We are about to take delivery of our new 04 SL AWD. I asked our salesman about the cost of an additional key. After checking, he quoted me a price of $288.04. This is said to cover the cost of the key blank, the remote, and programming.

Is this really the prevailing cost?

Can anyone suggest a less expensive alternative?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure of the MO, but most cars have a way that you can program it yourself. so if you can find someone with the parts, you can get someone to cut it for you, then program it yourself..

I'll check the service manual and see if there are instructions to do it.

HEY! WAIT A MINUTE!

You can't program a key.
I really don't think that is in the manual.
Or am I wrong? What manual?

Fobs are easy. Keys are hard.
It's done that way on purpose.

At least on every remote entry car I have ever owned (and thats a lot of em) that's the way it has been.......

Being that the key has an anti-theft chip in it I guess you are at the mercy of the dealership to get a blank key anyway.

BTW, if the dealer is going to be programming fobs, make sure you take him ALL the fobs. They have to be programmed all at once.

Homer,

It's just the keys that HAVE to be programmed all at once and only by the dealer.

Key Fobs can be programmed by the owner following the fairly simple instructions in the service manual.

I know that you can program the fob to do the seat etc.

But can you do the Fob to open The car????

I doubt that very much.

you can get keys made by a locksmith. they have blank keys w/chips that can be programmed. they just need both sets of your factory keys to do it. had keys made for my parents jeep, when i got their car starter. i think they were $65.

1. Close all doors

2. Insert key into ignition and remove it from the ignition key cylinder more than six times within 10 seconds.
(Your Hazard Lamps will flash if you have performed this step successfully.)
NOTE: Withdraw key completely from ignition cylinder each time.
NOTE: If this procedure is performed too fast, system will not enter programming mode.

3. Insert key into the ignition cylinder and turn to the ACC position.

4. Within 5 seconds, push ANY button on the remote transmitter ONCE. (Hazard Lamps will flash twice).
At this point, the oldest ID code is erased and the new ID code is entered.

NOTE: Do not press the button more than one time in the above step.
If the button is pressed more than one time, the programming
procedure will not be successful.

5. A maximum of four ID codes may be entered.
If more than four ID codes are entered, the oldest ID code will be erased.
If there are any remaining transmitters (including the old ones),
follow steps 6 and 7 for each transmitter (including existing
transmitters)

6. Lock doors using the driver’s side power lock/unlock switch
7. Push any button on remote controller once (do this within 5 seconds)
(Hazard warning lamps will then flash twice)
At this time, the oldest ID code is erased, and the new ID code is entered.

9. Open Driver's side front door.

Lots of transponder keys on ebay. Appear to be about $59. Stay away form the low priced sellers ($19). They have too many negatives.
Happy Thanksgiving all!

You don't actually enter a code. The code is automatically entered for you. When it states "the oldest ID code is erased and the new ID code is entered", it's just telling you what has happened to the remote at that point.

Also, when it states that four ID codes may be entered, it means four remotes can be programmed for one vehicle.

blah

The best you can do is find an authorized locksmith that can cut and program nissan keys. Then buy a remote on ebay and program it urself as others already suggested to you.
I can get the key cut and programmed for about $100 here in NY.
And remotes are like $15 on ebay, so you do the math ;)

On the other hand, why do you need more then 3 keys ?!
Don't forget that Valet key is as usable as all others, nobody ever locks the glove compartment anymore and all you need then is a $15 remote ;)
