Gen III - USB Music?

OK, I just loaded up a USB flash drive with about 20 GB of music. When I plugged it into the USB port in my Murano, it said it detected a new USB device, and asked if I wanted to make a new voice profile, or something, for it. I think I said yes... It then said "Reading USB device..." After a couple of minutes it said, "Check USB Device."

So it seems like it won't read it, or play music from a USB drive?

This was my first attempt at doing this. Just wondering if anyone else has played music right from a USB flash drive? I assumed it would work, but maybe it doesn't? Anyway, let me know your experiences doing this.

In the meantime, I'm going to reformat the drive, and put just a few albums on it to see if that makes a difference. It's a 64GB flash drive (USB3). Maybe I'll try a couple of USB flash drives, and see if a different one works.

Thanks for any help! :)

So I wanted a lower profile flash drive than the one suitcasejohnny posted, decided to grab the 32GB version of this one for $12: [ame]http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LLER2CS[/ame]

It arrived pre-formatted FAT32, so I just copied my music over and it plays fine on the Murano.

Be warned it is quite difficult to pull out of the provided protective case once snapped in...

Great success! Wow it all came up immediately. A couple of things that i learned here:

-Stay away from PNY. I initially bought a 128GB and none of my computers or the Murano even recognized it. If you do a google search you will see the issue is widespread for PNY. Go with SANDISK

-I used guiformat to format the drive FAT32

-If you have an ipod, there is a hidden folder under Music that contains several subfolders (mine had 50 folders) copy these subfolders to the USB. Dont worry about the names of the songs they will show properly when opened with the Music Player. There is a link here to copy music from ipod to computer.

Ok here's a question. This might be too specific but what the hell I'll give it a shot. I followed suitcasejohnny's instructions and even used his link to buy that nice little drive from Amazon and it worked like a charm. The only hitch I'm experiencing is that during playback, I get a very short, one second at the most, gap between songs. Normally this isn't even noticeable but one of my favorite albums, David Gilmour Live at Gdansk, has no gaps in the songs as being live, the songs flow right from one into another. This makes that gap somewhat disruptive when listening. I'm brining songs out of iTunes as recommended by suitcasejohnny. I've looked around in iTunes and the only place I've ever seen a setting for gaps between songs is in the window that comes up when burning to a CD.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey man, I've noticed the same thing on certain albums where the songs run together, Like the Beatles Abbey Road. I don't know if this is something that can be fixed in iTunes, or not. I've got the same files playing on other systems with no gap between songs, so that makes me think it's a "problem" with the music player in the Murano. It must be programmed to add a slight gap between tunes. It's a little bit of a bummer, and somewhat annoying, but I can live with it. Don't have much choice really. ;)

Glad all the other directions worked for you!

At some point I'm going to play around with some different ways to save to the drive and see if I can stumble upon something that works. It's not a terrible thing but like you said, slightly annoying.

256 GB USB 3 works like a charm

I can confirm that 256 GB, USB 3 works perfectly.
I bought a Patriot 256GB Supersonic XT, part # PEF256GSBUSB, from here:

To my surprise, it came already formated as FAT32, I didn't have to do anything other than add music files to it. Plugged it in and worked immediately. The size is medium for a usb stick, small enough to not interfere with anything.

What can I say, I am very happy I could fit all my music. I play it random in all folders and always starts where I left it when the car got turned off.

I converted all my files to mp3 320. Tried Flac but doesn't work.

The only thing I noticed, nothing to do with the usb drive, most probably Murano's computer doesn't recognize more than 256 Folders. I used to have the structure as Artist/Album/Songs. I had to change that to Artist/Songs to reduce the number of folders and it's fine now. I wouldn't mind if everything would just be in the root folder.
It doesn't matter to me since I play them randomly anyway.

Flash Drives...

Bought a PNY 16 gig 2.0 FAT32 formatted Micro Metal Attache flash drive after I had filled up a Verbatin 16 gig Nano micro drive. Hadn't tried it yet in my Mo until I read joesatch's comment. Loaded it with an audio book and a favorite album selection and headed for the garage to give it a test. Worked fine.

These micro drives are great in that they are only the size of a headache tablet and don't stick out into the storage box to get in the way of anything put in there.

I'm having issues navigating the usb 1 folder menu. When the car is stopped, I can scroll through the list and then tap on my selection. As soon as the car starts moving I can't swipe the screen anymore which from a safety point I can understand. Oddly enough when moving the arrows on the far left still work which is far more distracting than just swiping the list on the screen. In my Maxima I could select individual albums from the steering wheel controls. In my Murano I can toggle through songs using the up/down toggle on the steering wheel but I can't find a way to select an album/ folder. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Wife is out with my 2015 right now, so I can't confirm, but the 2012 Mo I had before you had to long press the steering wheel up/down button to make it goto the next or previous folder...Quick press for next/last song...was slow but did help at times...I would expect the new 2015 at least does the same

My biggest complaint with the USB music is the shuffle algorithm. There are certain songs it seems to want to play every third or fourth song. It's annoying enough I'm about ready to give up on it.

On occasion, my Murano will stop reading the USB and lock up the radio. I have tried multiple drives and that doesn't seem to fix the issue. I can recreate a similar status by trying to change tracks while the car is in its startup process. Unplugging the USB drive will free up the radio, but plugging the USB drive in won't allow it to work again. So far only turning the car off and restarting seems to work. Anyone else have this happen?

Thanks for the ideas. I tried them briefly this morning on the way to work before my wife started to lecture me about playing with the car while I'm driving. The tuning knob worked well for changing folders. When I tried the steering wheel toggle, a quick up or down changes tracks accordingly. When I tried a longer toggle, it didn't change folders but it fast forwarded or reversed within the song that was playing.

I tried it with the folder list displayed as well as the "now playing" screen. I could see the counter advance as I did the long toggle and the current song fast forwarded. I'll try it with the map displayed to see if that makes any difference in the morning.

Tried it this morning with the maps display up and same thing. As soon as I do the long toggle, the bar at the top of the map that shows the song info and the timer, speeds forward as I toggle and just fast forwards the song.

I am having this Issue with my IPod all the sudden. The IPod is a 160 GB but holding about 24 GB on the IPod total in music and anything else they throw on there.

The Ipod Menu (On the Murano Info Screen) pulls up and it has all the songs it's just not playing them now. This has happened to me 3x but the 2 prior it would start playing after awhile.

I wonder if it's just slowly loading those songs somehow. Not sure how the System works if it downloads from my IPod or reads it?

I assume in essence an IPod is a USB drive. So the issues you are having with too big of a Flash drive makes me wonder if that is what is going on now with mine. I bet since I have bought the Murano I have added 100 songs to my IPod. Right now there is about 1700 on there. Some are imported from an External HD so lord knows what types and sizes each song is. HMMMMM
