Hi,

My 2017 platinum Murano is about nine months old. Recently, I have been having a problem where a message keeps popping up that says “Unavailable Front Radar Obstruction.” The problem happens while on the highway when either the car switches lanes or I switch lanes while a car is in front of me. The radar system stays off for about 5 minutes, then turns back on, and then does it over and over. It seems like the sensor is working fine (it’s not getting blocked by snow or dirt or anything), but it freaks out when it sees a car in front of me and suddenly disappears, so it just shuts off. I doubt the dealer will help me much with the issue because it seems like a problem with the program rather than the sensor. Does anybody know why it might be doing this or what I can do to fix it? I don’t use the cruise control much, but the constant beeping noise gets annoying.

Thanks

I just bought a used 2018 murano sv & exactly facing the same issue with those radar messages ,which is quite annoying.

I checked with service center yesterday while doing the oil change & they simply said there is no cummnication from Nissan on any radar issue so they have to keep my car to check the issue ,but I thought it's not worth to give my car to service center as many have the same issue & Nissan has not acknowledged this yet.

Thanks

Hi,,, We just bought 2018 and have this same annoying issue. The dealer service staff are telling me that's the way it is (poor service response imo); however, I feel Nissan can and should fix the issues. Having a technology background I could never implement something that works so bad and has no explanation from the manufacturer/developer. I will pursue Nissan as I feel it should work this way:
1) First, allow owners to turn the feature off. Turn ICC (not so intelligent today imo) off but allow cruise control.
2) Do not beep if cruise is not on. It is so annoying and happens far too often, especially if you live in a high traffic area.
3) When it activates it should not go to sleep for the 3-5 minutes it should check for any obstructions every 5-10 seconds and when clear (usually right after it activates in the first place) allow ICC cruise to work again

I encourage all to complain to their dealer, squeaky wheels get the oil :)

Also most welcome your thoughts/ideas on how it should work so if they do take action we get what is best for all.

Thx

1) First, allow owners to turn the feature off. Turn ICC (not so intelligent today imo) off but allow cruise control.
I find myself wondering if an owner couldn't figure out a way to wire the circuit ON (jumper the contacts) so that the system thinks the road is clear. Then the cruise should work. I'm personally more invested in setting my own following distance, so I wouldn't miss the nanny slowing down for me.

It would depend on how many contacts there are on the sensor, etc. Might be a complicated circuit which would make this impractical.

YMMV, etc.

I have owned my 2017 Murano for a year. In the last few months my 'Unavailable Front Radar Obstruction' continually beeps and subsequently turns off my ICC while going down the interstate. I have taken to the dealership twice and both times told it was just super sensitive and they can't do anything about it. Not sure why I pay for premium technology on this vehicle when its a non-functional hindrance. We need a fix and soon!!! Otherwise, I love my car but this is so frustrating!

I bought a used 2015 Platinum 2 weeks ago. While on the test drive I was testing the limits of what the Intelligent cruise would do and after it brought the car to a stop at a traffic light after getting off the interstate the system beeped and the orange warning light appeared. The sales guy and I both thought the system had put us in ‘Time Out’ similar to what a Tesla will do since I didn’t put my foot on the brake after it slowed to a stop. When we got back to the dealership I turned the car off and back on and all was normal again so didn’t think anything of it.

Returned to the dealership the following morning, bought the car and on the way home the AEB warning light came on when I was not using cruise. Came on again the next day as well. Called my salesman and explained the issue. Luckily he remembered it faulting on the test drive and he spoke to the used car sales manager. They are willing to make the car right so I took the car back for them to repair last Monday. It’s a Volvo dealership so they had to send it to a Nissan dealership down the road. They gave me 2019 XC40 to drive while they are having it repaired. Last I heard they were waiting on a replacement radar sensor and it was going to be a few days till they got it.

I looked up the radar sensor for my model. Looks like the original part number 28438-5AA0A was replaced at some point with 28438-5AA0B so that may be a good sign that they have made a correction to the unit itself.

I’m thankful the Volvo dealer is making this right as the car was 16,000 miles beyond the factory warranty when I bought it and just the sensor without labor is $746. Hopefully all is well after its replaced.

I've had this too - it happens every now and then when I'm driving down the same stretch of road that has a concrete median very close on the left side of the lane, so I always just thought that was messing with it for some reason. Just had a trip to Houston this weekend and it started happening randomly every 15-30 minutes for a little while, then worked fine. I don't use ICC much, and all of the errors happened when I was just driving normally. At this point, nothing I'm willing to bother with going to the dealership yet, but I'll keep an eye on this thread to see what solutions y'all find.

Got my car back this morning. The Nissan dealer replaced both the radar sensor and the bracket. There was also a notation that they repaired the harness. They charged the Volvo dealership $1,045! Very glad they took care of it. They will be getting an excellent survey for sure. Drove around for a while before going home, the error light did not return.

I will contact my Toyota dealership I bought this from and see what they can do.

