Engine/CVT horrible, skipping and lunging

We have had the new Platinum Murano for a few months now. Everything about the car is really great except the transmission.

At slower speeds, town driving, when we accelerate just a little the car bogs down, gets quite jerky, lunges and skips until it gets to a higher rpm. We thought is was so bad that we took it to the dealer for service.

Service took it for a drive with us, and when we pointed it out he said oh yeah, I can get it to do this all day long. It's just part of the car and you aren't driving it hard enough. Frustrated we left.

And… I am calling BS on that excuse. I have never owned a car where the quality of driving was directly related to have I drive the car. The CVT problem is so bad and frustrating that if we are contemplating selling it.

Has anyone had this same driving experience, or even better does anyone know a solution?

Bill

I have tried to replicate it as well and have not been able to reproduce these issues. I think if it were a truly widespread issue, there would be more posts about it. And if were truly a big issue, I'm sure we will see some sort of recall or update.

I read several different automotive forums (BMW, Audi, MB) and all cars have their share of problems no matter how much they cost - $20k to $100k. There are always sour people on all of the forums that will never purchase brand XYZ again because of an isolated issue, regardless of the car make/model.

The reason there isn't hundreds of posts about a CVT problem here in the 3rd Gen forum is because it's doesn't seem to be a common issue. I...as with the others posted just before me...have had no such CVT behavior with my 2015 Platinum. Just like them...I have been very focused on trying to get my CVT to behave as described by the OP...but have had no CVT behavior anywhere close. It continues to perform as a extremely smooth...yet quick reacting CVT as designed.

We did spend ~$40k for this vehicle....and trust us..we definitely care how it drives.

I would continue to pursue getting your CVT issue resolved as that is not how the majority of the CVTs in the 2015 models behave. Something is definitely amiss with yours...and you shouldn't be having those issues with such a big purchase.

Well that's a torque converter locking and unlocking. It's an expected algorythm for CVT. It also happens on other speeds - all depends on current rpm, speed, engine load etc. The issue is only really annoying IF you have ubnormal lunging OR jitter-shudder back and forth like converter is locking and disengaging constantly e.g. in viscous cycle etc.

UPDATE -

Yes, I may have come across a bit sour, but I can assure everyone this is a valid issue at least on my car. I don't know how wide spread it is. I have a video of it now, but not sure I can upload video directly to this site. I will investigate maybe hosting it on youtube and link to it.

Regarding the current fix, I spoke again to the dealer on Friday. He also says that he drives a Murano and does not experience the problem. The one he is driving is very current. The plan now is for me to switch with him this week and drive the newer produced Murano for a couple of days and see if I can duplicate the problem. If I can't, then they are going to begin to replace CVO parts on mine. If I can duplicate the issue, then we will have to wait for Nissan to come up with a programming change for this.

Thanks for posting that video. My Platinum doesnt do that and i cannot induce it. Nissan replaced a boatload of rogue CVTs in 2008/2009 models before figuring out the issue they had, and Nissan was determined to make the CVT work for them, so they are not going to turn a blind eye. Keep at them, your problem is definitely abnormal. Id be worried about the stress that surging is placing on other things too.

Thanks all…. I go in tomorrow to drive a different (newer) Murano for a couple of days.

It's taken me 5 trips to the dealer to even get this far. BTW, Nissan1 today called back and said they have talked with a specialist and my car is acting normal. I hope you all can understand my frustration with this issue.

Thanks for all the feedback and encouragement. I am also happy to hear that I might have an isolated issue and there is hope!

UPDATE:

All - thanks again for all the interest and support. That's what makes forums great!

After showing the dealership the video, they traded me cars for a couple of days. I can tell you the Murano I was driving that was different also did not experience that issue. However, the dealership experienced it in my car that very night. The head of maintenance couldn't believe it! He has been in contact with Nissan, they couldn't believe it. He hooked up the computer and actually captured the sensor readings as it happened again while driving!

Long story short, this seems to be a pressure / cavitation issue with the pressure lines in this particular transmission. Not a wide spread issue!!!! Perhaps one of them kinked, or has a leak. The fix is a brand new transmission that is going in next week!

