I too am looking for crossbars for my Mo. I was told "they're so new that they couldn't find them in the parts system" by my sale rep. I have been scouring the internet trying to find some with no luck. Summer is coming, I have activities that require topside transport...

 

I had been waiting for my retractable cargo cover for a few months, and finally picked it up last Saturday. I thanked guy at the dealership for letting me know they had come in, and he remarked, "Now if we could just get the crossbars, and satisfy the rest of the customers." So, I guess they are still unavailable at the moment.

 

My sales guy called yesterday and it sounds like it might be getting close. He said they can now order new Mo's with the cross bars pre-installed but the parts themselves are still unavailable. But, the fact they exist now is better than nothing.... I guess...

 

So, it is not just me feeling like I am getting the run-around. Here is a question that no one at the dealership could/would ever answer: Why are the crossbars not an option when building a Platinum level Mo? Does anybody know? Is there some issue with the panoramic glass roof and its ability to support the added weight of a cargo carrier? I wanted the panoramic roof, but I also need to be able to put a cargo carrier up top. Anybody have any info out there? Thanks.

 

2015 Murano "Tech Package" Crossrail Complaint

When I purchased my 2015 Murano SL with Tech Package in January 2015, I made it clear to my sales advisor that I needed crossrails to transport 2 kayaks. At that time, crossrails were still being manufactured so I waited...and waited...only to recently learn that crossrails cannot fit on any of the 2015 Murano Tech Package cars. I highly doubt an aftermarket crossrail can be made due to whatever reason Nissan cannot make them. When I look at the roof of the car, those side rails are flush with the roof and based on experience with using side and cross rails, I cannot see how there would be any solution to this problem. I bought the car to use for kayaks and now I cannot go kayaking. I met with my advisor to arrive at a solution. The only solution acceptable to me is to trade in the car and get the same car without the Tech package and reimburse me the difference in whatever costs I previously incurred. They made me an offer that involved me paying them so I refused. So, I contacted Nissan Consumer Affairs at 1-800-647-7261 and spoke with an agent who gave me a care number. My case will be referred to a Regional Consumer Affairs Specialist who will discuss this issue with my dealer. I am very flipped about this and encourage all of you who have the tech package and need crossrails to contact the number above. The more legit complaints out there on forums and social media, the better the outcome (I hope).

 

Is it because the tech package has the moon roof? If so its a legal thing about glass breakage I would assume. I bet they will work as the roof rails are the same on all models.

Makes you wonder why they have the rails on the Platinum if you can’t put on the cross bars.

 

That's what I'm thinking. Since the opening sunroof portion drops down into the cabing...why not just buy the cross bars and install yourself? If you look closely...the parts already on your Murano with the sunroof already have points you can install the cross bars. Just pop the inserts out with a flat-tipped screw driver.

 

Thule and Yakima will help you out with the cross-bars, and their options will increase both load capacity and roof clearance.

None of the companies dealing in roof racks have a solution for the 2015 Murano with or without the Tech package. I have been trying for two months to locate something that would fit since Nissan does not appear to be in any rush to make good on their statements in the sales brochure

There are plenty of systems, and they don't have to be built for the Murano. I know, I have one. And now that I sold the Murano, the same cross bars fit on my 2008 BMW 328xi wagon with side rails.

 

Yeah, but did you have a 2015 Mo? Because the roof rails are flush with the roof, standard cross bars don't have the clearance. The links you posted won't work on this body style.

 

Thanks for the clarification. I just checked photos of the 2015 from above and you are absolutely right! I didn't know they were mounted flush.

I'd consider them to be body trim, not functional rails.

 

Like I said yesterday, PLEASE - everyone who faces this problem, call Nissan Consumer Affairs at 1-800-647-7261. The only way this will be resolved to our satisfaction without cost to us is to make a collective statement to the company.

By the way, I bought my car in January and recently was offered a trade to a non tech package Murano which resulted in me losing $4000 and....I already paid nearly $4000 in finance payments. So that's an $8000 loss. This situation is unbelievable. I saw 2 cars today with kayaks on them and thought..."I should be on the water today." Please call Nissan now.

 

I'm not sure whether Nissan or the aftermarket will come up with a solution first. I checked both Yakima and Thule and neither show a solution for the 2015.

Before you take an $8000 loss (and you sound pretty whiny about the idea) buy a light trailer, throw your gear in it and go where you need to go. When the racks come out, get them and sell the trainer. That will cost you under $1000 including a $150 hitch.

Ah yes...good solution. Buy a trailer for $600 plus the hitch so consumers can spend even more money.... and not everyone has room for a trailer where they live. Whiny about taking a significant loss of funds? What's wrong with that? Sounds like you have disposable income. I am hopeful Nissan will do right by it's customers but only the customers in this situation can help by calling Nissan. Please attempt to refrain from being nasty in forums. It's inappropriate.

