ECU reset works but doesn’t last

I reset the air idle control by following the procedure, key on, push accel pedal 5 times, wait for blinking to stop then start car.

this works and the idle drops to around 500 or stay. The idle stays at 500 so procedure works, but after car is shut off and restarted the idle resets to the previous 1000 rpm.

what is the trick tokeep the relearned Low idle in theECU?

thx

Have your battery and alternator load tested to rule them out as a potential cause of your idle speed resetting issue...

Also clean any battery terminal corrosion if present, clean the battery terminals with a brush, and make sure you reattach them snuggly.

If you're just pushing the accelerator pedal 5 times then that's not the complete procedure. See the "Engine Control System" file in the service manual for your car. Be sure to do the other relearns first (accelerator position and throttle position).

Thanks for the tips. I cleaned battery terminals and even had battery charger connected to guarantee voltage greater than 12.9.

I followed the full relearn procedure.

the idle does reset from 1000 to 600. I drive around for an hour with many stops and idle checks with Murano in park. All near 600. Which is good.

I turn the car off and restart and the idle returns to the previous level of 1000. It didn’t hold what it learned.

Ideas to try?

thanks

O.K. Then let's backtrack a little bit. Did the idle problem start right after you did some repair, maintenance or other work on the car? If so, what work was done?

Any other history on the car may be helpful so provide as much detail as possible.

Issue started about 2 weeks ago. I replaced one of the fuel dampers (rear one) as the car was making a ticking noise. Per the web, learned that it could be a fuel damper and sure enough after replaced the ticking noise went away. I was going to replace both of the dampers, but turns out the mounting holes for the front cylinder bank damper were mis-algined so I returned it.

To gain access to the rear damper I did have to remove some of the air intake tract. WHile apart I sparyaed some gumout on the throttle body. It was greasy. I probably should not of done that, but that is hindsight.

The idle air re-learn procedure works. The idle readjusts to 600. It just doesn't stay there. The "Service engine soon" light comes back on. I have a OBD2 so reset the monitor but the light comes back on after a few minutes of idling.

Thx for any help.

If that gumout spray hit any of the sensors, that could be your issue. Many folks have posted trying to clean the TB and ended up with CEL that is hard to remove. Good luck.

I've had this problem years ago when i replaced the sparkplugs and had to remove the throttle body. seeing it was dirty, i cleaned it. after putting all the parts back, the CEL light came on. the relearning process for throttle postion/idle will work for a day, but does not hold up overnight. what i did to fix it was disconnected the battery overnight. the following morning, i did the throttle position relearn process, and that time it stuck and therefore fixed the high idle. good luck.

Appears as though the issue has been resolved, and by a process I don't fully understand, but it has worked. Posting what worked for me for the next guy:

- Follow the full idle relearn procedure (clear all error codes, batt over 12.9v, gas pedal learning, throttle valve close position learning, then idle air volume learning BUT DO ALL OF THIS WITH ANY 2 FUEL INJECTORS ELECTRICALLY DISCONNECTED.

I found this on YouTube and the guy said he found it on a Maxima site. I was very skeptical but thought nothing to lose but 5 minutes of my time. I just unplugged the electrical cabling to 2 of the 3 front bank injectors, then did the full relearn procedure. The ECU now has the proper idle RPM learned and RETAINED in memory.

Thx for the help
