Vary speed, no hard acceleration or braking, no prolonged single-speed driving, for 1200 miles. No special oil change period. First oil change at 5000 miles.

This works.

The advice I always give people is: drive it like you're going to drive it. But make sure to use the engine's entire RPM/speed range and change oil and filter early - just in case.

I used to ALWAYS change my own oil. Now I NEVER do, at least on cars under warranty. Why? About 20 years ago there was a huge court fight where an owner had an engine failure and wanted the engine replaced under warranty. The car mfr refused to do so because the owner couldn't prove he'd kept the oil changed. That was the last time I ever changed my oil on a new car under wty.

If you insist on changing it yourself, you have to keep immaculate records including the receipts for the oil and filter. You also need to record the date and mileage each time you change it.

But you're rolling the dice....

It's actually pretty easy to keep impeccable records on maintenance. Been doing it for decades. An auto record book goes into each car at purchase time...I note things down to replacing the wiper blades. There's no way to know what you've done to your car other than to keep records. And although dealers do keep records, you're not required to have oil changes done by dealers; as noted by DJO, you just need to keep records. I note mileage, filter brand and number, oil brand, type and viscosity.

This is not a big deal for me, as I have only bought one new car, and that was in 1977. Otherwise they're all used, and only one in 30 years has still been in warranty. But since the car is all mine to keep up with, I want good records on everything I do to it.

The thing that bothers me about breaking in this car is the motor oil. The recommended oil is 0W-20, and from what I understand that is ONLY synthetic. I always ran Dino-oil in my new cars until the 10,000 mile point, then switched over to synthetic. Since Dino-oil isn't as "slick" as synthetic, this gave better break-in seating to the lubricated parts. I'm not at all sure how using synthetic right from the beginning might lengthen break-in time.

[I didn't write the text below - DJO]

That's a good question, but it has always seemed to me that the reduced wear during break-in was a good thing in terms of engine longevity.

Although I'm not a new car buyer, I have done a few short blocks - and from day one, I drove them the way I would drive them for the rest of the car's life. Of course, that doesn't mean 5 minutes at 7K RPM...but I'd run them up high in the RPM range occasionally.

Break in

thank you to all who have shared their input and thoughts. I use mobile 1 in my other new car so that is what I am planning in this one. Wife will be driving this one so I will tell her to vary speed some. Thanks again

That's a great oil choice, and good advice for your wife. I'm sure it will work out well.

That's the same recommendation that came with my 2012 Maxima when it was new. Seemed to work out just fine so I'll go that route again.

Thanks

So Murano comes with Synthetic blend (semi-synthetic) from the factory, but what viscosity and what brand? Just curious to know if that semi is supposed to help break-in engine being more viscous compared to full synthetic low viscosity 0W20 that we are supposed to put at first oil change?

Also, how often you guys change oil in CVT? From what I've heard so far, it's better to change it more often than manual says. I don't remember what mileage manual says to change it, but it's something like >100,000miles - which is IMHO a "no-no". I was thinking to change it at 45K and then every 2 ears. Is this overkill?

You don't need to change CVT fluid at 50K. There is a fluid wear/contamination test the dealer can do and it will tell you when a change is needed. Most Muranos seem to go well over 100K miles without the need for changing.

As far as engine oil, the semi-synthetic does allow a bit more friction during break-in. But you don't need to keep running it longer than the manual specs.
