Hello! New member here. My wife owns a 2015 Murano Platinum AWD w/ 25000 miles. Recently we took it to the dealership for regular maintenance and winter tire swap-out. Dealer informed my wife that the front and rear brake pads were low (3mm and 4mm respectively). That part seemed like a normal recommendation. First brake pad replacement for the car.

However they also told her that all four rotors needed to be replaced. I didn't get info on what they measured but the service paperwork only mentions "lots of rust" for the front driver side rotor. Needless to say I'm taking it in for a second opinion. They don't seem that worn on my look but I don't have a micrometer to measure them.

No shimmy or shake during braking. Everything else on the car is fine. I've never heard of rotors going this fast but I don't have experience with Nissans. Anyone have experience with 3rd Gen Muranos burning through rotors this fast or was the service guy trying to take my wife for a ride?

I have 42000km on my 2017 and notice a vibration when braking. Not sure if its normal for rotors to warp by that mileage. I think my precious cars lasted me at least 60,000km before any type of vibration. Maybe Nissan rotors aren't that great? Not sure...

My (1997 & 2004) maximas' OEM rotors got warped around every 40Kmiles, forcing me to have the rotors re-surfaced (along with pad replacements). Our 2007 Murano never had vibrations & had (rotors lathed & pad replacements) around 50-60Kmiles.
My trusty mechanic only recommended rotor-replacements after 2x cuts.
Since I decide to do brakes myself now, I probably will replace the rotors if they're warped.
I don't think rotors would need replacement (due to wear) @25Kmiles.

My friend with a BMW X5 had his (Rotors+Brakes package) replaced @60Kmiles ... for a cool $2000. But that is a BMW requirement.

I would definitely get a second opinion before doing any brake work. I changed the rear pads on my '11 LE several months ago at 106 ,000 miles and they still had a little life still in them. I haven't changed the fronts yet now at 115,000 miles but may do soon as I have the pads and the weather has warmed up. No issues with the rotors at all. I got over 100,000 miles out of the pads on my '09 Maxima and no problems with the rotors on that vehicle also.

Sounds like the dealer is trying to make a little (or lot) of money off you.

Yeah. I can't imagine any rotors going bad at 25k miles (much less all four) unless you are riding the brakes exceptionally hard. My wife does use her brakes a little bit too much but not dramatically so.

The service sheet didn't give measurements (it obviously did for the brake pads) so I'm guessing they are only justifying it based on rust. Deserves a second opinion.

Thanks for the feedback folks! I'll let you know how it turns out.

If rotors are warped in a car with hydraulic brakes, you will feel the brake pedal go up and down slightly when pressing on it.

Warping is not related to mileage at all, it's related to driving conditions and habits.

Rust is irrelevant to rotor wear. All rotors rust. What matters is the thickness of the rotor measured with a micrometer. When the rotor is work to the minimum thickness, it must be replaced to prevent overheating and warping.

Find an honest shop and have them explain exactly what's going on. You're either not getting an accurate story or you don't understand what you're being told.

New Brakes @ 25K ?

I have the exact same car except SL. At 45 K when I went for my oil change I had 7mm all around. Went back to the same dealership @ 50 K and the said 4mm on the back and suggested new pads and rotters. I unfortunately said just do it. Latter I found out that they used after market rotters and to boot that dealership went out of business soon after that. Because I have 60K maintainence plan when I bought the care I went to the new dealership that took over at just short of 60K for my last service. They said that I now have 4mm on the front. Knowing that I was putting new tires on for the winter in a week or so I said hold off to next time. My tire guy who I have been buying tires from for over 35 years checked ans said I had 6mm. HUM

Bottom line is get a second opinion from a trusted mechanic. 25K is way too early and stay away from the dealers if at all possible.

Took my wife Mo 2015 with 47K miles for burning oil smell to a dealer.
Dealer told me all pads are 3mm and need all new. With quote 380$ front and 380$ back plus 200$ if I like new rotors. Told the no.

