My parking brake is barely holding. My drive is on a slight incline. When I engage my parking brake the Murano will still roll back until the transmission holds it. I have changed the brakes thinking that would help, it didnt. I can see the parking brake cable and it seems quite loose. I cant figure out how to tighten it. Please help! Thanks for your time!

The parking brake is independent from the regular braking system. It is actually a set of drum brakes embedded in the rear hubs. The adjustment is at the rear hubs.

The service manual shows an "adjusting nut" at the forward end of the brake cable where it meets the foot pedal, but there are no references indicating that it is to be used to tighten the cable.

So, should I follow these steps? Seems a little confusing. I mean, does this tighten the cable or not?

I rarely use the parking brake so I never had a need to tighten the cable. I only reported the information that was contained in the service manual. Hopefully another member will chime in and explain first-hand how he adjusted the cable.

Mine was really loose from the beginning. My solution was to have the dealer take care of it under warranty when I had it in for other things.

Surprisingly, this is one thing that the incompetent service team DID manage to do properly.

However, I'm finding now 2 years later that it seems to be loose again. Not as bad as it was, but certainly looser than it was after they fixed it. Not sure why this would be the case...

I thought we had a few nissan techs here...
Obviously none of them have had a loose brake cable. ;)

I just took a look at my MO and there is no adjustment for the brake cable at the foot pedal nor under the MO. It looks the the only way to adjust it is at the rear wheel hub as outlined in the second post of this thread.

I guess I should not be surprised since the MO is designed for ease of manufacturing and not ease of maintenence.

Thanks for looking. I had a peek too and couldnt really tell what I was looking at. GO NISSAN...lol. I love the MO THO. Ill take him in... :(

Actually there is an adjustment nut at the end of the cable where it attaches to the parking brake pedal.

I did my own and I followed the instructions as njjoe has posted and it went well.

You do have to first loosen the nut(at the foot pedal as it states) to allow some slack.

Hoist up the rear tires and remove them. Pop off the rubber cover as they show; shine a flashlight in there and you will see the "star" adjusting nut that needs to be turned.

Just remember to count how many times you turn over the "star" nut and do about the same for the other side.

Then finish off at the parking brake pedal adjusting the nut there so that you have the amount of "clicks" they spec on the instruction.

It will take you about 1 hour depending on how mechanically inclined you are and if you have a floor jack.

My 2005 does not have an adjusting nut at the forward end of the cable. I looked this afternoon and the end of the cable housing is connected with a non-adjustable clip.

Hmm; that's odd. I wonder where the adjuster nut is? Do you have the '05 "exploded" view of the P-brake cable system? The one I posted is of the '03. The adjusting nut is part # 8.

06 Murano parking brake adjustment -tighten (inside car)

There is a parking brake adjustment inside the car on the linkage above the pedal. You must twist your neck to see it when pedal is depressed, just under the bottom of the dash. Its a 10mm NUT on the adjuster bolt. Its easier done with an open-end wrench (or adjustable wrench) vs. socket, since if its been previously tightened or the cable has stretched the nut turns farther onto the bolt -upward. The owner manual and the Haynes Repair Manual are vague on their diagram. I couldn't find a youtube video for this adjustment (only the adjustment for shoes/pads on wheels). I have a 2006.
