Hi Gang,

We are kind I in a tight spot here. We are at a Target and my young son is asleep in the back of the car. My wife got in the car and pressed the brake without her key. Now we can't start the car. We've tried inserting our key, but we still have to press down the brake. We can't call dealers because they're closed on a Sunday. We have a 2009 LE. Any ideas? It's ridiculous if you can't start the car with a key :)

I've read this a couple of times and I don't really understand ... are you saying that:

- Your wife got into the car without her key (as in the key was nowhere near the car at all), and tried to start it.
- Then you tried to start the car with the key present and it won't start.

I have forgotten to take my key a few times when leaving home, and tried to start the car. After I went back inside to get the key it started up with no problem.

Use the key fob to lock and then unlock the car. This will reset the theft deterrent system if it kicked it. It is worth a try and let us know if it works.
2young2retire, this is incorrect.. It will not do as you suggest.

If in fact they tried to start the vehicle multiple times without the fob and the theft deterrent system activated, then the vehicle will have to be flat towed to the dealership. Service Dept. will get things back to square one.

Probably too late by now but getting out of the car, locking it with the fob and unlocking it again will clear the it. Did it once before, although at the time I didn't know what was happening or why doing this worked..lol.

It happened to us something very similar, and we could not start the car with any of the two fobs. I disconnected the battery for about 5 minutes. After that I reconnected the cable back, and the car started without any problem. Give it a try, I hope it will work for you too.

Had the same problem after I pushed it out of the garage without starting the car. (used my key to put in neutral) Then I could not start it. (theft system?) Wife got her key and it started. This has happened twice. Even Nissan at 800 number could not figure it out, but said they have heard of this before. We have 2009 LE AWD.

You are correct. Key fob may not work. But unless generation 2 MO is unique, closing all the doors and locking and unlocking using the physical key resets both alarm system, as well as immobilizer system.

I have a 2011 Murano the exact same thing happened to me and from reading up I thought it was the brake pedal switch but when my vehicle was examined....it was the battery....I got a nee battery and everything seems to be working fine.
