Sun Visor Problem

I have a '04 Murano SL with 37K. The 3x36 warranty was up in April of '07. In Sept. of '06 I had to have the Sun Visors replaced because they would not stay up in place. Particularly the driver side. Under the warranty the dealer replaced both sun visors. About two months ago the passenger side sun visor has started to do the same thing and will not stay up in place. Now that I'm out of the 3x36 warranty (even though I do have the Nissan Extended Warranty) the dealer wants about 300.00 for the replacement of one sun visor. I have seen in one case in this forum were a owner has had this same problem and was out of the 3x36 warranty and there dealer took care of them. Is there any other owners out there that this has been taken care of outside of warranty. Really this can be looked at as a safety issue. Any additional advice would be appreciated. From everything I can gather there is no fixing these sun visors its replacement only in order to fix this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Just to remind you (again, please don't be offended), you DID buy a 4 1/2 year old car with almost 40K miles already on it and a number of problems since the day you got it. God-only-knows (figuratively speaking, of course) how that poor car was treated by its original owner(s). Many Mo owners haven't experienced any of the problems you are seeing.

That said, the floppy visor issue has been reported by several other members of this forum and certainly should be a non-issue on ANY car regardless of age or mileage - high end or not. Still, I'd be more concerned about the driveability problems and poor fuel mileage you have reported than something simple like a floppy visor (though I admit that would be annoying).

I performed the surgery described a few pages back. I opened the visor and found that I couldn't just slip a bolt in as described, due to wiring and I simply wasn't convinced it was a long-term fix. Maybe the person who did that can tell us if it is still working.

As you can see in the pictures the problem, to me, appears to be the little tab gets worn down. I tried tightening the metal sleeve where it contacts the tab and it still fell occaisionally, was a little better, but I think over time it would just go back to falling everytime.

So I opted to instead switch the driver's side with the passenger's side mirrors. We lost use of our vanity mirrors and it may look a little funny, but I just couldn't see shelling out the cash for a new visor. I'm hoping the tab is in better shape in the passenger side since it wouldn't have been used as much.

Here are the pictures of the inside so you don't have to open yours!

I am the one that did the fix with the bolt and it its still holding up. In your second picture#32 your finger looks like it is right above where the hole was on mine if you would have removed a little more of the foam. If I recall it is just thin sheet metal wrapped around that the worn off tab should have caught on. If yours does not have a hole you could drill one about where your finger is and put a small bolt in to thighten if reversing them turns out not to work. Good Luck!

Thanks Paul. I'm glad to hear your fix is still holding! I did cut that back to the hole you describe. I was concerned I may damage the wiring if I passed the bolt in the same tube that contains the wires. I guess even if I were to damage the wires I would only lose the courtesy lights on the mirror. I may have another look in the near future, I only have duct tape doubled over holding the seam closed for now. I'm still looking for a decal to fit there.

Couldn't you just use a metal hose crimp/clamp and compress it just enough on that tabbed area (without having to cut everything open) to force friction so the tab will catch and hold? Paint it black or gray (or whatever to match your visor) and you're good to go.

Cost = $0.09

One of those heavy-duty "chip clips" might even do the trick.

A paper binder clip might even work. Clamp it and pull off the silver arms.

Cost = $0.15

Keep the problem report going - my 2007 Murano now has the same problem on driver side sun visor. I really start to believe this might be some problem at Nissan product quality, not just simply a batch of bad part....

If this is the kind of support we can expect from Nissan when it is so many people are having this problem, than I will think twice before I invest in another Nissan.

I will be writing a letter to their corporate office.

I did a search on eBay and found a bunch of Murano visors sold in pairs for a bit over $100-200...but there's no way of ensuring that they're going to be any better than the ones they're replacing....unless they come off a newer car, but you have to make sure the screw holes line up for the different year models. You might also go down to a dealership and see if the visors off the Altima or other models fits and check eBay or a recycler. If you have a vehicle recycle row near you, you can check them out....here in Sacramento, we have a huge recycle center for all makes of cars....great place to go for parts like these.

04 Murano

I have a Morano (04) and replaced the drivers visor about 2 months ago $400 and now the other one is down. Now that I see all the problems others are having I don't want to buy another one. This is just a bad product. I'm on my 4th Nissan because I feel they have great quality. I'm going to contact the home office to try to get this fixed. Maybe the quality is not what it once was. I hope this is not my last Nissan.

I am so disgusted with Nissan. I have started a Facebook Page. Please head over and "like" us and share your stories.

Nissan isn't going to change a darn thing if we just complain on the Nissan site. They know nobody else is looking here. Perhaps if we widen the scope of people who see this issue they will do something to fix it. Feel free to head over and "Like" the page and also to leave your thoughts, stories, etc. The people that see the info and the more that people see about it will at least let more people know that there is a problem, it has been known about for several years, and not only will Nissan not fix it, but expects the consumers to spend a ridiculous amount of money (sometimes repeatedly) to replace a part that fails due to their design flaw.

Thanks for any support!

Hey everyone I figured it out. The way I was trying to take it down before I would have done some damage to the headliner and the clip holding it. No tool is necessary to get the plastic piece to come off. Just sit in the seat take your thumb (right handed) and brace the triangle clip portion facing you then 2 fingers on the same hand on the other end of the triangle that is closest to the windshield and pry it off. It rests on a metal triangle of the visor that is held in by 2 screws. Once you take off the plastic piece take a Phillips screw driver remove the 2 screws and secure them. Then take black tape and wrap the connection. Then take the connection (wiring of the car for the vanity light) and place the clip in a way that it hooks onto the metal opening of where the visor is installed.
