Hmmmm.. after looking at the technical specs on the CVT, I can see a lot of opertunity for a performance chip.. with a "computer" controlling the distance between the two pullies, any "gear" can be similated, and in fact , I suspect, any ratio in between...

With this in mind.. how about a chip that keep keeps the RPM between 5500 and 6750, by "stepping" up the ratio small increments.. This would keep the engine in the peak range for HP.... :twisted:

That would be amazing...

If you floor it, doesn't it it do that anyways? I was reading the febuary issue of car and driver and they got a 7.5 for the 0-60 out of it. Unfortunatly, they got a 7.8 for the 5-60mph. Im guessing a chip could improve that, but I dont know much about the over all improvment.

I would also guess that keeping it between 5500 rpms and 6750 rpms would do nothing more than suck fuel. The peak HP/Torque is probably lower than that.

I do think though that there should be a lot of potential with a performance chip for this car. Hopefully, someone will develop one. I emailed a company that specializes in other Nissan products (I forget the name) to see if they would consider developing a chip for the Murano but have yet to hear from them.

Here's the info from edmunds:

Horsepower: 245 hp Max Horsepower: 5800 rpm
Torque: 246 ft-lbs. Max Torque: 4400 rpm

Nissan performance company... Nismo, stillen?

It's jimwolftechnology.com. Doing a search for Nissan ECU upgrades seems to point to them as being the primary Nissan company.

I guess I didn't think much about the rpms because when you floor it, it barely goes above 4000rpms.

Also, if you do a search for Nismo ECU you'll see reference to Jim Wolf Technology in the Nismo project cars. Stillen does not make ECUs either. I guess I could try calling JWT since they don't seem to keen on answering email.

hey taylor

do you know what the "s" stands for (when shifting from "d"-drive to "s")? i know when i took it for a test drive i forgot to ask and i'm sure he wouldn't know but, while i was on the freeway doing 70, he shifted it to the right (just to the right-but not down to "s") and the rpms shot up to about 4500 and needless to say, it took off. it was obviously some kind of overdive selection (what he did) but, just curious. we didn't try "s" (forgot to). so, do you know what the "s" stands for? does the manual say?

"S" mode, MPG and 1st Sevice oil type.

I think the S is exactly that- the Sport mode. Meanwhile we have 2700 miles on ours and mpg is still around 19.5 Anybody getting over 20mpg in their 4WD model? And is everybody going to switch to pure synthetic oil at the 3750 mile service? PS. Our windshield washer stopped working and thought motor was bad. Dealer said he would look at it. Then we had the bright idea of checking the tank. It was empty! :oops: It goes down pretty fast if you take a trip in the snow.

Yes, the S is for sport mode, but it holds the rpms higher at all times. I don't really care for it. The 325i we have has a sport mode that I use at all times and it only holds the rpms higher as needed.

I'm not sure why they didn't design the CVT S mode to do the same thing. Drive around at 40mph at 3500 rpms and you'll see how annoying it is. I've used it a couple of times to enter an interstate. I guess the thought behind it is to alleviate the lag that you get in normal drive mode when you step on the gas.

how did the sport mode do when entering the interstate?

and i thought that the higher the rpms the closer you get to the maximum hp. i could be wrong so correct me if i am.

Sport mode is good when you need the accelleration. If you are driving constantly at 40 mph, you dont want the rpm's at 3500 (unless you want to cough up a lot of $$$ for gas).

According to the manual the "S" is "second" not Sport.. but I have noticed that it doesn't act like a normal "second" but will in fact act like it has two "gears".. when I tried it the other day it "dropped" the rpm a lot when the car was slower.. if it truly was a "second" the RPM's should be proportional to the RPM (and not change) ..

a second thing I noticed was when I left it in "S" and tried to redline it.. it changed the gear ratio. (I stead of locking it , and stopping the engine from over reving (like a traditional car)

hmm.. I would agree that it acts like a "sport" but the manual says "second"

interesting darryl...how did it perform while in "second"? did it give a quicker acceleration?

It may give quicker acceleration just for the fact that the rpms are already higher so perhaps it's quicker to reach max hp and torque. No different than in a manual transmission and you downshift for increased rpms to pass or speed up.

this is what i'm wondering...IF the rpms can reach the point where it is needed to receive maximum hp (245hp @5800rpms). it seems like nobody here on this site has made it up to 5800rpms (which is said where 245hp is given). i know there is way, i'm just wondering if anyone has gotten that high in rpms without changing the chip.

i guess it doesn't matter cuz i'm going to get the murano anyway!!! :lol:

I've gotten it up there. in the "D" mode.. all I did was (at a slow speed) put the pettle to the metel..

it's kept it up there for a while (at about 6000 rpm ) for about 20 seconds..
it took a while to get up from the running start, but it got there..

Use of "S" - What the Manual Says

If I recall correctly the manual says the only time that "S" should be used is when going down a a grade...

I'll quote from the manual:

S (Second) position:

Use this position for the improved engine braking.

L (Low) position:

Use this position for maximum engine breaking on steep downhill gradients/climbing steep slopes and whenever approaching sharp bends. Do not use the L position in any other circumstances.


So, there is no such restriction for S csbey.