I wonder why they still charge Volvo if your Murano is still under warranty

It sucks getting this notification every 15min and I don't think my front radar brake assist works very well

Good luck getting the parts. That was what got damaged in my collision with a smallish deer. It's been in the shop 12 weeks waiting for the adaptive cruise radar sensor. It came in last friday, after 12 weeks, and the car is finally put back together.

There is a huge back-order of that part. Mine actually got moved to the front of the waiting list because of the insurance claim, and it still took 12 weeks.

Unavailable Front Radar Obstruction

Hi,

I just bought a Murano 2018 by trading-in my 2015 and got the same alert and the major problem is it doesn't let set the Cruise which is very annoying. I owned Murano 2015 more than 2years but never faced this issue. Nissan should fix this feature which they advertise them a lot to sell the premium versions. There is no point spending more and get the higher end version without these features working. I hope Nissan will fix this problem soon.

Thanks

12 weeks is a long time. I live within 20 miles of a Nissan plant and I can’t get the part either. That is one of the reasons I bought the car and have to wait that long is ridiculous. I think they should take it off of some of the other cars in their lots or the plant. We have already purchased the cars. Yet we are being penalized.

Most likely the radar unit is not made in a Nissan assembly plant, but rather by some far away supplier. The supply chain is set up to be “just in time” so the manufacturers don’t have lots of excess inventory lyng around. Most of the supply is dedicated to new vehicle production, so when there is an abnormal spike in demand, you get the six week wait time Halwg experienced.

The same thing is happening to me with the front radar sensor and the repair costs me $ 1820. Additionally I have a problem with the brakes, sometimes it doesn't brake and the pedal feels strange. This error is cleared when the car is turned off and turned on. Some of you have happened for the same thing? My car is a 2016 Nissan Murano but my warranty expired for miles. I’m scared for the expensive bill.

Front radar obstruction

my 2017 Murano is also experiencing the front radar obstruction problem. what's scary is that when it happens it disables the cruise control. was on the highway last weekend passing another vehicle at 75 mph and it did it and disabled the cruise. A bit startling and dangerous. Dealer says Nissan is "engineering" the problem and a fix is not available. Called customer service today at Nissan and filed a case on it. They don't seem to be concerned about it, but I want it fixed! Anyone else have this issue and get if fixed? Dealer says all the 2018's are experiencing it. If that's true, then Nissan surely will do something about it.

That is too bad. We really need to know why the units are failing because they obviously work when the cars are new. Is it heat, cold, vibration, road debris impact, faulty wiring in the sensor, a bad chip, water infilittration...the list is possibly very long. Something is happening that is causing outright or intermittent failure and this should be identifiable and fixable. Very frustrating to have happen to a brand new vehicle. Just make sure everyone call Nissan to complain as well as bring to dealer.

I too am having the same issue. I bought my first ever Brand new vehicle. A 2018 Nissan Murano Platinum. OO boy I thought new car no issues. Boy was I wrong !! Issues started right from day one with seats not warming up or cooling. Then I was locked out. ( thats a whole other issue) Then the Navigation screen went black. My car only has 8000 km. All I get is a bunch of BS from the dealership and Nissan. Very disappointed in customer service that Nissan offers. I should've stuck with Chev/GM. OOO and no timeline on when the part will be here to fix cruise/ breaking system. Nice thanks for nothing. !!!

Were they able to fix the heating and cooling of the seats? If so what was involved in the fix. Our front seats are very slow to heat up and it only feels like the lumbar is heating, seat bottom appears to stay the same. Rear seats work really well but since it's only my mother-in-law that drives from back there......it doesn't help me. This is our first Nissan too, we have a 2003 Monte Carlo that runs like a charm and a 2005 Blazer that is aging but still runs...most of the time ;). Was thinking of the Sorento, maybe should have gone that way and got some towing power which the Murano does not have.

My 2018 does exactly the same thing. This vehicle only has 4500 km on it and it has been a problem from day 1. It is not only annoying but it is a safety concern when operating the vehicle at high speed and in tight traffic as the vehicle slows when the CC kicks off without any break lights to warn the car following you that you are slowing down. This problem appears to be wide spread so Nissan needs to step up and address this issue as any reputable car manufacturer should.

Hi all,
So I have a 2018 Nissan Sentra SR. The night I drove it off the lot, I got a front radar obstruction warning on my dash. I called the dealership the next day and brought my car back in. I was told by the service dept that there was a problem with the sensor and Nissan was working to fix the problem. But I had to wait for a new sensor to come in. I've dealt with the beeping for weeks, (it goes off roughly 7-8 times a day) and I finally received a call that the new part was in and to bring my car in to have the sensor replaced. I dropped my car off and the next day they call and tell me it's ready to be picked up. I go get my car and not even 5 miles from the dealership, the sensor goes off AGAIN! I take a picture of the warning and immediately call the service department. He tells me to give it a few days to hopefully reset itself and in the meantime, he is going to look into what else could be causing the sensor to malfunction. He is suppose to call me Friday. As of today, the sensor has malfunction at least 10 times since I picked up my car. Sometimes it goes off when there is nothing in front of me at all. I'm at my whits end with this. I am on my 3rd vehicle from Nissan since July 31 due to problems with the cars. I have been documenting each warning with pictures so I have the proof. What else could be going wrong with the car? It's brand new! 45 miles on it when I purchased it. PLEASE HELP!!

