Just wondering about map updates to the factory navigation system. Is it done automatically via satellite links or does one have to get it hooked up to the net or some other way to update maps like dealer only type thing. Mine is a 2011 and we plan on doing a lot of travel through out the USA this summer with it and want to have things updated before we start travel season.
Thing surprised me last fall when I started it one afternoon and it talked to me saying there was severe weather warnings in my area.
Any input is appreciated.

For model years 2011-2014 you can go to the Navteq website and buy the CDs which you download yourself.

A lot of folks think their factory navigation updates automatically, but it does not. Most require the use of a CD ROM (I guess technically it may be a DVD) to update. I think you need to check with the dealer.

The earlier Murano models use CD/DVD to update the nav system. For 2015 Nissan changed the nav system to use a card (similar to that in a camera) that sits next to the CD slot, so updates are made via the card, don't have to use CD/DVDs any longer.

Holy crap, I almost fell off my chair after looking it up thru Navtech leads me to Nissan site. $180 is a bit steep when one can buy a new portable unit with lifetime updates cheaper than this.
Been searching for a while and all roads lead directly to Nissans site as the only supplier for this.
I think I will check at the dealer to see if they offer the update for a reduced fee. That is flat out robbery.

If you guys think Nissan updates are expensive, you should check BMW. You'd feel grateful to Nissan.

That's how I've always done it in my 07 Murano. I even built a nice holder that mounts in one of the small storage compartments to keep the screen of the phone visible.

On my 2008 BMW, I'll use the built-in nav. More buttons!! OOOoooooOOOOOooo!

I do not think it's worth the money. Using cellphone apps such as Google Maps or Waze puts Nissan's GPS to shame.

I hardly use the GPS on my 2011 Murano.

I'm old school, still do not have a smart phone and will not have until my 8 year old Casio GZ1 dies which looks like never the way its going, one advantage to buying a MILspec phone I guess lol.

If dealer can't do better I will trust the interstates and major roads didn't change to drastically in 4 years >:D

It's understandable, plus the screen size is a plus.

I wonder if one can borrow someone else's CDs.

IMO a smartphone is the single best tool you can acquire today. The increased ability it gives you to save money, communicate, navigate and carry out an incredible variety of other functions is unsurpassed in the history of the world.

Aside from that, of course, it's no big deal. ;)

Save your money. I updated my 2009 paid 150 for a code which the dealer used to do the update for 100. Total cost $250 and saw no difference. In fact the new update took me to a gas station in PA that wasn't even there anymore:eek: I've used the GPS in my new car quite a few times and have no issues so far.

I get free lifetime updates on my Garmin and all I need to do is plug it into the computer. I know people like the nav built in, because it's kind of gee whiz, but it's really inefficient and costly compared to other technology, including smart phones, that is available today.

Maybe my next vehicle will have it, but not until the auto companies make some improvements.

I have the built-in GPS because I bough my car pre-owned and it came with it. Hopefully Apple and Google speed up the process to develop CarPlay so we can have decent apps on our future cars.

I paid for the update on our 2011 but we drive a lot between NY and Florida and everywhere in between (I have 71k miles on it to prove it). New things are popping up daily in the area including I95. So for us it was worth the $$$. I can use my iPhone or the Garmin I have in other vehicles we own but I like having it built in and integrated.
It took about 45 minutes and the 5 DVDs to update the nav btw.

No. Theres a code that comes with the CDs. If its been used already, they cant be reused except to be reinstalled on the original vehicle.

To me its well worth the $180, since I travel from Canada to the US alot and the navigation has been a dream come true to get us to different places. If I think how much gas it saved me from wondering around and wasting time, I think it would have paid for itself! I use it alot.

I just did the update. The DVD set cost approx $169. I paid the Dealer $100 to do the update. It took approx 3 hrs
2012 Sl Murano, The package supplies a vehicle specific activation code and instructions. Its does a software update and then the map updates to the Nav. System.

I paid as I wanted to have no issues with the updates, the Vehicles needs to be running with the ignition on or a battery source attached which the dealer told me they used. Bluetooth needs to be turned off for the updates to take.

Previous Map Version 11- 12 Map No.1, Program Version X9U12003

Current Version after the Update . Gend. NA GA. Program Version X9U62019

I am in Georgia so I adjusted for my area, I went to the car show yesterday and compared and its looks similar to the new vehicles

Thx Doug
