My 2015 Murano Platinum has a check engine light on that pops a code of P059F, which is for the active grille shutter. I see the shutter and all but was wondering if anyone had ever changed one of these out? I've searched the web for information but am not finding anything. Can anyone advise? Thanks!!!

Bump...... anyone on the active grill shutter? I can hear it making noise at start up and when the engine is turned off however the shutter does nothing. Not exactly sure what it is suppose to do during those times. BTW, it's a $335 fix at the dealership.

So, a little story...check engine light came on a few weeks ago. Wife's car, told her to take it to the dealership, too techno, don't like jacking with it. Sum total for repairs was $7,500, the majority being the CVT trans, which was $4,500. Other things included were spark plug change, bad coil back side of engine of course, active grille shutter, brake flush, coolant flush, new brakes, replacement of radar sensor, and tires. Might have been a few other small things in there. Do agree, per maintenance standards some of this is legit. Anyway, the two things keeping the check engine light on were the bad coil and the active grille shutter. I had them replace the plugs and coil and the tech told me that the grille shutter would also keep the light on. Told him, screw it, replace plugs and coil....pain in the but as the intake has to come off....$700. I wished now I had pulled those codes myself, as I have a hard time believing that that coil and shutter went bad the same time. Possible, maybe. Car has 115k on it.

Bigger concern is trans, though it appears to be just fine. At 65 k it was doing some jerky stuff, took it in, out of warranty of course....Tech said needed an update which he did, then said it is popping a code for trans replacement.....what! After update, did not have any issues with jerky stuff and have driven it another 50k. Talked to wife about trading it in for a new one as she really likes the Murano. Our car is in excellent appearance, not a door ding on it and looks brand new. It is a 2015 Platinum AWD. Trade in value $10k. Wow! Told her we're keeping it and driving it until it won't drive anymore and then I'll fix it.

I did a quick search using Adobe Acrobat and found the following: Section EC has some troubleshooting procedures, and sections DLK and EXT look like they additional information and have some removal/installation instructions.

Yeah, you would think the information on the cooling related active grill shutter be in cooling, but it's in the BODY EXTERIOR, DOORS, ROOF & VEHICLE SECURITY section of all places...

You can download by clicking on each section, then clicking on the download symbol at the top, or using "Trouble loading the file? Click here to download a copy. " at the bottom.

I don't see the table of contents section for 2015, so I attached it here (section FWD.) Place in the same folder you placed all the other sections.

I have a 2019 and threw that code because I removed the shutter completely wanting it removed. I first tried to reinstall just the motor part of the assembly that mounts to the shutter and hoped plugging this in alone would clear the code but it came back. After more reading and troubleshooting I found that the vehicle does a test of the shutter upon startup and that basically opens and closes the shutter via this motor and without the shutter attached to the motor it doesn’t have a “stop” point so the motor turns and in turn throws the code again. That being said I then attached the motor to the shutter again and reinstalled it and cleared the code and it has stayed gone. Knowing what I now know I would recommend removing the shutter assembly. It is easily removed VIA 2 ten millimeter bolts without even having to remove the bumper just get under it and you can remove it easily. Once removed detach the motor VIA the Phillips heads screws attached to the shutter and once removed verify the shutter opens and closes easily. If it indeed does the the only issue should be replacement of this motor assembly not the entire shutter assembly. If I get a chance to work on my car this weekend I’ll see about getting part numbers off of mine for you.

"It is easily removed VIA 2 ten millimeter bolts without even having to remove the bumper just get under it and you can remove it easily."

They must have change the configuration of the bumper on the 2019 to allow for ease of removal of the active grille shutter. There is no way it could be removed on my 2015 without removing the bumper. Believe me, I tried. Even the service manual dictates removal of the bumper. Regardless, removing the front bumper was really not that big of a job. I posted removal of the front bumper within the forums, it's the biggest part in replacing the active grille shutter.

They changed the front bumper in 2018 so that’s likely true I’m sure. All I did was remove the lower shield which was a few clips and bolts. Once that was removed there’s a 10mm bolt on each side. I honestly have no use for the shutter since all I do is city driving in Florida. Too bad it isn’t possible to be removed and disabled without a check engine light.

Hi Guys - I am also getting the P059F error. My wife hit a big tire chunk on the freeway. After inspecting the shutter it was bound up after the impact. I was able to free it and now it moves freely. I still get the check engine light however. Someone above mentioned replacing just the actuator portion, is this possible? Also, I have a 2015 so the front fascia needs to be removed? It looks like I might be able to get the shutter off without removal.

