The Window Rattle

Okay, I've dealt with this problem ever since I took ownership. I figured it might go away as the vehicle 'settled' and all the materials weathered, but noooo...

My driver and passenger windows (and very rarely the rear pass/driver) rattle. Or, more accurately, something is rattling against them and it resonates across the entire window surface. This sounds like a tapping or a creaking (but with a more rapid report, like a *tap!*) and happens in two situations:

Driver's side will tap when hitting a bump on the passenger side. Usually these are creases between sections of paved road. Sudden, quick, snappy bumps.

Passenger side will tap when hitting a similar bump on the driver side.

Both sides will tap if whatever causes the bump hits both sides of the car.

Also, occasionally tapping when the vehicle's weight shifts, like going around curves.

These only happen when the windows are fully up. These also happen MUCH more frequently if it is cold outside, often to the point where -any- bump will result in tap-tap-tap.

Given the topics on "the other Murano forum", people have had a variety of solutions for this. A variety of problems, I imagine. One dude took his door apart and tweaked something where the window rests. Frankly, I don't know what to do.

My MO is going in for 7500 service soon, and I will mention it to the techs. Again. The first time, they heard it on my initial drive, but then couldn't reproduce it (that old line) on subsequent test drives. They must've driven it around their nicely paved, smooth parking lot, because on any normal road, it'll do it. Often.

Mrf. :/

Or if it's a charcoal interior a little bit of graphite. Where's that pencil my daughter was walking around with...

While out driving today I noticed that when the back seat window(s) are completely down the back bench vibrates very loudly. It is so loud that the sounds from the radio are completely washed out. After some checks with different combinations of window openings I determined that it occurs only when either or both back windows are completely down (front widows are up) and driving faster than 30 mph. Has any one else had this problem and is Nissan aware of it? I am taking my MO into the dealer this week to get the alignment checked, still under warrenty, and wanted to bring this to their attention.

More and more I try to target these issue I get mad.

I don't think it's just metal to plasticy touch.

It just is cheap plastic used in this car.

There are creaks, ticks all over when warming up from 20 some degrees to normal comfort climate.
Especially when the plastic where the fan comes out is cold and as the engine warms up the air is blowing warm-hot air.

My other 10 year old car is better as far as the plastics used in there.

I have a 04 Murano which had the tick noise in both front doors. I brought it to the dealer (STAR Nissan in Queens NY...really great service center) armed with the many 'fixes' suggested here. They told me they had a service bulletin on this problem..NTB03-109...It is now soooo quiet. It has been three weeks and it is still quiet. The fix is to insulate the door panels. So far it is great.

tick

This reminds me I need to make an appointment to get this fixed. I have definitely isolated it to the front door panels. If I push on any part of the panel just below the window, it makes the tick noise that drives me CRAZY. I hope my dealer is as proficient at resolving this.

I can't seem to find that TSB on the nissanhelp or infinitihelp sites. Am I being stupid and missing the obvious? I'd love to print that out and bring it to my dealer.

Thanks, I'd seen 03-090, but can't seem to get the full text of the 03-105 or 03-109 TSBs to print out and bring with me. On the infinithelp site the text for 03-105 is not available (the "view document" link is grayed out for that one) and 03-109 is not listed. :(

Tick has returned . . .

Well, I was hoping you guys would be wrong, but the ones that said that lube was a temporary fix were right. My front passenger door tick is back. It occurs over bumps and is slowly getting worse again. This time, I think I will take off the door panel, remove the lube and add some foam strips with adhesive on one side at strategic points. This will be my last DIY fix before going back to the dealer and hassling with no car, back ordered parts, and all the other excuses that usually come with these problems - that's assuming they will even acknowledge the problem exists!

From what has been posted in this thread I've concluded that the the best approach to resolving the door tics is to completely remove the inner doorskin and cover (drape) the entire door with synthetic felt before replacing the doorskin over the felt layer.
Placing foam at only certain points will only alter the way the door sits and probably cause a different tic in another location. When the weather warms I'll be doing this.
In the A pillar rattle thread I posted a fix using felt and it worked and continues to work perfectly. Felt is king.:4:

I used to have felt just at the top of both front doors. Kinda like the business card trick. It still works on the passenger door. The driver door was, of course, worse. I took it to the dealer last year. Heres a picture of their fix. It actually worked pretty good until recently. I guess the material has compressed too much.

Tonight I used a credit card to wedge in a strip of felt. You can see it peeking out the edge of the panel. The squeak is finally gone!

FINALLY!! I now have the passenger side door panel in and so far so good. Normally every morning I hear the door rattling and since i had it installed yesterday it has quit. Cross your fingers for me!! Now all i have to do is verify if that squeaking in the back is from my spare.

The server crash has affected my recent photo posts. Please visit my Gallery and see "Dealer Fix for Squeak" and "Door Felt." They're currently at the top of the gallery.

Thanks! :)

Dealer refused to apply above TSB to my 04. They did add a little felt tape to the door panel. Noise is a worse now.
Did they apply the felt under the edge of the panel like in my picture? What I found, in my case, was the edge of the panel was rubbing against the door, making the dreaded squeak. Also, how I put the felt in place made a difference. I put the piece in doubled over. I'm pretty sure I remember just having it one layer thick and the panel could still move enough that it made a rubbing noise (this time caused by the felt instead of the panel edge). Also , I've wondered about cutting a piece of rubber tubing length-wise to place along the panel edge. That might make for enough friction to stop the movement, or it will give us a whole new noise.

I forgot to mention that a few weeks earlier, I placed a piece of foam next to one of the panel clip points. I always thought it was the problem, but it didn't make a difference. I "borrowed" a pic from Kris' earlier post and added a Yellow box where I placed the foam (on the driver door). His Post shows all the foam he added.
