I have been in the market for a 2004 Murano with all options including NAV. These are hard to come by and the ones I find are really expensive. I have been shopping for a month with no luck. I finally ran into this:

2004 SE Black/Black, AWD - Touring Package(inlcudes heated/memory leather 10 way power seats, sunroof, HID), Dynamic Package(VDC, TCS), Navigation, 21,000 miles

The only thing it doesn't have is DVD entertainment so this thing pretty much loaded.

Price listed was $26,700

I was very excited and then I went and looked at it. The exterior was in good shape....some scratches here and there but it's to be expected.

The interior was an issue. The rear hatch area was all scratched up. It was a trade in from a woman with three kids. They said she upgraded to a bigger suv. The back was apparently filled with junk. The rear seats have a few blemishes on them as well....prob from the kids.

The front driver and passenger area is in good shape and dash is good too.

If I am to buy this, I want the back fixed up...possibly new panels back there. Another thing is the leather in the rear possibly fixed up or made a little better by some leather specialist.

What do you guys think. The miles and options are spectacular. The interior is good up front but needs some work in the back. I priced out to fix the panels and it's about $250 labor and $450-$500 parts. The car would prob be about $27k after fixing.

I am getting this car mechanically inspected at a nissan dealer. I think mechanically, everything is good. It drives like new. Let's see if they find anything.

Should I do it? Or try to find another one with all the options for about $30k or more? They're pretty hard to find and I am tired of searching. At the same time I want a nice car (nearly perfect).

I forgot to mention that I talked the dealer down to $26,000. So I am assuming maybe $1,000 to replace panels, fix up leather in rear seats(it's not that bad, just two small spots).

I'd tell them you're very serious in the vehicle and exactly what your concerns are. If they can replace the damaged parts to your satisfaction, or drop the price by the cost of those parts, you have a deal.

If the damage is not a big deal and you could live with repairing it yourself, then you have a decision to make, if they aren't willing to budge. Or split the difference.

If you want to continue the search, thank them for their time.

Given the alternator and steering upgrades, it would be nice to find an '05 with what you want.

I really like Grips MO. I really need AWD though.
Need is such a relative term!

If MO's AWD was a real AWD, then I would have agreed. But let's face it, this AWD is only good to 6 mph, and even then the transaxle is not locked so if you have one wheel spinning in the front and one in the back, you are not going anywhere!

The manual AWD is only good up to 6 MPH but the system can slip it in AWD at any speed. However I do agree it isn't the best AWD in the world and had I known that I would have gotten a MO with FWD....

Buy Grips... it will be like getting new and you don't have start with replacing things such as the leather or back panels (or adding things since he added almost everything they make). It's a very small sacrifice getting the FWD over the AWD. I wish I didn't buy my AWD Murano in March and had waited just a little bit longer to have gotten his. Who knew then though...

No - no! Stick to your guns. Sure, Grip's Murano is really nice, but if it doesn't have the AWD you want, guess which feature you're going to miss (and regret not getting) the most despite whatever other features exist?

As for the AWD, its not limited to 6mph. On the 2004's the AWD lock button will allow both front and rear power up to 19mph. AND, at higher speeds, if there is slippage, the AWD will kick in regardless of speed.

I think the AWD is pretty good on the Murano. I have talked to three MO owners at work here and they all love it. One guys says that it's much better than his 4x4 explorer in the snow. Since this will be driven in PA often, snow is a concern. The 4 wheel lock up to 6mph (18mph on '03-'04) is actually wonderful. When you are stuck you are going 0 mph so I'll take the 18mph AWD lock. Most likely if you are going over 6mph then you are not stuck. If you are slipping going any speed, the AWD WILL kick in no matter what the speed. I think the AWD system basically thinks that above 6mph or 18mph, most likely you dont need to be locked into 4 wheel mode unnecessarily. Once again if it detects that the front wheels are spinning out at lets say for example at 30mph, it will go into 4 wheel mode. I dont see any problem in the way the AWD works. I think it's perfect and definitely usefull where I live. As far as the car sliding, etc in the snow, VDC will take care of that.

I just wish Grips car had the AWD. If I lived somewhere where it doesn't snow, I too would take 2wd. It's more fuel efficient :)

I am starting to think that $26,000 for AWD, NAV, VDC, Touring package and 21,000 miles is pretty good.

I sure will post the pics when I get it. I did have nissan inspect it and they said it is very clean mechanically. I just have to fix up some of the cosmetics in the back caused by the kids and junk that must have been back there all the time. I think I should be able to have it look almost new for $500. We will see :)
