I've just installed the cross bars to my roof rack by myself. Dealer charged $110 and after reading the manual figured I would to do it myself.

First, the cross bars roof rack system was horribly designed. It requires you use a cutting tool, a drill, and some instruments I don't even have yet.

For someone that didn't grow up with tools, I went and bought a dremel and did the deed. The instruction manual states you should take the roof rack off the roof but I decided to cut the roof rack because I didn't want to replace the clips.

I ran into a couple of complications as well such as losing some of the 6x25 metric Torx screws and some I've yet to resolve such as the cross bars being slightly too long (5mm) and not fitting flush to the roof rack. I tried adjusting the length but it requires a normal hex key to remove the initial panel but requires another star hex key that does not fit my standard tool set.

I've recorded a video of the process as well if anyone is interested.

Been looking into this again.. As I need a rack for a ladder or two. I own a sign company, i also have 2 car seats in back during school year, so a rack is needed. what kinda of options ? do the bars come with the parts that grip onto them to make the rack or is that sorta something that comes with another part. like how do they attached to the rails.

Thanks BJ1, I bought a hotknife at Harbor Freight ($21) and followed your instructions. I have a white Murano and had one small hot black plastic melt a tiny spot in the paint, on the roof near the area. Caution, be very careful with this, you should tape down cloth on paint on roof around each area to protect it and make cleanup easier. Also, I bought factory crossbars from the dealer ($315) and the melted cut out was tight with the crossbars, so be prepared to shave plastic out of the opening so it fits. I carefully did this with a sharp utility knife.
This saved me $175 and took 1.25 hrs (took my time ;) )

What a hassle, My 2017 'S' didn't come with factory roof rails, so I put Yakima racks on, a $700 parts project but looks good, solid, and I can remove them after the season ... I added kayak 'J' holders and we drove the Murano with the kayaks to Oregon and back to Fresno with no problems. Thule didn't specify any fitments for the 3rd gen Mo.

That's an 18' canoe on top of a 14' Jetta in the background.