Just picked up our new 18 Murano in mid September in Alberta and drove it back to Manitoba. No issues with the radar unit on the 1200 km trip (it slowed the car to the vehicle speed ahead ok while in cruise) but I'm now concerned about the unit getting smacked by road debris and disabling the cruise and EBS after reading others comments. So wondering if anyone has tried covering the unit with something to protect it. I know the manual mentions possible malfunctions if covering it with opaque or transparent coverings. I had some plexiglass handy so cut a piece to fit over the radar unit and fastened to the plastic grill overtop with screws and rubber washers. Tried it out yesterday and no issues with the cruise but true test will come for the EBS if needed. Will try it out with traffic ahead to see if it adjusts speed accordingly. Comments?

Less than a year later and the cruise is kicking off constantly just like everyone else's on the 18's. Traffic or no traffic, rain, snow, or clear it has a mind of it's own and shuts down at random. The plastic covering I made at least kept the sensor from getting beaten up and DID NOT affect the operation of the cruise. I was able to verify this when I took the cover off on an extended trip and the cruise still failed just as frequently. Granted it does reset in 5 - 10 minutes while driving or if the engine is shut off and restarted but this is not what I paid for. If someone actually gets theirs fixed permanently please post. Thanks.

10/18/2018: Got call from dealer yesterday advising me to bring my car in for a software update which would take 3 hours. So I took it in this morning expecting a three hour wait. After about 45 minutes the service advisor came and told me the fix didn't work! So this is still an issue. Asked him what the next step would be. Said he would get with Nissan to see. Checking my States Lemon Law to see how many times I have to bring it in before the Lemon Law applies. Doesn't seem to me like Nissan is doing much of anything to resolve this.

A clear shield sounds good, but I am concerned about what happens when it gets clouded from road debris over time and gets less transparent. Might be cheap to make multiple plexiglass covers from a large sheet and then swap out every 10k or so. Would want to know how to reliably attach so that it stays in place and can be swapped out easily. Keep us posted and post some pics. :)

I took my '18 Murano Platinum AWD into dealership on Thursday, they tried to turn me away saying that there was nothing that can be done, but Nissan knows about the issue but they are not currently communicating with any dealership about the issue.

The reason I took the Murano in was at the request of my regional Nissan Consumer Affairs rep. About after an hour or so at the dealership they said that there was an error code for the sensor and the shop foreman talked with Nissan and they said that the code was not considered a considerable error and to do nothing.

I do not buy this excuse since when the error is active it renders the ICC and Forward braking inoperable. This also renders the Cruise control inoperable since it cannot use the ICC to tell how close you are to the car in front of you.

Just a word of warning, I was on a road trip this past weekend while using the Cruise control the front sensor error out, this caused the cruise control to stop working and applied the brakes to slow the car down, almost causing a accident. This happened to me and my wife both on separate times. I am talking to Nissan about the safety issue as I no longer feel safe with my family in the car if something like this happens again

I am asking Nissan to either fix the issue or buy it back at full price under the Lemon Law and I will go get something else other than Nissan

My 2018 is 7 months old and I have never had this issue. I just returned from a 4000+ road trip and the cruise control ran perfectly. Took a little getting used to because at first I didn’t trust it, but got used to it over time.

Last weekend we did have a wet sloppy snow and I did get a warning it was blocked/disabled. Stopped to eat and in the 30 minutes I was stopped the snow melted off and I didn’t get the warning again.

I have the same problem with my 2017.5 Murano. The beep and the sensor icon seem completely random. I've tried to keep track of weather, traffic, cars cutting in and out in front of me...can find absolutely no consistence. The beep sounded and the icon came on one time at a red light! The sensor has been replaced once already, but my insurance company paid for it because of a very minor front end collision. Within the past few months, I have had the same symptoms as all other posts at this site. I had a discussion with the dealer, my service advisor, the service manager, the mechanic who diagnosed the sensor's problems. Initially the dealer said "Sorry, the sensor is bad but not covered by warranty.' My cost to replace the sensor, though its problems were no fault of mine, was $1,600! Any way, after discussions with the Nissan people, and my insurance company, Nissan told me they would replace the sensor at no cost to me. Great news of course, but what happens in six months when it goes out again? My insurance company approved the claim as an "exception"...something normally not covered. Good of them, but while they were discussing the claim and its ultimate resolution, Nissan did the right thing and agreed to replace the sensor. However, there will be at least a 3 week delay until the part comes in. I experienced the same delay the last time the part was replaced. Aren't many of us asking...why the delay? Are there so many of their customers crying "foul" at this situation? Many non-answer by Nissan, but I still have to admire their ultimate decision to cover the sensor.
