Mysterious Power Liftgate Button

22496 Views 19 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  MuranoSL2003
On a 2017.5 SL, I just noticed a small button to the right of the rectangular button (on the liftgate) that activates the power liftgate. It appears to be the same button as the lock/unlock button on the door handle, but I can't determine what it does. It makes the car beep, but as far as I can tell the lock status just remains the same as before pressing the mystery button (and I tried pressing it twice and same thing). Owner's manual shows it in drawing, but doesn't say anything about it.\

Any insights appreciated,
J.

When locked, a single push turns the lights on (one beep). The 2nd push opens all doors (one beep). The 3rd push, closes all doors (two beeps). At least that's how it works on my 2017.5

Thanks for the info. One follow-up: does the liftgate automatically lock itself when it closes using the rear button (i.e., button on bottom of liftgate)? I've been using the procedure of locking the doors with the manual button inside the door handle while the liftgate opens (through pressing the inside of the cabin button), then just closing the liftgate and calling it a day. But I wonder if I need to press the "lock" button to activate some extra level of lockedness / security (?)
I guess no one reads the owner's manual anymore.

I'm sure you do and I'm sure this is why your comments are so helpful.

I don't think it locks. When you open the lift gate with the car locked, it will remain locked during and after you close it. If the car was opened to beging with it will stay that way while using the lift gate.

You know, I just tested this very carefully and I think it does lock. Pressing the interior lock buttons after the liftgate is open and then returning the smart-key to my house after I close the liftgate, the liftgate stays shut. But if I don't press the internal door lock buttons, and go through the same routine, it is possible to re-open the liftgate without the smart-key.
On my 2015 and 2016, that button works the exact same way as the the lock/unlock buttons on the outside front door handles. I use it all the time to lock the vehicle after everyone gets out. I'm almost always the first one out, so I go to the rear and wait for everyone else to get out and I press that button to lock the car.

bwebb6322, my 2015 Platinum works EXACTLY as you describe

So, if you recall in the earlier post, it was stated that it isn't mentioned in the owners manual. So..why not help instead of being negative??
Thanks!!! :D:D:D:D:D:rolleyes:

some people just love to be dicks about stuff.

I noticed this too about my 2016 SV I bought last week and it's a great question and I wondered the same.

I just bought a 2016 Nissan Rogue SV and the first thing I did was look through the manual and had the same issue with pictures of it but no explanation of it's use. Thank you so much everyone who was thinking progressively to help each other out. I appreciate the effort ❣

I owned my 2016 Murano SL for a whole year before discovering the lock button on the hatch. And I have read the manual cover to cover many times, specifically to set the door locks to my liking
I guess no one reads the owner's manual anymore.
And others don't bother to read the post and/or thread that they are replying to, either...

They simply add more character to this forum. I approve.........
It was 6 months before I discovered that button on my 2018 SV!
Has anyone figured out what the small button is for? I just realized today that there are two buttons on my 2020 Nissan Rogue power liftgate, and have no idea what the small button is for.
I believe the other one operates the locks... If I am correct, you should hear the lock solenoids click when you press it.
Well I have pos 2010 model and the button doesn't do anything. No matter how u press it. Backup cam is there but it doesn't work either
This is a 3rd gen forum...
