Forward Collision Warning fails

This device is really sensitive. Whenever I'm driving in rain/sleet around freezing it seems, and sometimes even rain when it's cold, this device shuts off and the cruise control doesn't work either. I wish there was something that could be done about it but I'm doubtful. Some cars have the sensor mounted behind the windshield above the rearview mirror, so it's not affected by the elements.

Yup. Had a lot of situations like that in heavy snow, and rain.

I think that overall it's pretty good, and reasonable in those situations - but annoying that you cannot use cruise - however I think of the other side, and that is it needs to be disabled as it's having trouble making the determinations that we need it to make regarding braking and cruise!

I think it's mounted low because it has a feature in which it bounces the radar signal beneath the car in front of you to detect if the car in front of that car is slowing down rapidly.

But yes, I would have preferred it mounted higher as mine shuts down even at the slightest sight of wet snow.

I have the 2017.5 model and I’ve experienced the same issue in snow/heavy rain. I don’t see this as a “problem”, but rather the nature of the technology during inclement weather. I would not want to engage cruise control in bad weather - even if I could.

On my 15 the radar/sensor is mounted on the bottom of the grille (lower part of the bumper), where snow, dirt, etc can easily form. Its kind of sad, I think, since this technology was on my 05 Infiniti Fx35, with the same mounting point and all. You've to think Nissan would improve this after all these years.

In the note, if this is an issue or not, for me it is. When I experienced this, my cruise control is not on. It just told me that this functionality is disabled and gave me the annoying yellow/amber sign on the dash. I dont like my dash to look like a christmas tree with all those lights on ...

I have a new 2018 Murano SV with the premium package and FCW and AEB. How do I know if the system is working? I apparently have not been in a situation to notice if it is working but thought a couple of times it should have given me a warning. Does it only work with cruise control enabled?

Getting a bad feeling about this Front Radar/ICC issue.

I live in NC. No slow, no slush, and I've only driven the car (just turned 3 months old) in the rain on a handful of occasions. Actually never had any problems during the rain.

But then about 10 days ago I started getting the "Unavailable Front Radar Obstruction" message. Just street driving and the error always occurred when making a left turn. After seeing the posts on this forum, I thought there might be some debris on the front sensor. So yesterday I had the car washed and also did a check myself with a damp paper towel (just to make sure).

Today when driving on the highway, the message kicked in again (BTW, sunny and dry all around) and shut down the ICC. This problem has been described in the forum, but I add my experience as I do not believe the weather has played any part in the problem. I saw another thread which indicated that it might be a calibration issue. I hope that's all it is. I'll be taking the car in for service and will post again when I know more.

I have a 18 SL Midnight Edition and it gave the same "Forward Collision Warning Failure" the other day. I only have 3200 miles on the vehicle and is only driven a few miles a week due to office in the home. When the warning happened I was driving around 74mph, sunny day and around 84deg. I panicked for the Cruise shut off and the dash warning lights activated. I drove the vehicle home and let it set a few hours, afterwards I cranked it and the warning was still there. I inspected the sensor in the front, lower grill and everything looked clear. I let the Mo sit overnight, cranked it the next morning and the warning vanished and all is normal. This whole "Forward Collision Failure"scenario has taken place twice. I took pics and plan to visit the dealership for inspection. Weird.....

UPDATE:::

The dealership suppose to have fixed the Forward Collision Warning failure back in May. A few weeks ago, the malfunction "Unavailable Front Radar Obstruction" started popping up again and is much worse. I cannot drive the vehicle at all without the malfunction. I have placed a call to the dealership once again. I will know more Thursday, once they get a chance to pull the codes, blah blah blah........ So frustrating.

If it happens after a certain mileage every time you drive it, the whole system needs to be replaced. Mine started doing it 7 miles after start up religiously EVERY SINGLE TIME I drove it. Dealer recalibrated and reset a bunch of times and ended up replacing the radar module because it wouldn't stop doing it. Then I returned it via lemon law because it was never the same after that. A lot of false positives, etc.

Dealer/warranty problem, so take it in again and again if needed. Establish a paper trail to prove it happened while in warranty.

That's about the only approach you can take.

UPDATE#2::

The dealership did the inspection and viewed my photos/documentation, which shows the frequency of the malfunction. Dealer contacted Nissan Motor Company and was told to replace the whole radar unit and wiring. The kicker is,,the parts and unit are all on back order and no date as to when available. "Don't call us, we will call you." ( which I understand that is all they can do at this point) The Service MGR said he has seen a few of these issues and seems to be a growing concern for Nissan. Regardless, I will wait for the dealership to call, preform the replacement and hope for the best. Yay!!

This is a solid outcome! Not that unusual to have to wait a bit for parts; this is a non-critical assembly and you'll be fine in the interim.

Hope this fixes it for you.

Thank you. Yeah, I am sure it will be fine. I know the dealership's hands are tied and doing the best they can. They have been super nice and supportive and really seem concerned about making things right. The only reason I have posted my situation is hoping it might help someone else who might might be experiencing the same thing and might have questions. I love my 18 Murano SL Midnight Ed.

[My previous reply didn't seem to make it, so trying again]

Update to my 5-26 post: Earlier this week they replaced my front sensor and bracket. It took 4 weeks to get the parts. I found a service bulletin online from 2016 that notes this issue, so Nissan has had 2 MY to get it resolved. Oh well. But kudos to the dealer/service dept. They stayed on top of things and got me an appointment once they knew the part was shipped.

I have the same issue with my pre-owned 2018 Murano SV & dealer says the sensors need to be aligned & I have to pay $350 for the service as the alignment warranty only applies to 1 year or 12,000 miles & my car has 13,000 on it currently.

I am not buying that explanation & checking with Nissan on this.

Do you guys have any idea if sensor alignment has a different term of warranty as suggested by the dealer?

I don't think I would accept that either. Where did you buy it from. I would think that would fall under the 3/36K.

Part came in. Sitting at the dealership now waiting on my 2018 Murano Midnight Edition (5 hours so far). Hope this sensor works and I have no more problems. I have seen online that this has been an issue ever since Nissan started putting these sensors on all of their models. Looks like they could have the problem solved before now. I just hope this new sensor doesn’t start shutting off again in a few months like the first one.

2018 is Murano with 4,385 miles. Car was purchased in February 2018. Started having the same problem around 3, 000 miles. Dealer has been notified. Having it checked out tomorrow along with my first oil change. When notified of the problem with the radar sensor the service writer seemed to be familiar with the problem. Expecting to hear the same story about back order. Will update later

I was able to drive about 70 miles this past weekend. So far the new, replacement sensor is working as it is designed. I now have about 4600 miles on the clock. I think the next few thousand miles will tell the tell if this is corrected or if it will happen again. My first experience with the failure wasn't until a few thousand miles originally.
