Hey all, first time on the forums here. I Have experienced this problem where I will be driving and after about 20-30 minutes at highway speeds (65-70mph) the transmission starts to rev pretty high. I'm talking at 70mph it'll hit close to 5K rpm, on a flat road. The engine will also start to make a whining sound. I will get off the freeway, park the car, shut it off and then get back in about 10-15 minutes later and it'll be good to go again, but sometimes it'll do it again and others it won't. It doesn't do this every day, usually happens at completely random times. I read somewhere that this could be a stepper motor so i took it to my mechanic and the stepper motor code came up. Where do I get a stepper motor for this car, and where would I get it put in at? Oh ya forgot to mention, the Dealer insists that I replace the gearbox...which conveniently costs ALOT more for me.

Welcome to the forum!

What year is your MO and how many miles are on the clock?

Nissan considers the CVT to be a non-serviceable component instead of a repairable assembly. In other words, Nissan expects you to pay $6,000 to replace the CVT when there is a problem. It is a ridiculous policy and one that they have been reluctant to change.

Just recently a forum member reported he went to an AAMCO transmission center for CVT replacement. They installed a rebuilt CVT. You might want to give them a call and see if they can obtain and install the stepper motor.

Let us know how it goes.

Good luck.

I knew I'd forget some essentials; its an '03 and has 90K+. Thats basically what they're trying to do to me, but the car is worth 8-10K so theres no way i'm paying 6K for repair. I read on the G20.net forums about people having the similar problem. One guy took it into a gearbox specialist who fixed it for him. Just wondering iff anyone knows anything else about getting it fixed other than replacing the cvt.

I may be wrong, but I thought the G20 only came with a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 4-speed automatic.

I'm not sure about the G20 but the guys were talking about the same exact problem, one guy's got stuck in 1st gear occassionally.

You're comparing apples to oranges.

Having a conventional auto-tranny stuck in first gear is totally different from a CVT that abruptly changes ratios.

However, since your mechanic found an error code indicating the stepper motor is bad I would still look to AAMCO for the part.

Did you replace the stepper motor?
Did that fix the issue?
I have a 2006 Murano with the same issue of staying in low gears so having high rpm on the highway.

I have a 2005 nissan murano and it will go rev high shifts slow when you let off the throttle lightly and shudders sometimes but only has 164k in miles, do I need to have it rebuilt or can I just change the valve body?

Has the CVT fluid ever been replaced? If not, maybe start with a drain and fill. Also consider changing the CVT filters.

Scan for CVT error codes with the Android app CVTz50, and post any errors found here.
