who here wishes onstar sold replacement mirrors with all the onstar technology built-in to the mirror? I'd take that. Especially since we already have power running to our mirrors. For location-based services, I know they need cellular and gps (which can be self-contained inside the mirror, with a through-the-glass cell antenna on the windshield), but in order to interact with the engine and locks, there would have to be a module connected to a system bus, perhaps linked to the onstar mirror by a wireless datalink. Not all that difficult, IMHO. In fact, when buying the Murano, I kinda assumed that Nissan had a service to compete with Onstar - I figured all automakers did for their high-end vehicles.
Couldn't be more wrong.
Heck, at this point, now that cellphone companies are integrating GPS into their phones and networks, I suspect we'll see cellular carriers putting out their own Onstar-like mirrors with location-based or concierge or e911 services. If you're familiar with Infone (the phone-based concierge specialists) even THEY could release such a product.
