updated: any have a failure in the AWD control unit?

the part number is:

AWD Control Unit 41650 CB020

the reason i ask is (after a tow) my AWD was always locked (the switch light was not on and the dash light was not on)

i fixed it temporarily by disconnecting the connector at the AWD clutch.

i can test the switch itself to see if it is shorted, and the other possibility is this control unit.

i also will test the connector at the AWD clutch to see if it is always getting signal despite the cockpit switch being off (thats my guess)

wondering if this a common failure so i have some clues where to look. thanks,

I have another thought. Maybe it's the AWD clutch itself.

You can check that by raising the rear of the MO with the ignition off, transmission in neutral and turning the rear wheels by hand. If the driveshaft turns then the AWD clutch is locked. If not, then it may be the AWD Control Unit.

PopsCA-

Check out the AWD schematic from the 2005 service manual.

The part number has been superceded by 41650CC40A and can be bought on-line for $418.

Thanks Joe!!!! Looks like I need to read up in the Service Manuals. I think that might look a bit different than the 2005 Armada Schematics, it's been awhile since I've seen it. I just know that BCM reflashes have fixed major ABS and ABLS problems on some Armadas and Titans but I don't recall how the schematics are laid out.

njjoe,

i dont think it is the clutch itself because, as i mentioned, when i disconnected the electrical signal to the clutch, the AWD was no longer locked.

i could fix it by wiring up a new switch directly to the clutch connector. that would let me keep the lock on at all speeds (and require that one remembers to shut it off!)

james

ps thanks for the diagram and new part number!

pps- if the awd control unit was a common failure, and it wasnt noticed by the driver, a lot of stress would be put on the transfer case. i am starting to think this might be a significant cause of failures.

i hooked up the replacement awd control unit and the rear diff connector and everything is back to normal.

i have no idea why the unit failed, but there was no dash light to indicate. only if you were sensitive to the slight binding during u-turns would you notice

if you failed to notice, huge strain would be placed on the drivetrain. i speculate that this is one possible reason for premature transfer/cvt failure.

btw the mounting bolts for the control unit are not easy to reach up under the dash, and i am usually pretty good at getting at stuff like this. any tips for replacing are appreciated.

its very easy to drop your only 10mm wrench down inside the frame doing this too :p

you could access it from the top but only if the windshield is out.