I hope this saga is coming to a close. Again, it appears we know the issue and also that this is not a wide spread issue. I hope everyone who reads this can rest at ease.

Thanks again all! I will post one more update after the new transmission next week.

UPDATE:

All, thanks once again to the feedback. Interesting turn of events.

Received the Murano a week ago last Monday after the new transmission was installed. That took about 4 days. Drove it for a couple of days and the good news is that the new transmission has not acted in the same way as the video I posted. It is not at all similar and we are pretty happy with that.

Wednesday night of that week the check engine light came on during the evening when we were driving home, and the next morning the car would not start. It would turn over, but no fire. Called the dealer right away, they were awesome and drove immediately to my home with a car. Tested the Murano at my home and it was having a communication ECM issue. Towed to the dealer. We think what happened was some transmission fluid got on a terminal connector and caused the communication issue. They cleaned all connectors, tested all voltage throughout the system, and it runs fine again.

I would be lying to say that I am confident the car is working moving forward. Today, yes it's working well. However, it's been so much that we are still a little nervous about it.

Having said that, the new transmission is working great and not at all like the first. So, I believe it was solved with the new transmission.

Any questions let me know, but I hope this is the last update!!!!!

Thanks all!

Hi, just to let you know I'm having the same problems you were having, just
a lot sooner MO less than 2 weeks old with 500 miles. Thought I would get
an update as how the replacement Tranny is doing. There shipping a new CVT
for mine, should be ready for pickup Wednesday.

As you can imagine, not a happy camper.

I do not think this is a super isolated issue... far too many are having this similar problem. I'm also having this issue, specifically between 15-20 MPH. It now happens every day and I'm extra careful while going through that band. So far no check engine lights etc but I did take a video of it to avoid the "Cannot reproduce issue" that often happens. Currently we have about 26,000 miles or so on our Platinum.

Not as bad as some have posted but there's something when I'm coming to a complete stop.

This is one of the reasons (new to AWD is the other) why I bought the extended warranty from Nissan.

I'm guessing this is not normal or something that will not go away, I have 12k/km.

No problems with my SL. Runs as smooth as anything I've ever driven. I just went over 1000 miles this weekend. Have only been burning Mobil regular gas without any issues. Got 27.9 mpg this weekend on a trip to Boston and back. Mostly at 75 to 80 mph.

Well I also officially need a new transmission due to error codes. The car bucks and revs go up and down at 15 mph @1000 RPMS. Very frustrated as this car was almost 42k and I rely on it for my business. This of course can happen to any new car, but this appears to be a trend and probably will be a wider spread issue then a one off error. If it was just an isolated failure many of us would not be having very similar symptoms with the same resolution. I have a lot of concerns about the tech team putting in a new transmission in, but hopefully it will be done correctly.

I noticed last evening for the first time that my Murano CVT has a dipstick tube with a cap on it. I removed the cap from the CVT dipstick tube and found to my surprise that there was no dipstick. The cap has an empty slot in the bottom of it that looks like where the top of a dipstick would be held.

Has anyone else noticed this, or am I missing a CVT dipstick?

Also, since there is a tube I am wondering if the bottom end of the tube is open to the transmission or has a plug in it. If it is open, then refilling the CVT can easily be done through this tube as on older models that had a dipstick.

Could a few people check to see if they have a CVT dipstick? It is a bit tricky to get the cap off. There is a keeper spring that needs to be pushed in with a small blade screw driver and it helps to grab the top of the cap with a pair of pliers as it is in there tight.

An update on our 15 Platinum with Tech. Dropped off the car Tuesday morning and they said it should be ready by Friday. No one called today so I placed a call mid afternoon to say nothing at all has been done and the transmission is on a nationwide backorder. They stated there are none in any dealerships and none available in the country at all. No idea when it's coming in and I do not know what to do, pretty frustrated right now. I understand defects happen and this is not in their control but there needs to be some time frames set in place for a resolution. I escalated through the main Nissan corporate line(which is now an outsourced call center) and I am awaiting a call back from a supervisor on Monday. Will keep everyone updated and hope no one else has a similar issue.
