I don't think its necessarily "Illegal" - or at least not that cut-and-dry.

My previous car was a Hyundai Veloster and it came with a cable harness to hook up a video unit to the display via RCA jacks to the Aux port. There was also a A/C power outlet in the center console. So it came from the factory with the ability to connect a game console to the center stack screen. I don't know why. It wasn't really a selling feature but more of a "Hey, you can do this. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense but it's kinda cool, right?"

I never tried it myself but I'm sure it was only functional with the car in Park. There are plenty of aftermarket head-units with extending screens that play DVDs also. Again, I'm sure there's something that blocks this functionality when the car is in motion.

Even though I agree it should be illegal, it doesn't seem that having hardware to play video for the front occupants is against the law. Although, I'm sure actually playing video in the front while you're driving will absolutely get you pulled over. The specifics probably vary from state to state.

The Murano does not have this functionality though - and that's a good thing.

Most car manufacturers that have this capability disable it when the car in in drive. It's not necessarily illegal, but its a liability that the car manufacturers do not want to take. The murano doesn't have a DVD player so the question is moot. But perhaps you could play a movie through the flash drive.

This question is often asked in BMW models that have DVD drives for navigation; in those vehicles you can watch DVDs as long as the vehicle is stationary. It's defeated from the factory when the vehicle is moving.

However, there are various aftermarket adapters and devices which can defeat this, and enable use of the DVD player while the vehicle is in motion. I haven't seen a version for the Murano, nor do I endorse its use. If the OP has a DVD player in the dash and cares to do some general web searching, it's possible that he may find something.

The Murano doesn't come with an in dash DVD player like previous models. This is because they went to an SD card for navigation. It was a major cost reduction because I believe that the old Navi DVD drive was hidden behind the screen and required the screen to rotate open to access it. At least that was how it worked in my old Maxima. The single play CD player in the MY15 Murano is just that, CD only and not DVD capable.

Well, then, problem solved!
Not quite, it just eliminates the DVD option. You might be able to put movies on the SD drive and watch while parked. Don't think you can stream video via the USB. I don't think that you can even use YouTube as a streaming audio source because of the possibility that you may be watching video and driving. My previous maxima wouldn't let me via bluetooth.

Yes, it certainly IS illegal in the US for the driver to be able to see movies (for example) while the car is in motion. This does not vary by state. It is universal in this country. Now, GPS might qualify as a "gray area" since technically it's a moving video display. But I think the laws apply to entertainment rather than technical data displays.

In order for that to happen, the SD reader software would have to allow reading of the movie format and display it. I suppose one could experiment. Knock yourself out and get back to us.

Thanks!

If SD card with anything else like movies or else is inserted into SD slot - message will appear to re-insert original Nissan SD NAV Map etc.
The whole DVD watching thing is exaggerated - IMHO if you want DVD movies just buy aftermarket DVD players or numerous tablets that can be adapted to Muranos interior via holders etc. For rear passengers it's very easy - either DVD Headrests or simply any DVD player-tablet with holder. No other way.

There's even an option to change Nissan Connect 8 inch central Screen to noname Chinese crap models that are abundant on ebay and that play DVD's and are based on Android, you can play games and even go to internet etc., but quality sucks - they may get glitchy and stop functioning in 1 week.

I am not sure if your head unit allows playing/watching video at all, but of it does, you need ground the brake wire from the unit and thats it. You will be able to watch video while in motion.

Well, it will go against the law, but be smart and don't watch movies while you drive, it will safe your life and life others.

Regarding to the rear passengers, if you add headrest monitors or central video, there is nothing to worry about, just do not connect audio to your stock speakers, let them use the headphones.

The best stock video headrests made by Invision, the cheap chinese all will do work great, however buy it directly from manufacturer. I have both and like both as well.
