I have a 2007 Murano.

Yesterday morning I noticed a crack about 5 inches long on the driver side. So I call my insurance company (GEICO) and they set an appointment with Safelite Autoglass and they repaired the crack that afternoon. Insurance covered the cost of the repair ($60) but they won't cover replacement. He said the crack got bigger as he drove it to the garage but he said it shouldn't get any bigger.

Well, today after work I'm driving home and I noticed it getting larger. It's now over a foot long. It was raining all last night and throughout today, so I'm guessing that might have something to do with it.

Anyway, I have to get it replaced now, and the quote is $400 including tax, parts, labor and molding.

My deductible is higher than that so I'm coming out of pocket. The appointment is Friday afternoon. Have any of you had your windshield replaced? Do you all think this is a fair price? Safelite has a lifetime warranty.

Safelite Auto Glass is a very good... State Farm and Geico, some others, push their insured to them.. You could shop around for a better price but doubt you would do much better. I've had Safelite install a few windshields over the years and never an issue.

As for your windshield. You don't have any other choice but to replace it. Will not pass inspection with a crack that length. Oh, usually if a crack is over 6" no way they would even attempt to repair. Cracks that are not as long as 6" they will try but very often the crack just gets bigger as in your case...

Used Safelite many times over the years and highly recommend them. FYI, I have full glass coverage on my Geico policy and its not expensive. I've gone to Safelite to have a chip repaired and windows replaced. They put your insurance info into their computer and not a penny came out of my pocket, except a tip for their great workers:29:

Blinky19, my fellow New Yorker... I must tell you that auto glass coverage in many states is not inexpensive. As a New Yorker and because of NYS mandates, Auto Insurance companies have to have the auto glass coverage as they do. In many other states, the auto glass coverage is not mandated like it is in NY state..

skooby... You show "Carolina" as your state. Are you in S. Carolina? you may want to check with you insurance in regard to that window glass deductible. Unless you are residing in S. Carolina and have the vehicle insured in another state..

South Carolina Auto Glass Insurance

The state of South Carolina has the standard insurance coverages in regards to autoglass coverage. Coverage for an autoglass loss would fall under the comprehensive coverage portion of your personal auto policy (PAP). In South Carolina, there is a state mandated waiver for deductibles in relation to auto glass for all passenger vehicles. (South Carolina DOI) If you have a PAP in the state of South Carolina, the deductible amount you selected under your comprehensive coverage would be waived for all auto glass claims.

Only Florida, Kentucky, and South Carolina waive the car insurance deductible for windshield repair or replacement and thus are referred to as having free windshield replacement or as zero deductible states.

Safelite IS answering the phone for the Hartford and many others glass claims. They send a letter on the Hartford or other Insurance company letterhead as though they were the company. Make no mistake, you ARE talking to Safelite when of course they steer you towards their shops. Insurance companies are fine by this--they are the ones that gave over their work to Safelite to save a buck and not have their own direct employees doing the work.

Any crack repair guy should have told you that wasn't repairable. The general rule is that only stars and chips smaller than a quarter are repairable - an enlarging crack is not.

A 5-inch linear crack is not repairable, and the insurance company normally asks how big the crack is before they authorize a repair. I've done this three times and that has been the case every time.

Most ins companies cover chip repair because it saves them money. At this point you're stuck paying your deductible. Bad luck but that crack wasn't repairable. The price sounds about right to me, especially if there are any sensors on the glass.

Two years ago, I had my windshield replaced by Safelite. I highly recommend them (at least the one in Gulfport, MS). The other day, I noticed the molding had come loose and was buckled. I took it to Safelite but was told that this has been a problem with the 2012 Nissan Muranos. The company they used was making the windshields with the molding attached so it wouldn't come loose but those are hard to find now. Once they find one, they'll let me know and will replace my windshield. I'm glad I chose Safelite in the beginning because they have a lifetime warranty and this particular problem will be covered by their warranty.

Hmmm...I don't recall reading about this before, so thanks for the heads-up.