Bought frond and rear pads high end for about 80$
When I pulled front pads out they were almost as new maybe 2mm sorter but way more than 3mm as dealer indicated.
Rears were about 3-4mm so dealer was right on the rears.

As many suggested, second opinion is the must unless you can check it by yourself.

I just had my 2015 Murano SL Fwd in for an oil change last Saturday. I have 47,000 miles on it. They said my brakes have 3-4 mm left on them which means they will need to be replaced “soon”. They didn’t say anything negative about the rotors except they need to be resurfaced? (I think) Still safe to drive. I don’t have any problems. Will be listening for the squeak sound that comes when brakes are getting close to replacement.

I would definitely get a second opinion, especially at 25,000 miles! Plus, you haven’t had any problems or symptoms of brake/rotor wear. Let us know what you find out!

This discussion really makes me concerned about upcoming repairs on our 18. We previously had two Ford Edges. We traded them in at 125,000 and 110,000 and never did any brake repair to either. Always had service done at the dealer and both vehicles had decent brakes at trade in. Sounds like our new Murano will be needing brakes at 1/2 that mileage. Is the brake quality really that poor?

It's not brake quality, it's how they are designed. Some pads wear faster, some slower. Some that wear faster have superior braking characteristics, but it's really not something any of us can test ourselves.

If you get 125K out of pads, you're doing a lot of highway driving. It means you're not using the brakes nearly as much as the average driver, so good for you. It may also be that the OEM pads were a much harder compound, which would extend brake life, although it may also mean that you don't stop quite as fast.

Brakes are consumable. They are designed to wear out. If you know much about car maintenance, they are one of the easier and less expensive repairs to do yourself. They are also not understood well by those who don't work on cars. On my BMW 3-series, I buy brake kits from Bavauto and pay about $200 an axle for brakes and rotors. Changing them in the driveway is about a 3 hour job if I'm not in a hurry, so I can do the whole car for $400, although front and rear normally wear out at different rates.

In the Murano, the rear pads and rotors typically wear out first. This is different from most cars, since weight transfers forward during braking and therefore front brakes normally do more of the work - therefore, they wear out faster.

It's not that hard to check the pad thickness on most cars (I do it while rotating tires so I have a clear view) by getting it up in the air, removing the wheel and sighting along the edge of the rotor. I have a small MM pocket rule that I can hold up and sight down toward the pads. New pads on many cars are 8-10 MM thick, so if you see about 4 MM thickness (check inner and outer pads, they may be wearing at different rates) you know that you're at about 50% pad thickness. You want to change around 2 MM (25% thickness) because as pads get thinner, they have less mass and therefore become more susceptible to heat fade under heavy braking.

It's not unusual for people to give you bad info about pad thickness. I've been told 2MM left and checked it at home, finding 4MM. I think some shops figure that you may not be in there again before the pads go too thin, so they try to get you to change a bit early in the interest of safety. Still, tell me the truth!

Rotor size

Rotors are relatively inexpensive. I always have them replaced rather than trying to turn down the old ones. If the originals warped, shaving metal off of them is going to make it that much sooner that they warp. Put on a new set and be done with it.
Do you know what the size of the rotors are for a 15 SL? The center diameter I mean. AutoZone has a 165mm and a 200mm? Also not sure what is a good brand to go with, if I go the rockauto route. Thank in advance!

I have always used Raybestos rotors and brake pads. I bye the thickest ones which are
Less likely to warp and can be cut if needed. I know Pep Boys sell them.

I’ve got a 2007 Murano with 61,000 miles or roughly 100,000 kilometers with original brakes and rotors with no vibration issues. Just getting ready to put new brakes on. Warped rotors are caused by overheating. Do you tow anything or do a lot of mountain driving? Riding the brakes can cause overheating as well as a defective caliper that doesn’t release properly when you let off the brakes. Definitely not normal for them to warp.
