Steve, I am trying to remember how dark your tint was from when I saw your car, but I dont really remember. Does it match the back tint or is it lighter?

Hmm not the ticket ..sorry, I receive the fine in the mail. My tint is lighter then the factory from the sides you can see it is lighter, but I feel by tinting the fronts slightly it makes the others seem darker too, or maybe that just me too.

NY gives out a permit for tinted windows. Just call or visit dmv and ask for form MV-80W. You need a doctor's note explaining a reason why you can not be in the sun (for example, some skin medication or antibiotics, unless you know a doctor)

Yerp

I got 20% tint on my front windows and it mathces the factory tint perfectly. I live in Jersey where any tint on the front windows is illegal and I have never gotten pulled over for it.

Actually just took the whip for a thousand mile trip from New Jersey to West Virginia University

Here's what the tint looks like

Nice Sw1tched!

I am in North Jersey, can you tell me where you got the tint job and how much? Also, I am contemplating a GPS and was thinking of going with a Magellan but I have a Zire 72 and I am hesitant to use it for a GPS. Can you give me feedback on how you like or dislike using your palm as a GPS?

Thanks! njmo

I got the tint job right down the street from you at Illusions on Route 10 West. It cost me 80 for both windows to get done.

As far as the Zire 72 GPS goes, I have no complaints and I've been using it for a while now. It does the job just as well as the Magellan or other portable GPS units and it'll save you a lot of cash if you already have the palm. Good luck :D

P.S. I actually am originally from West Orange :)

I used to have tint on a previous car... in MASS... it was of legal tint in MASS... however I was driving through NH where tint is illegal and I got pulled. Luckily the officer was nice enough just to give a warning. Later I was going to school in NH so between that and always worrying about scratches I just removed it and called it a day.

I have black MO and would love to tint it... it would look good but I don't want the hassle of it all.

3M™ Color-Stable Automotive Window Films CS-20

Aaron at Complete Window Tinting did my front two at lunch time today. He's been tinting for over 20 years .
The 1st question he asked was if I had Navigation [NAV] or Satellite Radio. Apparently the metal in the standard film can interfere with the satellite signal.
He suggested 3M's Color-Stable Automotive Window Films CS.
From 3M's Website:
"While most other window film companies buy their polyester from someone else, 3M makes its own polyester in Decatur, Alabama. During this process, 3M patented a technology for producing its own nano-carbon polyester. This revolutionary and unique process, allows for maximum heat rejection without metals, which can interfere with radio and/or satellite signals."
Aaron was able to tint both windows in about 40 minutes... total cost, $105.

I'll post pictures to my gallery asap.

:banghead: Ironic that this post came up. I was thinking about posting because of my frustation for what I see as a silly law, especially after getting ticketed. I have gone about 1 1/2 years with 35% tint. You can see it is different compared to factory, which is the look i was going for because you can still see inside during they day, but obviously darker at night. Here is the link on the laws for each state.

http://www.iwfa.com/iwfa/Law_Chart/State Law Chart.htm

What make things even more difficult is the interpretation of the law (at least for me) Here is what CHP says about the law.

Can I put after-market tinting on the windows of my vehicle?

The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:

The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting.
If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, the vehicle must have outside rearview mirrors on both sides.

The law prohibits any person from driving any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows, with certain limited exceptions.

However, legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays. If, as, or when this material becomes torn, bubbled or otherwise worn, it must be removed or replaced.

But this exerpt from Motor Vehicle code says this.

(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the front seat if the following conditions are met:

(1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88 percent.

(2) The window glazing with the material applied meets all requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205 (49 C.F.R. 571.205), including the specified minimum light transmittance of 70 percent and the abrasion resistance of AS-14 glazing, as specified in that federal standard.

(3) The material is designed and manufactured to enhance the ability of the existing window glass to block the sun's harmful ultraviolet A rays.

(4) The driver has in his or her possession, or within the vehicle, a certificate signed by the installing company certifying that the windows with the material installed meet the requirements of this subdivision and identifies the installing company and the material's manufacturer by full name and street address, or, if the material was installed by the vehicle owner, a certificate signed by the material's manufacturer certifying that the windows with the material installed according to manufacturer's instructions meets the requirements of this subdivision and identifies the material's manufacturer by full name and street address.

(5) If the material described in this subdivision tears or bubbles, or is otherwise worn to prohibit clear vision, it shall be removed or replaced.

:soapbox:
So does this mean if I have Tint film that meets the Federal standards it is legal? If so how come police are under the impression it is just plan NO! Does this also mean that if you install side windows that are pre-tinted according to Federal Standards that it is legal? If your lucky your state isn't as complicated...or country for that matter. I figured at one time this law was created to help police officers deal with criminals who are armed behind these tinted windows, but now that I look at the law it just seems like they want to regulate our life. If we can see out, and you can see in with a Bright light shined inside why can't it be legal? If this is needed to protect police couldnt this apply to other things? Like houses? (Blinds must stay open just incase you are armed so the police can see you??) If it is for our safety then so many other things like wearing shades, place aftermarket shades on the windows, or even removable film, cellular phones should all be regulated too. :3:

This is just how I feel
Nice explanation of CA law is here - in case anyone would be interested even in 2015..
But I got 2 tickets already in CA (San Diego/LA), but I´m super-illegal with my 25%.. but legal limit 88% for CA is just non-sense, I´m sorry..
BTW I got 2 tickets already

It boils down to a simple set of decisions:

1) Check state law before installing anything. Don't go counter to state law.
2) If you commute between states, check laws in both/all states. Conform to all state laws.
3) Don't put film on the windshield or front side windows. It is unsafe.
4) Remember that any film you put on a window reduces your vision outside, just as it reduces the ability of sun to perpetrate and others to see in.
5) The more you reduce your ability to see out, the less safe you are.

2G had these numbers. I suspect 3G would also have similar.

I ended up getting 35% on the front two doors. It is slightly lighter than the rears. I wanted it this way as even with 35%, during winters(snow/evening) I get reduced visibility and have to concentrate hard when making turns that I don't run over a pedestrian :p
