Electrical issue

I had to drive my son to school and on the way my 2014 Murano SL AWD suddenly lost some power where I had the pedal all the way down and it was just creeping along at 1mph. I pulled over and turned the car off for a moment. Turned it back on and it was fine except the brake light and battery light came on and then went back off. Still drove on down the road fine. Then I got into the turn lane at the end of the road and it did the same as before and all the lights came on and then off and the dash lights came on and went off and it wouldn't move. Put it in park and turned it off. Tried to crank it and it would not crank. Kept trying and it was like the battery was just steady dying. My husband came out and we went through different fuses to see if there were any blown. All good and then we tried to jump my murano off. Nada. Finally he had to leave for work so I called a tow. He left. A man stopped with a jump box and he tried. The car would crank but then shut off. Did this a few times before he was like, ok yeah..I tried but it's just not going to stay cranked. I had called the police since I was in the road stopped and could not put my car in neutral to push it out of the road. They show up and poke around the engine and push buttons and tried to put it in neutral but nada. They pulled out their jump box and tried. It cranked right up and kept running like it didn't just strand me in the road for over an hour. I cancelled the tow and drove it home and all it did was randomly flash the brake light and battery light on and off a few times. Turned it off and let it sit for a couple of hours. It cranked right up. The lights did the flash on and off a few times. Took it to advanced and had them check the battery and alternator. Battery fine and alternator came back as having issues. Went home and shut it off again. Cranked all through out the day with no problem and sometimes the brake and battery lights flash on and off and somtimes they don't. Left it overnight and cranked right up this morning. Obviously if I take it to a mechanic...I can't recreate the issue and chances of it happening again is possibly low. So any ideas? Anyone else have this happen?

Advanced Auto isn't going to help much unless you have them check trouble codes, which is critical to learning what's going on. A Nissan dealer may be able to get more info from codes than a parts store can.

You can do your own check on the battery and charging systems: check this. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGB6ZEjGm7Q&list=WL&index=24

If advanced checked the alternator and said it's having issues and you had the car die while driving and then it wouldn't crank or stay running after a jump start...... all those symptoms are pointing to a bad alternator. If you get lucky and it's bad all the time, it will measure bad with a voltmeter while parked in the driveway like it did at advanced. If the battery light on the dash goes on and off intermittently, the alternator may be working sometimes and go out of regulation unexpectedly at other times and you may not catch it with a basic voltmeter check. If your alternator measures good while parked in your driveway and you want to confirm with 100% certainty that your charging system is the cause of your problem, you'll need to get something that can measure the charging voltage while you drive and monitor it and do some additional troubleshooting to confirm it's not a wiring problem. But based on your description and the posts I've read here, I'd consider it about 99% likely that you're going to need a new alternator. Bad alternators are a frequent topic here on this forum.

Not only are alternator failures often reported here (daily to weekly), the record of successful replacements when using aftermarket alternators is terrible. For some reason the Nissan alternators are the only ones that seem to be reliable for replacements. That's unfortunate because they're more expensive.

AUGH...thank you for letting me know though it definitely is not good news for me. I don't have the cash to spring for a nissan mechanic and a Nissan alternator. I thankfully have a mechanic shop in my neighborhood and the owner is there today. Friend of ours as we watch the place when no ones there so he offered to run diagnostics for me for free to take out the guess work on it. I'm the type I like to keep a car as long as possible and hate getting new cars to have to get used to. Maybe this will be the push I need to get hubs to help me finish getting the 2003 Mustang up to par and road ready. 🤔

If that was news, then I assume you're new to working on cars. Make sure to do your homework on this process. It's a little more involved to replace the alternator on this engine than on many others.

Hoffman Nissan parts online has the alternator for your year Murano for $555.93, with a list price of $872.03. They do not offer a remanufactured alternator for this gen Murano.

Whenever you order any electrical part for your Murano, be sure to include your vehicle's VIN #.

For instance, the 3rd gen Murano uses two different style alternators, depending on the year. The first one is for the '15 - '17 years and the other is for the '17.5 - '24 years. Change-over is determined by the VIN #.

The later model alternator is $575.07 & $75.00 core, with a list price of $902.07. You can get a remanufactured one for $328.35.

All parts on Hoffman's site were listed with a 2 - 4-day ship date.

Good luck.
