Synthetic Oil

I know the topic of engine oil has been discussed several different ways, but i just found out quite by accident that Nissan has changed the brand and type of oil used in the 2021 MO. I took my Mo in for the first oil change to the dealer and when i got the car back and looking at the service order there is a statement on it that they are using mobile 1 0-20 Super synthetic oil. So asked the service advisor why the change in oil. I had been using Pennzoil select in my 2015. I was told that this mobile oil is the only one authorized in the new cars. Now the way i feel about it is I have a contract with them on oil changes and tire rotations so if they use the mobile so be it. I looked in the manual it does not say that the mobile is the only one to use.
Figured put this out here and see if anyone has run into this yet. Or is this a dealer option.

I'd rather run Mobil 1 than the Pennzoil, but regardless, the oil determination is made by the specs in the manual, not by brand name. Any oil meeting the API service specs is suitable.

As long as the dealer is using oil which meets the API specs, IMO there is no reason to complain.

I have used nothing but synthetic oils since 1977. In that entire time I have had only one (1) internally lubricated engine part fail. That's a lot of cars without problems. In a turbo car, it's crazy to run anything except synthetic, and most modern cars require synthetic oil to maintain the warranty.

There is plenty of info on synthetic oils available online - no need to review it all here. It makes interesting reading.

Looked at the paperwork for my 2018 Rogue which was using the same oil as the Murano and they both either show Genuine Nissan 0-20w synthetic or Mobil. Probably depends on the service Dept and what they keep for bulk use. Also…the little folder my service Dept puts each service record in shows Nissan and Mobil oils on it (although that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s all they use). I wouldn‘t put too much thought into it as long as they are using oil approved by Nissan and matching the requirements in the manual.

I'd rather run Pennzoil full syn than Mobil 1 but they're both fine, as is any modern synthetic oil that meets the API specs. (I had significantly more oil consumption with Mobil 1 in an old Subaru than with other brand oils...but that may be my own old wives' tale based on a place and time) Any full syn in the factory recommended weight should be great. There is a really fine line between full syn and syn blends these days and I'd really have no issues with a good syn blend either. (A LOT of Ford vehicles have used Motorcraft syn blend under really tough conditions including Ecoboost turbo engines.)

As for your dealer saying that Mobil Super full syn is "required" by Nissan, that line is BS. Super slots in below Mobil 1 and is "only" good for 7500 miles instead of 15000. I do judge service people that lie to me.
