i'm sure this has been asked already, but can the original stock radio be replaced with the bose system? i have never heard the bose system but was told it sounded really nice. i just bought an 04 SL but want better sound. i like the fact that the bose comes with a tape deck, that way i can use a cassette adapter to play music on my ipod. is there a better alternative? any info would be very much appreciated. thanks

Wow that doesn't get asked that often :). Typically people dislike the Bose setups. The common comment is if it has no highs and has no lows then it must be blose :D. Although I find the bose sufficient for my needs. Try a search on speaker and amp upgrades or non bose, several have upgraded their base stereo systems.

Also if your going to be making these kinds of mods consider buying the SM see this thread:

I'm about to get rid of my Bose system and upgrade to a non-bose system. I'll be keeping the stock head unit, but getting rid of the speakers, sub, and amp.

For me, the lack of base was what is driving me to do the upgrade. I'd suggest going to an aftermarket system as opposed to updateing to the Bose system, but that's just me :)

The difficulty of upgrading from Base to Bose is about the same as installing an aftermarket amp and speakers, and it is very hard to find the Bose headunit as people who had upgraded their Bose system would need to keep the headunit for climate control. And the front speakers are of different size. (Oval for Base and round for Bose.) An average aftermarket amp and speakers will beat Bose on any day, so just go get an Amp and new speakers. Hire some pro to do it for you as it took me 5 days to figure out how to mount my amp and run the wires around inside the vehicle. It ain't easy.
