05 Murano, 29K miles, & now $1K in repairs

I am so sad. From the first time I saw my Murano I loved it, but now it is having problems!

I bought it new, and did all its service at the dealership. My work commute is short, so it only has $29K miles. I had noticed in the last 2 years it was driving more sluggish, and even had the full service done in the fall but they didn't find anything.

The warranty just expired this spring. I noticed once a couple of months ago that when I turned the key in the ignition that it wouldn't start. (Just got new battery a year ago.) Then a few weeks ago, once more it wouldn't start. I called the dealership but it was $100 just to diagnose. Then yesterday the Service Engine Soon light came on. By yesterday afternoon the car had died in traffic. I managed to re-start and drive to dealership.

Today they called and said it needs over $1,000 in repairs. I was shocked, and said that seemed excessive for a car with so few miles. And they just said, "What do you expect, it is FIVE YEARS OLD." I said to some people that may not be that old, especially with so few miles. But they just said if you thought of it over 5 years it wasn't that much.

I had loved my car but now I'm afraid I'm going to have to keep pouring money into it. I don't know, I'm just really frustrated and disappointed right now.

I should have the complete list when I pick it up later today. It was $337 for the bank one camshaft position censor, and then $200+ for some kind of engine clean which is why they said it wasn't starting, and then $800 for something in the front that may have had to do with hydraulics but at that point my brain had short circuited...much like my car. I will post more details later today when I get written statement from them.

@njjoe

I agree! I wanted to take it to a mechanic, but mine told me that he isn't able to read all the Nissan codes. And I called another one who specializes in Nissan, who could read all the codes, and they charged $90 to read them. I was planning to shop around more but then the car died. I thought for $15 more I could let Nissan read the codes and see what was really wrong. But, yeah, I wish I would have had more time. I didn't get all the work done though, just the camshaft. I told them just do what needs to be done so I could drive it out of there. I will have to give some thought to the other repairs.

Welcome to the forum.

It's too late now, but in the future you are better off taking you car to an independent garage for non-warranty work. An honest, competent mechanic can do the same work and will more than likely charge you a lot less than the dealer.

A $200 engine clean on a car with less than 30kmiles. I would say they are yanking your leg and taking advantage of your lack of car knowledge. Unfortunate, but Nissan dealerships do this.

I can understand the sensor, but would be more curious about the $800 "fix" for the front end. Get the detailed report. Sometime a call to Nissan Corporate is a good idea b/c I think they may have hosed you. :28:

This is as far as I had to read to know you are likely getting screwed by this dealer. There IS no service required at under 30K miles, unless it was a mere oil and air/in cabin filter change. Or maybe you just brought it in to get it checked out since the performance had degraded. I know it's kind of insignificant compared to your present woes, but out of curiousity, what was done to your Mo at this `full service?'

And, if you peruse this forum, you'll see that not all dealer service departments are bad. I wouldn't hesitate to use mine even for non-warranty work.

My Nissan service department was always on me to get all the additional service work done. They said it was based on time, not mileage. Unfortunately, my full service was basically the most expensive oil change of all time, because I honestly don't know what else they did. My tire treads were wore down and starting to come apart at the seam, they didn't point this out, my belts were cracked (found this out later), they didn't mention it. I think they may have changed the AC filter and were supposed to do an inspection of the whole vehicle for potential trouble. I was trying to find the statement from the dealer which itemized what they actually did but can't find it.

I really liked my service department for the longest time, but they've changed in the last year or so.

@ hokey777

It is Nissan of Garden Grove in Orange County, California.

@jeffs3232

That is a good idea, I will try contacting their corporate office on Monday

Just an update: I picked up my car yesterday. Originally it was my understanding that they charged $104 for the diagnosis, but if I agreed to have the repairs done that the diagnosis would not be an additional charge, and I would just pay for the repair itself; however, when I got my bill I was billed for the diagnosis. The service manager said if he hadn't billed me for the diagnosis he would have just added it onto the labor so the amount would have been the same.

Here is what I paid:

$103.95 Diagnosis
$103.95 Sensor (#P0340 CMP SEN/CIRC-B1)
$127.73 Part

=$ 335.63

Notes: Perform "consult" self-diagnostic test, function test
Replace bank 1 camshaft position sensor

Work recommended:

$179.99 Fuel induction/throttle chamber decarbon (maintenance)
$818.00 Front Transverse links (bushings broken/leaking)
$189.99 Automatic CVT Trans fluid change (I did this at my mechanic in April, but dealership advised the fluid still did not look clean.)

When I picked up my car I noticed the Service Engine Soon light was still on. I asked them about this and they said they would have a tech reset it. (The tech got back into my car and put it in reverse with the PARKING BRAKE still on. The car made this huge SCREEEECH, until he realized what he had done and released the brake. I just looked at him in shock.)

Then when they brought me back my car they said the Service Engine Soon light was actually back on for a DIFFERENT code now. They said they reset it but it may come back on later.

And that's all, folks. I drove my car out of there and will have to think about what to do next.

05 Murano,

How is the car running now?

The 3 recommended repairs should not even give you any codes. So long you keep your cvt fluid level in check. Use some fuel injector cleaner. You can even replace those lower control arm yourself--you only need to remove 4 bolts. Your car should be ok.

nitely,

So far so good, the car has been running fine this weekend. Next week I will do more freeway driving, so will wait to see how that goes. Have calls into a few local mechanics to get estimates for the recommended items from the dealership. I will look into what I need to do for the lower control arm replacement, i didn't realize it was that straight forward to fix it.

05 Murano,
I don't know if you are handy or not, but the cvt fluid change is as simple as drain and refill---like doing motor oil change without filter. Very easy. NS-2 cvt fluid cost $15-$20 a quart and you need 6-7 quarts. That is the amount that you can drain out of the pan--there is another 3 quarts or so inside the system that remains--but should be ok. This is a long life fluid. Never needs changing prior 100k miles. I you do drain and refill 2-3 times within 200k miles you should be good. With your mileage --30k --I doubt if you need it. Just check the level--axle seal leak is the usual cause of cvt fluid level going down.

I feel ur pain now buddy!; my 05 murano;(same year as urs) doesnt even have 90,000 on the clock yet; and already i am having the same issue that cropped up a few months ago with the same exact results which I will post all about in another thread that I will start here....but just wanted to tell ya I feel ur pain!!! because in the past 4 months, my parents have spent probably 3000+ in repairs alone!!!! between shock(s), strut, suspension this or that, etc etc and the list goes on...let me just leave this part at that for now the rest comes in another thread which i will start...

"The service manager said if he hadn't billed me for the diagnosis he would have just added it onto the labor so the amount would have been the same."

I would go straight to the manager and demand a refund of that charge...you were told by the service manager that you would not be charged for the diagnosis if you had the work done. He should be held to his word - and not by inflating the service charge.

And under no circumstances would I go to that dealership again....but don't tell the manger that. Let him think he made you happy.