Anyone have updates?

I had to remove the front bumper and I seriously doubt you will be able to accomplish the job without doing so. Getting the bumper off is not that big of a deal. And no, you can't just buy the actuator. At least not new. The poster above kept the actuator and removed the grilles to prevent the actuator from getting damaged like yours was. If the actuator is working, no CEL. Your actuator is damaged and that is why you can move shutters freely and yet get the CEL.

I am trying to figure out why people say you can’t buy just the actuator that’s nonsense. They say you can’t because they want you to pay for a new active air shutter at the tune of 150-200 dollars. I took my active air shutter out of my 2016 Murano and found there were 3 screws holding the actuator on the shutter, I removed the actuator thinking ok if I can remove it then there is a replacement. The actuator was bound up tight as tight can be but the shutters worked fine manually moving them. So did some research and found that for actually sells the actuators for these actuators. Had I known that I would have gotten actuator put the shutters in closed position and put actuator in at a cost of 80 dollars and saved money. So I saved old shutter less motor and will get new actuator for it from FORD and have it for a spare. Recommendation do not throw out the old shutter unless the fins are damaged use as a spare for down the road. Happy motoring!!

I bought the new active grill shutter locally from a dealer. It was $141 after tax. Cheapest by far that I could find.

I plan on performing the repair this weekend. Once the new shutter is installed, how quickly will the check engine light extinguish? Is it a take it around the block kinda thing or will it be immediate?

Anything else I need to know?

Also, anyone have tricks with the front radar sensor? My AEB system is disabled currently. The sensor looks fine however.

Update - I performed the repair this weekend. I had to remove the front grill, front fascia, and part of the wheel well trim. Once the area needed is exposed it is a straight swap of the grill shutter. Once I installed the new part I started the vehicle to verify function and all was well. Reinstalled the trim/fascia/grill and verified function again. Took the car to go grab breakfast about 20 minutes with a freeway run and the check engine light would not extinguish. I ended up running to autozone and picking up an Innova 3020rs ($45ish) code reader and used that to clear the code. After driving the rest of the weekend the light has stayed off and looks to be a successful repair. Now to go get my smog checked!

All in all, was $141 for the shutter, $45 for the code reader, $9 for push pin pliers, and about 2 hours in my garage by myself. If you had a handy friend help I bet it would take an hour. We had quotes for $1000 and $800 to get this fixed.

If anyone reading this needs to perform this repair the push pin pliers are a must. Access to a lift would also help tremendously.

Thanks for all the input everyone.

Not much info online to change the shutter assembly for my 2015 Murano Platinum except from the aforementioned manuals. I printed off the ext. sections and attempted the repair myself. Many, many pushpins along with a few screws and bolts. Started at the top and pulled the guides above the radiator, then pulled the grill along with disconnecting the camera, then pulled the bumper cover by partially removing the outer wheel trim, then removing the pushpins and bolts underneath the front spoiler, (not removing the spoiler), then unsnaping each side of the bumper cover from the fender and 2 pushpins on top of the bumper cover. After removing the bumper cover, I was able to change out the shutter assembly without removing the bumper, just 1-10mm bolt on each side and 2 pushpins. Once changed, I started the vehicle with the shutter in the closed position and it worked fine. I then re-attached everything in the reverse order. After about 10 miles and 2-3 starts later, the CEL light went off. And yes, you could just change the actuator by itself, but I decided to change out the whole assembly. Thanks for all of the input from the community!

Would actuator motor #A24041153212, listed for '17-'18 Altima & '18-'24 Murano and others, work as well as the Ford #EP5Z-10884-A?
Pictures sure look like it's the same part, but of course that's not a reliable credential.

Could this be related to the accident?
The active grille shutter is at the front of the car so, yes, it absolutely can be related.

The collision shop gave me a 3 year warranty. Is it a long shot they would warranty for this code?;
You'll have to read the fine print of the warranty to see what it does and does not cover.

Did the shop have to replace the active grille shutter? If yes, then there should be a manufacturer warranty on that part irrespective of the collision shop's warranty, which the shop should honor if they installed it. That's, if the grille shutter itself is defective.

But, the bottom line is that there needs to be some diagnosis to find out the root of the problem.

Hey all. Here's a question that I haven't seen asked: what if the active grill is in the open position and it's left like that? Mine threw the code this morning and the shutter is in the open position and has no give, meaning I tried to move it with a flat screwdriver and it doesn't move. What is the drawback in just leaving it open?