 

You are correct, it's inappropriate.

But I'm not being nasty, I'm serious. If you need a solution right away, there is nothing wrong with facing reality and finding a fix. TODAY, unless you feel like flipping down the back seats, shoving the kayak inside and using bungee cord to hold the hatch door down, your options are limited.

And yes, I have disposable income. So do you if you're lugging kayaks around. If you are actually contemplating trading off the Murano and taking an $8000 loss (I doubt it, I think it's just dramatics) then I have proposed an option that's less expensive than taking an $8000 loss.

Namely: install a hitch and get a utility trailer. Got any other solutions you can put into action this week? Hmmm?

As I pointed out, you can resell the trailer and recover some of your money. I realize that's not attractive, but it gets you on the road immediately. This may also be a solution for Freedom55, as a light trailer may be a very appropriate way to carry lumber for projects.

Or you can continue to complain about Nissan abandoning its owners, etc. I realize you're frustrated, but I don't see many alternatives if you want an option other than waiting until Nissan comes out with crossbars.

 

I feel sorry for the OP and all others who need to carry stuff; I have a heavy tandem kayak which I'm giving to a friend due to shoulder pain and limited storage space but I still need to carry lumber and other things once in a while. Could it be that the around view monitor would be partially blocked by the crossbars? I don't know where the various cameras are mounted.


The 2015 Murano is built in the USA, I think we should be able to get an answer straight from the horse's mouth...I doubt the panoramic roof has anything to do with this, but who knows? Lots of possible scenarios but no definite answer; should be resolved by the time I trade in my 2014!!!

You might consider that roof trim but the brochure says that there are crossbars available and I have looked at at lest two other makes with the same type of roof rails that DO have crossbars including the Hyundai Santa Fe Limited and that has a panoramic roof as well.

If you say you have it...you ought to have it available!

Incidentally, my sister is a kayak instructor and at last count, I think she had six of them. Any hobby sneaks up on you. Don't ask how many firearms or electric basses I own......

 

Any updates here, I have the moonroof as well and just purchased yesterday and was very upfront on the need for the racks as I race bikes? i am drawing blanks and the parts department was closed yesterday.

Thankfully I found this thread while sitting at the dealer last week. I decided to postpone my purchase of the 2015 Murano SV until this problem is solved. My sales rep offered many incentives to sign today but I cannot take the risk of not having crossbars. I cannot get any solid answers from anyone at Nissan corporate. My dealer is just as frustrated as I am. My dealer says that the new Murano Platinum models come with the crossbars installed. He suggested that we swap out the crossbars from a floor model Platinum and put them on my SV version. I thought that was a good idea but I wont sign until I see the bars on the SV model. Now I wait to see if my dealer can get a new Platinum model in with crossbars so we can swap. Then, the dealer can just order the crossbars to replace the floor model. Ill keep you posted.

 

I'd like to hear how this turns out. My sales guy tried that and the Platinum arrived without any crossbars.

 

My dealer just called me back. He confirmed that the crossbars will interfere with the sunroof. He said that he can put the cross bars on my SV, but I will not be able to open the sunroof. He then suggested that I look at models without the sunroof option. If I had already purchased the car, I would have him put the crossbars on. I'd deal with the in-ability to open the sunroof. I'm glad to get final confirmation that the crossbars do not work properly with the sunroof option. At least its a final answer to this design flaw. bummer.

They informed us that Nissan hada huge quality issue with a Supplier at the time of release and now have to getthem through a totally new Supplier.

Doesn't really address if the moonroof issue will be included. I think the tilt function could be disabled by dealership for insurance.

 

If this is the only issue then they could supply a shim to sit between the roof rail and the foot of the crossbar with a set of slightly longer bolts to accommodate the added height of the shim. Shouldn't cost much and would certainly be a quicker fix than re-tooling.

This will be my last post here. Our dealer has taken the 2015 Murano back.

Apparently, there is a problem with the crossbars. Eventually, you will be able to get them from Nissan BUT Nissan does not recommend putting them on if you have that moon roof.

We called Nissan while at the dealer and Nissan said that while putting on the crossbars won't void your warranty, they will not be responsible for damage caused by the crossbars because Nissan doesn't recommend them for cars with the moonroof option.

So there. Fortunately, our dealer took the car back after one week. Good luck to all who are dealing with this issue. I think it's a fraudulent misrepresentation by Nissan & it's agents, the dealers.

 

I am at this crossroads as they have my vehicle back waiting for answers; the service department can disable the roof versus just the tilt. I am inclined to get an SL without moonroof as disabling it is silly unless they want to give me the money back on the tech package.
