.

For me it could be added to the "Little things I'd tweak if I was designing the Murano" list... I think it would be near the bottom though!:4:

Come on fellas, the MO is rolling backwards becuase the rubber band in the CVT stretches. :bonk:

I agree completely. It surprises me that people would rather put stress on their transmission parking pawl than use the parking brake for its intended purpose.

Tyring to add some more joke...

CVT uses rubber band? I thought the salesman told me it uses carbon nanotube materials, much stronger than kevlar. :2:

Everytime you roll back 6 inches in park, you're smashing the hamster than spins the pulleys in there. Poor Hammy.....
